14 We stared each and other at a linear spread, laid out for tomorrow. It was something new we could reproduce later when we needed to remember. The fierce hope melted before us: The sun’s balding-orange head became one with the hill’s pale blue bedding. Lies down, the tip of orange-slice, a sliver a hair. then a glow leaving flaming, blood-melon peach-melba push-up-popsickle sky periwinkle dotted with an occasional pig chasing mice streaking mad, then milk spilling. That color fades now is gone save a single star twirling taut-stringed. Gone behind shivering lights of towns. It hides until tomorrow's thaw. — Heidi Borrink
