Text from Pages 1 - 352 of the 1986 volume:

“ToweR 96C6 I urge you, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God, which is your spiritual worship. Romans 12:1 The Graduates Student Life Organizations Sports Underclassmen Grad School Shoot Your Group Senior Tribute The Annointing And in the middle of soup formalities just after the awkward exchange of hors doeuvres and talk of theology, the painted brass cat stood there swaying loosely in the doorway, her lips pouting bloody drops of ruby, eyes swollen and swirling a sea of aqua and emerald lined into slits. Hot, spicy air mingled in the stifled gasps as Pharisees dabbed their open mouths with four-cornered linen and spoons stopped stirring. They watched the gaudy gorgon move her way solemnly through tables, coarse hands cupped close to her holding an alabaster vile. Her eyes spilled over black and blue streams as she drew nearer and nearer to Jesus who held her with a steady flicker in his gaze. Falling to the stone she broke, the tender jar a costly reasing of precious perfume, her stain. Fresh flowed her heart's flood at his feet, bathed in oil and tears, caressed and sponged with her mane. Kissing tenderly his feet, this cleansing... left her sweet opalescent white. — Heidi Borrink abeels “jasinabaiit a ssall cree WHEATON ELEV.75173 FI. ne nee A A RR I A a 10 The Sun Catching only a diamond of leaves has burnt them orange they are falling from vio- let pea sky —— LAST Swanson Ml 13 14 We stared each and other at a linear spread, laid out for tomorrow. It was something new we could reproduce later when we needed to remember. The fierce hope melted before us: The sun’s balding-orange head became one with the hill’s pale blue bedding. Lies down, the tip of orange-slice, a sliver a hair. then a glow leaving flaming, blood-melon peach-melba push-up-popsickle sky periwinkle dotted with an occasional pig chasing mice streaking mad, then milk spilling. That color fades now is gone save a single star twirling taut-stringed. Gone behind shivering lights of towns. It hides until tomorrow's thaw. — Heidi Borrink 15 DR HERBERT JACOBSEN HIGNELL . 4 DR DEREK C€ 16 Nedication It takes certain qualities for an individual to gain respect of others. These include integrity, honesty, the willingness to listen, to befriend, and to share openly, especially with students. It is demanding for a professor to fulfill his teaching duties, be a good family man and encompass all these qualities. Dr Derek Chignell and Dr Herbert Jacobsen have demonstrated their willingness to share themselves: their struggles and victories in their Christian lives with their students. It is to these two respected men, respectively the chair of the Chemistry and the Bible Department, that the TOWER 6 is dedicated. Dr Chignell and Dr J, thank you for being honest and open with us, we are proud to know you both. 18 (ministration euntercneha ek mone peg pee Tey Repersess ENT FF geese sees 19 ee AINE | 20 v {NHUUGHURRRARBNE | -21 23 RT DR JOHN WALFORD, Chair JANET DEVRIES KAREN FORSBERG STEVEN HAMMAN BARI JOHNSON MARGARET LOWN ALISA MUELLER DARLEEN PEGG KATHERINE RONKA CARALYN WINDES JOHN CALDWELL JOEL SHEESLEY ALVA STEFFLER DR. This year nine students and three faculty took part in one of the most extraordinary experiences of their lives. Even with classes by Wheaton faculty, performance instruction by Festival faculty, and frequent nightly concerts, we found time to enjoy the breathtaking scenery of the Rockies on hiking and camping trips into the surrounding mountains - a thrill for those of us whose concept of “heights” was characterized by the upper deck at Coniskey | Park! All in all, Aspen was a special time of spiritual growth for all of us as well as a once- in-a-lifetime opportunity to learn the finer | points of hot tub etiquette. — Yvonne Koyzis Po 31 CONSERVATORY DR. Actually it was three wonderful weeks in Europe — one week in Holland and two in England — to analyze and compare the various broadcast systems. Each day of the program proved to be a real learning experience for the ten students. We were given lectures by prominent British and Dutch producers; toured places such as the world renowned BBC and Coventry Cathedral; and were even given a surprise lecture by Brother Andrew. We