He was genuinely inter- ested in all his students, and his door was always open to anyone whether he knew her or not. He knew how to stimulate eac h student's intellect and make her think for herself. Perhaps what meant most to his students was his ability to make them feel that not only were they learning from him, but also he from them. Those of us who knew Mr. Lewin are grateful to have had the privilege. Susan J. Specialized activities, simplified language learning, lack of time and curiosity, social taboos and brainwashing in its many aspects are threat- ening to reduce conversation to small talk, stereotyped repetition or just plain noise. The method that provided Plato, Erasmus and Hegel with their efficient means of ideological expression may be about to vanish unless great efforts are made to preserve it. It is our responsi- bility at the schools and universities, and particularly at the colleges of liberal arts, to make such efforts. Conversation should be our major ex- tracurricular activity, as well as a common technique in the application of our curriculum. For study and exercise will help us achieve knowl- edge, but only conversation, and thinking, will lead to wisdom. Roberto Ruiz DR. By the door a mirror holds its miniature room, contained tightly. Hung with Mexican beads— pink yellow black— it hangs suspended at two. A cot iron-runged, sheets drag with dust. A window black-paned keeps out the air. Over a desk bulb-lit a girl’s white face. Eyes strain brown-lidded after a scratching pen. In the silence posters peel infinitesimally. And under an ‘impossible blue sky dolls play in paper waters. The student teacher, combining two areas of academic life, must project herself as a teacher while retaining her curiosity and perspective as a student. Her success de- pends on her ability to formulate and com- municate ideas to her students, and at the same time respond to and learn from their academic efforts. S.L. What’s the real truth about that familiar or- ange box of Knox Unflavored Gelatine sitting - on your kitchen shelf right now? Can it do all the fabulous things for your beauty and your well-being they say it can, and still make exciting dishes? Of course it can. Gelatine is concerned with your appearance in at least two important ways. And it’s sheer magic in the kitchen. Actually, the kitchen is where it all started. Started way back in your great-grandmother’s time, when women first learned about Mr. Knox’s sparkling crystals, first started mak- ing those heavenly chiffons, soufflés, jellied soups, salads and casseroles. More magical than ever today, with modern housewives finding short cuts to the showiest of chilled surprises. Every cookbook today has oodles of ideas for turning fresh foods, fruits and juices into five-minute angel fare. Fact! Fact, too, is that unflavored gelatine is all protein with some very special properties. Quite by accident, for example, doctors have discovered (and published proof) that Knox helps avoid fragile, broken, split fingernails. Helped grow long, strong nails for 7 out of 10 women who drank one envelope of Knox a day for 90 days. The odds are in your favor! Fact three is that millions of women find Knox is like will power in a packet when it comes to keeping to a diet. One envelope one- half hour before each meal can dull hunger pangs, curb mealtime appetites, let you eat less and like it. Works with any medically- approved diet, or the special Knox Plan many doctors recommend. For details, write Knox, Johnstown, N.Y. You'll find it most helpful. Fingernails and weight control both concern beauty and even health, of course. And that— no matter how many other wo ndrous gelatine benefits you hear about— : gees is as far as we will go. Now if you will just go as far as your kitchen cupboard, for that friendly orange box...
