Why does a college that has been so innovative both in curriculum and in the management of student life never- theless strike many observers as a bastion of conservatism? The answer is, | think, that Wheaton does conserve and always has conserved the best of its found- ers’ aims and ideals even while responding continually to changes in society and to new educational opportunities. Samuel Valentine Cole expressed it as ‘‘Old ideals and new horizons.’’ How could one say it better 2 And what could be more characteristic of the Wheaton that you and | know? Another phrase that repeats and repeats itself to me comes from J. Edgar Park’s Wheaton Hymn, ‘‘Early found- ers still are we.'’ All who are concerned about Wheaton, whether as students, trustees, teachers, or administrative officers, must recognize that we are builders for the future, that this college will still be increasing its usefulness when today’s efforts are considered part of Wheaton’s early years. The ‘‘abundant life’, to use another Wheaton phrase, is surely: the life that is lived for others, and | shall always remember the unselfishness and the objective concern for education in its broadest sense which are expressed here especially by students but which also inhere in much of what | have shared with faculty members and Trustees. One early founder departs to be replaced by another who will, in turn, join your search for new horizons, guided by old ideals. Together you will continue to confirm Wheaton’s commitment to the life that is lived abundantly. W. C. H. Prentice President William C. H. Prentice, as the fourth President of Wheaton is himself an early founder. His own dedication to Wheaton's commitment has greatly enhanced the quality of education that we receive at Wheaton. On behalf of all the stu- dents at Wheaton the yearbook staff would like to express our most sincere gratitude for his continued efforts which have strengthened the foundations on which Wheaton College was built. 24 Dean of the College Professor of Government This year marked the return of Nancy Heer to Wheaton as the new Dean of the college. She’s delighted to be back after spending the past two years teaching in California. Dean Heer has been a quiet but active force on campus. Her lifestyle focuses on the word involvement! She has suggested many possible programs for Wheaton and is busily expanding current ones. Nancy Heer sees Wheaton in a very positive sense and feels that as a women’s college, Wheaton has the respon- sibility to insist women take themselves seriously and to prepare a woman to cope with the variety of roles she may undertake during her lifetime. She also feels the col- lege should instill an awareness of the alternatives a woman has in pursuing her individual goals. This is a challenging path to take, but with Nancy Heer as an excellent example and involved administrator, the growth of women at Wheaton is well assured!! Convocation Fall 1974 Sharon Jackiw Associate Dean of the College Associate Professor of German Jeanne Faria, Secretary | am a student and teacher of German language, lit- erature, and civilization, a civilization renowned for its great thinkers. Before coming to Wheaton, | had learned and taught only in coeducational institutions. Being at Wheaton has given me a fresh perspective on all those great thinkers and their great thoughts; may | quote just two illustrative examples?’ ‘‘Men have broad shoulders and narrow hips, and accordingly they possess intelligence. Women have narrow shoulders and broad hips. Women ought to stay at home; the way they were created indicates this, for they have broad hips and a wide fundament to sit upon, keep house and bear and raise children.”’ (Luther, ese ‘| have promised to tell you of a few more physical peculiarities of mature femininity . We attribute a larger amount of narcissism to femininity, which also affects woman’s choice of object, so that to be loved is a stronger need for them than to love. The effect of penis envy has a share, further, in the physical vanity of women, since they are bound to value their charms more highly as a late compensation for their original sexual inferiority. Shame, which is to be consid- ered a feminine characteristic PAR EXCELLENCE but is far more a matter of convention than might be supposed, has as its purpose, we believe, concealment of genital deficiency . The fact that women must be regarded as hav- ing little sense of justice is no doubt related to the predominance of envy in their mental life;| for the demand for justice as a modification of envy and lays down the condition subject to which one can put envy aside. We also regard women as weaker in their social interests and as having less capacity for subliming their