With every picture we put in this book, the theme is revealed. Everyone at Wheaton is basically an average, ordinary person; and yet, each member of the Wheaton Community is extraordinary. Each individual has accomplished something extraordinary, realized or not, during or before his her time at Wheaton. The Metcalf Pillars were chosen to represent this theme for a specific reason; although they appear to be ordinary pillars, what they stand for is actually extraordinary. They symbolize a link between old and new, upper and lower, campuses. They are a part of Wheaton’s history. They are carrying this history into the present and future. Whether one admires them for their aesthetic beauty or their historicai significance is not as im- portant as the fact they they are admired and appreciated by many. Whether open to the entire campus or restricted to an individual, or group, the selection would most likely have produced the same results. In choosing Vincent Cuccaro, professor of Italian, the members of the Senior Class were, in a sense, carrying on a new tradition—a tradition of sup- port and a show of care and gratitude. The dedication of a book is a permanent state- ment. Each time the book is opened, or remem- bered, recollections of the person to whom the dedication is given, are stirred up; these memo- ries, therefore, become permanent. This may not be necessary in this instance—Professor Cuccaro will be remembered, and what he has done at Wheaton will remain permanent without the assis- tance of a book. We hope that others on campus share in our ex- pressed dedication to Professor Cuccaro. We dedicate this book to his dedication and devotion to the Wheaton Community. cf s ' - 10 11 12 PERDITA HUSTON Scholar In Residence secret recipe for success Ne Joues pas le jeu de l'indifference; savoir s'emouvoir: c'est cela qui nous rend la vie supportable Woman Albert Camus - La Peste values that the pri ce of pe ace withstand the test of time. For some, this has repre- sented rehearsal of a profes- sional role they will pursue for years; for others, this has meant an opportunity to plan, direct and lead a large group all day, every day, for 13 weeks.” SO oneamunn=nuno—N “Success is a hard word to define; it means different things to different people, We hope we have added to students’ insights into social and cul- tural behavior; that by taking Sociolo- gy and Anthropology they are more alert to issues in societies and more aware of fictions that pass for truth; and that these perspectives will guide them to more effective lives and liv- ing. m@o ro=N0N OM Amno Ss 70O0O en = TFT TH = —0a SM ‘Music reveals us to ourselves, and to each other, in a way nothing else can or should. It has taught members of the class of 1982 how to search for infor- mation, how to select the relevant, how to analyze, and how to communi- cate. Many have exper- ienced defeat, but most have developed humil- ity. They have learned that theatre, like life, is a political game as well. They have portrayed mothers, daughters, sisters, strippers, drunks, and career women. They have been the senile, the brilliant, the strong, the pathetic, the insane, the young and old. The staff consisted of just ordinary people who managed to create a book of extraordinary things. Through art, layout, copy, photog- raphy, and various other tasks, the staff was able to create a book full of memories. We, the editorial staff, would like to ex- press our thanks to those persons who were dedicated to the production of yet another Nike. The hard work that was done on this yearbook is in itself extraor- dinary.
