Rvinceley cdlece ‘parton, Ma. H el pit noe Education Awa re NneoS Ttaae Our bod At first we felt but shadows-small and wished Our Swift return to realms of peace, half-vague Where laughter, music, nectar sweet had ruled With Jove in airy court, touched o’er with stars; But plucked by Prometheus from that bliss, flung down Through space, to earth we came, from earth we grew, And on a round and crusty globe we found Our home on dimple small near sparkling pond Which we here praise and hail with love; for here Swift-snaring ’wareness enveloped our minds with proof Of heavens high, horizons wide, and on The clear, sharp, frosty nights, we raised our eyes To gaze upon the milk-white stairs Rose tier on tier to reach the topmost crust Of grave Olympus; on its heights, her hand Outstretched, with smiling pride, our Nike stood, Her wings, unfurl’d thundering bolts of wisdom clear, Her pearl-grey eyes flash’d thundering bolts of strength, With steel-bound bridle sent Pegasus whose reins We all part guide; and now, o’er striving years Upon his winged back, the summit we tred And Vict’ry’s welcome meet; her hand sweeps wide, Our gaze, in following, surveys the earth... . “There buds the promise of celestial worth!” “Our task — the central mission of the liberal arts — is to teach as much as we are able about the necessary universe — to be surveyed, about how to define problems, and about probabilities and projections which allow the solving of problems. We must train our students in questioning and caring. To be liberally educated, they must know something of the history of mankinds’ thinking, economic and social realities of choice-making and planning: They must learn to see themselves through another’s eyes with colorful per- spective: they must know enough of the mind of the scien- tist so that they will not be the victims of mindless technol- ogy; and they must learn to communicate with even greater precision and beauty.” PRESIDENT ALICE F. Even with a nucleus of returning varsity play- ers and promising freshmen, the hockey team managed a 4-2-3 record. The forward line, consisting of co-captains Mary McCormick and Gail Iarrobino, Sally Clarke, Leslie Ross and leading scorer Holly Armstrong, gave the opposition little rest. Joan McNamara and Deb- bie Lindegren were tough on defense, aiding goaltender Brooke Jones in keeping the goal area clear. Jones was also assisted by newcomers Leslie Hanselman, Jane Scheide and Eliza- beth White. The field hockey team is looking forward to a successful season next year with a more experienced team. 69 70 FACULTY STUDENT ROUND ROBIN Amoaosour37idnd3ydd 71 72 HALLOWEEN BANQUET “Try it, you’ll like it.” as 74 75 Pos r od 2 OL dl Oe Cb ae als = FRESHMAN NIGHT AT THE CAGE Bore ong ony PSS ee 79 wAeesssese 9?” eR eenes Sy SHOCKS: é | veene i ? 3 THE SENIOR CLASS PRESENTS: 81 A CHAMPAGNE SEMI-FORMAL 82 BOCCACCIO: ‘Tales From the Decameron’ og WHEATON ? a) COLLEGE WY NORTON, MASSACHUSETTS 02766 85 Karen Kaligan, Lily Gomez, Anne-Marie DeZonia, Mari Nakano, Lisa Storey, Linda Leonard, Kazuko Inoue, Doreen Reagan, Lee Alexakos, Allena Zecha, Neal Hig- gins, Betty Ruggles, Kathleen Dresley, Janice Nardone, Cynthia Shaw. — WIN LOSS iE 6 4 0 Placed 2nd in Massachusetts inter- collegiate tournament. 87 = O U oO = LARGOM MLIMITED McINTIRE so Fels 90 ett SH eEEHEN ee eS he La PEPE HRS es Saint SWIMMING thesis Monica Albrecht, Cameron Creed, Lisa DeMaio, Susan Doane, Michelle Euart, Mary Evans, Carol Hawley, Suzanne Hep- worth, Susanne Hoff, Mary Jortberg, Traudi Miller, Kerilyn Orcutt, Marie Reardon, Susan Smith, Cynthia Vail Yeon sess oe See RS ad CHRISTMAS VESPERS Scie 94 tS PBs Res ce es 95 WINE AND CHEESE PARTIES oem ae 96 RAL IP HeseaTye RUSSIAN CHRISTMAS PARTY 97 98 STUDENT — FACULTY BASKETBALL GAME 99 MEDIEVAL BANQUET WHEATON ey ae COLLEGE NORTON, MASSACHUSETTS 02766 rg pend ht Rie TER er ze 101 CHRISTMAS STORIES WITH PRESIDENT EMERSON 102 103 pebbeaeee ; 3 ek i] % erats s 4 ve ae eo ee. = _—_ a baubs -— -— 106 CHOICE SERVING BEERS W NES mi aD COCKTAILS 107 N Ds Le O Lu IN Lu Wu oO ue O oO Lu ac t— 108 From the Dakotas and Minnesota across the Great Lakes and down the Eastern sea board to shivering Florida, the winter 1976-77 is already one of the coldest since the U.S. began keeping weather statistics . . .