were required to keep a journal of what we learned, and watch as much TV as possible. (Can you imagine watching Magnu m P.I. dubbed in German? Tom Selleck didn’t seem so attractive speaking German.) | left Europe with a lot of happy memories and a greater understanding of broadcasting. You cannot be a leader without being a servant — the two things are inseparable. We contemplated the possible course of our desti- nies: “What do you want to do with your life? | WANNA KEY!” We wrestled not with deep questions of theology, but rather with the life- impacting “Is it in the herbarium?” But alas, the question was moot. We logged many miles in the van, to the Badlands and best of all to Yellowstone. We stalked drooling bison, prairie dogs, and the plaid-billed yang bird. We survived the hard work and always managed to fit in after-dinner volleyball. There were also adventure packed sidetrips into Rapid City. But what can compare to those glorious nights sleeping under the stars, steam-rollering ourbuddies? Yet what we learned from cyanide jars and twenty pound textbooks was nothing compared to what we learned from Paul Frederick’s sobering accident. Through that God’s power left an in- delible mark on each of our lives. The Black Hills: the work, the stillness, the evidence and awe of God’s work — all blend into a rich memory for our Summer of 1985. Ch aplain Vic reminded us during the senior chapel that we were about to enter into a ‘terrible, horrible, no-good, very bad world.’ Well, the world out there is going to get us, good or bad; the ‘86 graduates are ready to face that world, we have been sheltered long enough, and we know that. We have all done a lot of growing these four years, made a lot of friends and we are leaving Wheaton with mixed feelings. It’s been good and bad, but we're ready to ‘lift the sails ’ as we were encouraged to do during our Freshmen Orientation. The hardest part about graduating, however, seems to be answering the ever present question, “What are you going to do now?” All | can say is “| DON’T KNOW!” Someday | will be able to return for my 25th reunion, and shock my former classmates with my many tales of travel and adventure; but right now it’s time to get used to being a freshman once again, and when tomorrow comes, I’m going to be there despite the rain. 93 94 Student Life 96 2 i = 97 : ETE SP as cee Se SG SS . m e NN VARA ANAC ANCAACAA, , WNAAA NON AA 100 101 i HOMECOMING OGIOBER 1 I-13 102 103 x =) 4 Te) i=) 4 PHIL KEAGGY SEPTEMBER 20 N NX a4 uy jaa) = uy = © ZA eT DEGARMO AND KEY BRUARY 7 : MITE HEART 109 110 Dr. Mary Hopper Beth Altobelli Elaine Balough Teresa Boyd Rosalyn Brandt Kelly Carpenter Renee Chavez Nadine Conner Tracy Daniels Ruth Darling Jenny Date Chris Davidson Bettina Delgado Inga DuMosch Mary Dyer Chery! It means giving a pair of shoes to aman who has none. It means hugging a filthy child who seems unlovable. It means sharing the Gospel with a teenager being pressured by the local gang. It means a desire to reach out at all levels — physical, emotional, and spiritual — and touch the lives of others. It was out of a desire for this type of ministry, and a burden for the many neglected and forgotten people within our country’s major urban araeas, that NCM began its first year of ministry. Eighteen students were chosen and placed in four cities — Los Angeles, Chicago, Minneapolis, and New York. Our experiences ranged from leading adult Bible studies to starting a summer grammer school. But even when we found ourselves facing different cultures, different lifestyles and different ideas, we shared a belief that God loves all people and can work through vessels even as inadequate as we. “He defended the cause of the poor and the needy, and so all went well with him. Is this not what it means to know Me?’ says the LORD.” Jeremiah 22:16 — Marilyn Cowan 143 144 j | 4 STUDENT MISSIONARY PROJECT None of us had any idea what was in store for us when we picked up those applications in MSC, but God knew, and prepared us for each step. Through a semester of orientation meetings, humbling requests for money, and encouraging small group Bible studies, God worked in each of us. With a little fear and a lot of excitement we scattered to a variety of locations to a diversity of jobs: