The Annointing And in the middle of soup formalities just after the awkward exchange of hors doeuvres and talk of theology, the painted brass cat stood there swaying loosely in the doorway, her lips pouting bloody drops of ruby, eyes swollen and swirling a sea of aqua and emerald lined into slits. Hot, spicy air mingled in the stifled gasps as Pharisees dabbed their open mouths with four-cornered linen and spoons stopped stirring. They watched the gaudy gorgon move her way solemnly through tables, coarse hands cupped close to her holding an alabaster vile. Her eyes spilled over black and blue streams as she drew nearer and nearer to Jesus who held her with a steady flicker in his gaze. Falling to the stone she broke, the tender jar a costly reasing of precious perfume, her stain. Fresh flowed her heart's flood at his feet, bathed in oil and tears, caressed and sponged with her mane. Kissing tenderly his feet, this cleansing... left her sweet opalescent white. — Heidi Borrink
