' or i j ee Sato eae ay You see, | have made a great discovery: | no longer believe in anything. Objects do not exist for me in so far as a rapport exists be- tween them and between them and myself. In other words, it is not the objects that mat- ter to me but what is in between them; it is this ‘“‘in-between’”’ that is the real subject of my pictures. When one reaches this state of harmony between things and oneself, one reaches a sort of intellectual néant—what | can only describe as a state of perfect free- dom and peace—which makes everything possible and right. Life then becomes a per- petual revelation. Ca, c’est de la vrai poésie. George Braque Na D = eo) U Zz 2) Pie i ae The night is setting softly with the hush of falling leaves, Casting shivering shadows on the houses through the trees; _ And the light from a street lamp paints a pattern on my wall Like the pieces of a puzzle, or a child’s uneven scrawl. Up a narrow flight of stairs, in a narrow little room, As | lie upon my bed, in the early evening gloom, Impaled on my wall, my eyes can dimly see The pattern of my life, and the puzzle that is me. From the moment of my birth, to the instant of my death, There are patterns | must follow just as | must breathe each breath. Like a rat in a maze, the path before me lies, And the pattern never alters until the rat dies. The pattern still remains on the wall where darkness fell; And it’s fitting that it should, for in darkness | must dwell. Like the color of my skin, or the day that | grow old, My life is made of patterns that can scarcely be controlled. President of the College Walter James Kenworthy, A.B., A.M., Ph.D., Dean of the College Evelyn Irene Banning, A.B., A.M., Ed.D., Associate Dean of the College 15 16 During her years as Dean of Students, many have come to know and feel the wis- dom of Miss Colpitts. She has demonstrated an active belief in student ideas and a ready support for dynamic, constructive change. Many have appreciated her re- sponse to apprehensive parents that Wheaton has confidence in its girls, in their capacity for leadership and mature judgment in all situations. | From individual welcome letters in September through holiday parties and the presentation of coveted recipes to marriage-bound seniors at graduation time, Miss Colpitts and Barking Acres will remain famous for special attention to those little things which do, indeed, make Wheaton, Wheaton. Thank you, Miss Colpitts, for your assurance that youth is not always wasted on the young, for the gift of your time, interest, and caring for us. ‘‘Out of the wisdom of the heart the mouth speaketh.” May we, the students, be granted the wisdom of grateful hearts to practice those lessons in living which you have so faithfully taught. YS errs whey tat! The man bent over his guitar, A shearsman of sorts. The day was green. They said, ‘“‘You have a blue guitar, You do not play things as they are.” The man replied, ‘‘Things as they are Are changed upon the blue guitar.”’ And they said then, “‘But play, you must, A tune beyond us, yet ourselves, A tune upon the blue guitar Of things exactly as they are.”’ | cannot bring a world quite round, Although | patch it as I can. | sing a hero’s head, large eye And bearded bronze, but not a man, Although | patch him as | can And reach through him almost to a man. If to serenade almost to man Is to miss, by that, things as they are, Say that it is the serenade Of a man that plays a blue guitar.... Throw away the lights, the definitions, And say of what you see in the dark That it is this or that it is that, But do not use the rotted names. How should you walk in that space and know Nothing of the madness of space, Nothing of its jocular procreations? Throw the light away. Nothing must stand Between you and the shapes you take When the crust of shape has been destroyed. You as you are? You are yourself. Not only would Wheaton students have lost a respected and much loved professor, and generations of alumnae a figure to whom they are peculiarly devoted, but the world would have been the poorer by several admirable books. Felici- tous in his wedding of learning with style, Mr. Knapton is the most productive and among the most distinguished of Wheaton authors. His books have been published by the best houses both here and abroad. His Empress Josephine had found such a wide and responsive audi- ence that it is being reissued as a paperback and the Press has demanded a sequel. It is good news that next year, as Professor Emeri- tus, Mr. Knapton will continue teaching. We rejoice that still another generation of Wheatonians will have the privilege of knowing his art in speech, his charm as raconteur, his wisdom and his wit. It may be asked with the hands firmly placed half-way up either side of the lectern, or with the six-foot frame relaxed in front of Meneely’s cinder block walls, or with the arms pantomiming the technique of wielding a ‘‘two-handed engine.”’ There is a pause and then the plea, ‘‘Come on. Somebody must know the answer.’’ Eventually the facts emerge, all the details fit into place, even the ones that seemed irrelevant a few lectures ago, and the picture is complete. The picture might as easily have been of Huck Finn’s river or Dickens’ London. In seminar, it would be accompanied by the weekly batch of brownies, and a chance to perceive more quickly the twinkle in the eye that betrays the outrag- eous dead-pan comment. A student observation that his book in the highly competitive field of seventeenth-century poetic style had recently been chosen for reprinting might encourage the twinkle, or it might bring on a shrug of genuine modest embarrassment. 55 ARN ete ay pi If you really feel you owe it to the human race, to yourself, or to your idea of the relationship you are trying to establish between yourself and it, then whatever it is do it. Seek goodness everywhere, and when it is found, bring it out of its hiding-place and let it be free and unashamed. Place in matter and in flesh the least of the values, for these are the things that hold death and must pass away. Discover in all things that which shines and is beyond corruption. Encourage virtue in whatever heart it may have been driven into secrecy and sorrow by the shame and terror of the world. Ignore the obvious, for it is unworthy of the clear eye and the kindly heart. Be the inferior of no man, nor of any man be the superior. Remember that every man is a variation of yourself. No man’s guilt is not yours, nor is any man’s innocence a thing apart. Despise evil and ungodliness, but not men of ungodliness or evil. These, un- derstand. Have no shame in being kindly and gentle, but if the time comes in the time of your life to kill, kill and have no regret. In the time of your life, live—so that in that wondrous time you shall not add to the misery and sorrow of the world, but shall smile to the infinite delight and mystery of it. We were talking—about the love we all could share—when we find it To try our best to hold it there—with our love With our love—we could save the world — if they only knew. Try to realize it’s all within yourself no-one else can make you change And to see you’re really only very small, and life flows on within you and without you. We were talking—about the love that’s gone so cold and the people, Who gain the world and lose their soul— they don’t know—they can’t see—are you one of them? When you’ve seen beyond yourself— then you may find, peace of mind, is waiting there— And the time will come when you see we’re all one, and life flows on within you and without you. What’s the real truth about that familiar or- ange box of Knox Unflavored Gelatine sitting on your kitchen shelf right now? Can it do all the fabulous things for your beauty and your well-being they say it can, and still make exciting dishes? Of course it can. Gelatine is concerned with your appearance in at least two important ways. And it’s sheer magic in the kitchen. Actually, the kitchen is where it all started. Started way back in your great-grandmother’s time, when women first learned about Mr. Knox's sparkling crystals, first started mak- ing those heavenly chiffons, soufflés, jellied soups, salads and casseroles. More magical than ever today, with modern housewives finding short cuts to the showiest of chilled surprises. Every cookbook today has oodles of ideas for turning fresh foods, fruits and juices into five-minute angel fare. Fact! Fact, too, is that unflavored gelatine is all protein with some very special properties. Quite by accident, for example, doctors have discovered (and published proof) that Knox helps avoid fragile, broken, split fingernails. Helped grow long, strong nails for 7 out of 10 women who drank one envelope of Knox a day for 90 days. The odds are in your favor! Fact three is that millions of women find Knox is like will power in a packet when it comes to keeping to a diet. One envelope one- half hour before each meal can dull hunger pangs, curb mealtime appetites, let you eat less and like it. Works with any medically- approved diet, or the special Knox Plan many doctors recommend. For details, write Knox, Johnstown, N.Y. You'll find it most helpful. Fingernails and weight control both concern beauty and even health, of course. And that— no matter how many other wondrous gelatine benefits you hear about— = ee, is as far as we will go. Now if you will just go as far as your kitchen cupboard, for that friendly orange box... KNOX GELATINE, INC., JOHNSTOWN,N.Y, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas R. Shepard, Jr. Four years of fun and learning, Of history and art. Now comes your graduation, From Wheaton you'll depart. These are days you’ll always treasure— Some sad, some full of fun.