instincts thanmen. . . ' (Freud, 1932) | can somehow no longer bring to these views all my former detached scholarly interest. In fact, my respon- ses now range from wild hilarity to pessimistic despair. This, | think, is what my students mean when they describe a course of study as having relevance for them.” 25 26 ean of Students Office E. The mark of the opportunities it offers women is in the acceptance rate at graduate schools, law schools, business schools and in the successful careers our graduates pursue. The faculty has constantly improved during my ten years here. The students seem more serious — more concerned with careers and competing less concerned with public issues.” ‘Wheaton offers a woman a brief period to develop her interests and capabilities without the distracting competition of men. Though Wheaton women are apt to be too submissive in class, it is a challenge to try and make them squawk. ’ Curtis Dahl Samuel Valentine Cole Professor of English Jay S. Goodman Professor of Government 66 . .a single sex college makes it easier for students to develop as individuals and not be dominated or distracted by the opposite sex.”’ Thomas Julian McCormick Wright-Shippee Professor of Art “. . .’mimpressed with my writing students’ commitment to their own personal growth, beyond mapped out course work. Perhaps Wheaton’s relative seclusion encourages a certain reflection and self-awareness; perhaps it’s a part of experiencing women, apart from male-defined roles. Whatever the reasons, I'm often excited, often moved and encouraged by my students’ thrust towards living their lives as fully and deeply as possible.”’ Kathryn Van Spanckeren Instructor in English 55 W here wanders the woman in search of her soul H ere supported and nurtured in her ol ic-tan) o) mi coll of) E ach person becoming all that she might A fter exploring the paths toward maturity Traveling onward secure in her sense of self O bserve the fulfillment N egating allusions of incapacity E. People who hand out rewards and punishments in even- handed ways, treating individuals equally, not with less respect or smaller rewards because of their birth or breeding or skin color. People who have sympathy, in the strict sense of that word, with other people and attempt to participate in others’ feelings and thoughts. People who, at their best, are genu- inely loving and feel a oneness with other human beings that most of us feel only with respect to members of our immediate fami- lies. People who are honest, not attempting to achieve their own ends by misleading others. People who are idealistic, setting standards and goals for themselves and for the world which may transcend realistic achievement but which can nevertheless fix the direction of a life. People thrive on effort and hard work and sacrifice. The world has always moved ahead because of the existence of such peo- ple. Are they dying out in the present genera- tion? Certainly not. Everyone in the class laughed at Baby girl. ‘Did you ever see a girl pilot?’’ yelled Bob. ‘Well it is possible. All | have to do is learn to fly real well,”’ defended Baby girl. ‘Girls aren't supposed to fly airplanes. Only boys are pilots; right, teacher? ’ asked Mike. “Well boys and girls, | must admit that | have never seen a woman airplane pilot. Didn’t you once say that you wanted to be a teacher, Baby girl?’’ asked the teacher. “No, | always wanted to be a pilot,’’ claimed Baby girl. “See Baby girl,’’ the teacher sermonized, ‘‘most girls work only a few years after they are done with school. Then they get married and spend all their time raising a family.”’ “Yeah, girls are too stupid to be airplane pilots,’’ shouted Nelson. “Well how come | get all A’s, and you get all C’s?’’ asked Baby girl proudly. In the preliminary stages our ini- tial goals were to stimulate a declining interest in the college yearbook, to re-establish a good credit rating with the College Gov- ernment Treasury, and to make this year’s yearbook a foundation upon which future yearbooks could built —_ better ones. In retrospect, we feel N | KE ] 975 that these goals have been achieved. These goals however, could not have evolved without the hard work and dedication of the staff. It is to those staff members who stayed up with us all night, redoing layout mats four and five times over and accepted criticism from us that we are particularly grateful. Although we have made a sin- cere and honest attempt to reflect Wheaton as it was in 1974-1975, as in anything, certain individuals and groups have been slighted. We make then, no claims to complete- ness and leave it up to your mem- ory to fill in the gaps. Betsy Leavitt PTT “If we had the chance to do it all again, Aiioon Moree | Tell Id Id we?
