DEDICATION The Class of 1964 dedicates Nike 1964 to Mrs. Elizabeth S. May in appreciation of the fifteen years of devotion which she has given to Wheaton College in the capacities of pro- fessor, dean, and acting president. In the crucial year 1961 she brought the experience of professor of economics and researcher in that field to the highest position of the college administration. With these qualifications she has worked conscientiously to correct the errors of the past and to create a blueprint for an orderly future. As teacher she has been a brilliant lecturer and con- versationalist whose knowledge reaches far beyond her im- mediate field of study. She has listened with a patient sense of humor to the myriad of problems to which deans fall heir; her advice has been both helpful and illuminating. To each of us Mrs. May has been an inspiration to resist stagnation and complacency. Realizing that Wheaton has no right to claim her perma- nently, we say good-bye and wish for her future a continu- ance of the success which she has attained in the past. Robed in academic excellance. Elizabeth S. May, Dean of the College Luther Gardner Holbrook BoarD OF TRUSTEES Richard P. Chapman, A.B., M.B.A., Chairman Carrol M. WHEATON COLEE@s WELCOMES THE NEW TRUSiisES David Weld 4 : 2 4 3 | e = ADMINISTRATION William Courtney Hamilton Prentice, A.B., A.M., Ph.D. President TO THE CLASS OF 1964: Nike, the Goddess of Victory, must have been chosen as a patroness of our yearbook for some for- gotten reason. Does she symbolize conquest of childhood, of ignorance, of self, or only of the faculty? I should prefer a heroine of more modest implications, perhaps one who suggested growth and self-confidence and serenity and future promise. Ceres, perhaps? For the victory over ignorance is never won, only begun. The conquest of self has only been approached even in the saintly lives. The achievement of adulthood. in the best sense of that word. may be delayed a few years yet and even then reached only by a few of you. Your college wishes you success in whatever victories you do seek. May your years at Wheaton stand you in good stead. Greetings and farewell. You will always have a home here. Vier lite, President NANCY P. NORTON, A.B., PH.D., Assistant Dean of the College Miss Norton’s outstanding sportsmanship and fellowship qualities, which received form- al recognition from the United States Lawn Tennis Association (1959) are equally re- flected in her academic activities here at Wheaton and equally appreciated by those students seeking her aid in academic matters. ELIZABETH S. MAY, A.B., PH.D., LL.D., Dean of the College Both in her role as administrator and educator, Mrs. May has worked diligently to further the goals of higher education. Much of her infectious enthusiasm stems from her interest in the field of economics which has led her to publish numerous articles and reports and to do work for the United States government. Helen Esther Rhodes. Assistant to the Dean of Students Ellen Freedman, Administrative trainee Martha McCauley, Administrative trainee LEOTA C. COLPITTS, A.B., A.M., Dean of Students From charming hostess to wise coun- selor Miss Colpitts successfully mingles her talent for good cooking with her keen human insight, to be of constant assistance and encouragement to the entire student body. Her current world travels make more apparent her drive for knowledge, and her resultant leave of absence makes it more clear to us that she has been vital to the Wheaton Community. PAUL FREDERICK CRESSEY AN ACKNOWLEDGEMENT: During the thirty two years that Mr. Cressey has been at Wheaton, he has established a reputation both as a distinguished teacher and as a well-loved man. While always maintaining high standards of academic excellence, he has always been understanding and patient, giving specific guidance and touching everything with the insight that allows both personal and aca- demic subjects to achieve higher significance. But it is not only for this that we are grateful to him. His home has always been open to students; he has graced everything with the kindness of a quiet humor; he has initiated and organized rewarding lectures, programs, and academic functions. We deeply appreciate the many things he has done for us, and hope that the years ahead will be as rewarding for him as his years here have been for us.