street evangelism in Europe, construction in the jungles of New Guinea, teaching English in Asia and South America, preaching in the churches of Africa. God placed challenges in our way that only He could help us meet, showing us our inadequacies and His infinite power, and allowing us to rejoice in both. Any goals we had of service and ministry soon became second in priority as we realized that our motivation for being overseas was primarily to love God and glorify Him. Each of us can look back on our summers with fondness, because our SMP experiences didn’t end upon our return to the States. God touched us in a way that will affect us for the rest of our lives — we became a little more like His Son. — Lane McIntyre 145 146 Before leaving home to meet the rest of the team, | read a verse that Jesus addressed to Satan —’He was a murderer from the begin- ning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature; for he is a liar and the Father of lies.’ (john 8:44) This scripture took on special meaning as | saw Satan deceive people in order to rob them of life — both eternal and abundant. | didn’t meet a lot of German agnostics or French ex- istentialists — rather, the Canadian or Austra- lian travelers who heard about God, but who held an ugly, twisted image of Him in their minds. My privilege, certainly the most enjoy- able part of the summer, was to reflect Jesus through my person and work with these new friends to help them see a truthful, rather than distorted, concept of God. From there, | could pray and trust the Holy Spirit to continue His good work inside of them. Hard hearts don’t crumble with one blow; it’s better to chip away lovingly at the stone and hope that another Christian from another part of the world will be faithful to her task and continue the process. | am certainly not ashamed of our Lord, Jesus Christ — He is the life-giver, the one true God. — Saundra Stabler MUNISTRIES 147 oO a — 149 za QO} hs ZO FALL SEMESTER EGItOM . .wisseccdenasos 5 Ree eee Tom Neven Assistant EGItOr icneeee eee eee Dawn Olmsted News Editor“... .e ee ee Heather Conley Feature Editors...wissee meee David Frey Arts and Entertainment Editor Mary Hendrickson Sports: Edit0D..3.4.cR eee eee Jeff DiVall Layout EqitOrs.. eee ee oe Shelly Dettmer Gopy- Editor: Sa nee Michelle Edwards Photo Editors. eee ee Brian MacDonald CartoOOnist .2288 care eee ee eet Bruce Watkins Girculation Manager meen eee Ray Vance Advertising Manager ..........ccccccccccceeee Jon Andres Business Manageimes sweet... ae Todd James AdVISOr: Site ee ee Paul Fromer 150 SPRING SEMESTER EGLO (amet ee ne a aaa Dawn Olmstead VASSICAINC EGLO lpm rt aie nen ae David Frey INEWS ECIILOP eeene sce Michelle Edwards Assistant News Editor ............ The men’s team, led by standouts Todd Moxley and Chris Wilson, finished ranked 4th nationally in Division III. The team’s goal throughout the competition was to let Christ work through their actions and conduct in the hope that their faith would become evident to the opposition. Dealing with adversity, such as Moxley’s struggle with mononucleosis and Paul Frederick’s valiant recovery from a near fatal hiking accident, allowed the team to relate better to other teams which had experienced similar injuries. The team had high expectations and goals for the season, but, as Kathy Hofstra commented, “things didn’t turn out as well as we expected them to.” Although their 8-9 record was disappointing for them, the team felt they had more skill than in previous years. Coach Bert Kuechler concentrated on improving the individu al skills of the players, and the team’s game im- proved over the season. The coach also placed an emphasis on Christianity on the field. The main goal of the season, according to co-captain Cindy Green, “was to glorify God on the field.” This goal was the underlying force behind their unity as a team, and it did not go un- noticed by others. Several officials, coaches and players from opposing teams commemted on the team’s manners, as well as their ability. To the team, the season was a success. Co-captain Laurie Shute summed up this feeling when she said, “The team grew because of an underlying motivation to make their last year special, and it was.” PES it} ow: Coach Bert Kuechler, El Nagy, Debb James, Brookie Kramer, Sheila Roedel, Cindy Green. 2nd row: Karen Gorton, DeAnne Gens, Kelley Jean Bristol, Julie Eckstrom, Pam Kruse, Caryn Bell, Patty Hansler, Luise Wilkinson, Tori Plank. 3rd row: Colette Conner, Bey rice, Kathy Hofstra, Sunnie Kemp, Martha Holley, Laurie Shute, Kathy Ferguson. The 1985 season was specta- cular too, but in a different way, the players played as a team, without any superstars as in previous seasons. They did not win the Na- tional Championship this year, but as Mark McDonald put it, “our goal this season was to have fun playing with each other, becoming better than we were before, and playing for the glory of God.” The general consensus is that all these goals were fulfilled. With a winning streak of 39 games, the championship was in sight. At the beginning of the season the team played very well. They lost their intensity mid-season, but still won the games. However, when they entered the playoffs, they were at their peak. The most im- portant game of the season was the defeat of Northern Illinois University 2-0. This defeat of a Division | team gave confidence to the team, helping them to further success - winning the SOCCER Rochester Tournament in New York. Although they lost during the playoffs, perhaps their best game was against Washing ton. The strongest point for the team this season was their great team spirit and unity. They encouraged and pushed each other all the time. Their skill was perhaps not as great as it had been in previous years, but the Captains, Ed Meadors, Dave Wolf, and Tom Engstrom, and the coaching staff led by Coach Bean provided strong leadership throughout the season. Cam Roxburgh felt that this was “the highest group of guys I’ve ever experienced on a team.” Tri-captain Ed Meadors remembers his days on the Wheaton Soccer Team with affec- tion. “The 1985 Wheaton Soccer Team was a unit. We practiced and worked as a team, we won and lost as a team. Though we lost our final game, | will always remember my teammates as winners.” 177 178 WOMEN’S « VOLLEYBALL The Women’s Volleyball Team had a mixed season. Although not as powerful as once thought, the - Crusaders were still a formidable force with which to be reckoned. On February 8th, Coach Pete Wilson gathered his top athletes and headed to the Conference Championships. In the finals Wheaton had wrestlers in eight out of the ten weight classes. They took second place at the Illinois Area Championships, losing by a narrow margin to a “very strong University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee team.” At the NCAA III Championships, the team, led by Coach Jon Lederhouse, assisted by Robyn Borleis and co-captains Linda Chambers and Jill Cicero, finished 16th of 70 teams. This year’s record was 9-7 in conference and 14-12 overall, missing 3rd place by just one game. The North Park and Augustana games were the two highlights of the season. North Park was designated Beach Night. The gym was packed by an enthusiastic crowd despite a tough loss of 65-58. However, revenge was taken on Augustana, who had defeated the Crusaders earlier in the season. Two losses were particula rly disappointing: the championship game of the Franklin Christmas Tournament, and the overtime loss at North Central. Donn Nelson was selected on the 1st team All-Conference squad, but was not elected by the coaches as CCIW player of the year. In the world, there have been several airplane i hijacks, crashes, the shuttle explosion, the Mexico City earthquake, Khadafi's attacks, the American retaliation ... 1985-86 will not be easily forgotten. Try looking at the world around you with different eyes. Let the visual images of TOWER soak in. Remember those campus issues? The questioning of the pledge (the Swinefest), the realistic and i thought — provoking selections of movies, the construction of the Blanchard Plaza, and the reconstruction of Blanchard Hall, the issue of administrative communication with students and faculty staff, especially in the resignation of Dr. Bragg, and the effort to bridge cultures, bringing us to world awareness .... The editor's task is not simple. Together with Becky and Steve, I learnt more about communicating, and about people. This yearbook is about people, the little people and the big people.
