Professor Nicholas P. Vakar was born in Kiev, Russia, and re- ceived his early education at the Universities of Kiev and Moscow. He served in the Russian Army as an Artillery Senior Lieutenant during World War I, and was later awarded the St. George Military Cross. In 1920, he was appointed Counselor to the Russian Dele- gation in Poland. From 1923 to 1940, he was in Paris, writing for the Russian liberal daily and contributing to European publications in twelve languages. He came to the United States in 1941 and at- tended Harvard University, from which he received a Master’s Degree in 1945 and a Doctorate in the following year. He first came to Wheaton as a Lecturer in Russian in 1944, becoming a full Pro- fessor in 1953 and Head of the Russian Department in 1956. Dr. Vakar is an authority in Slavic philology, modern and Eastern Euro- pean languages, and Soviet psycholinguistics, and he has published articles and books on these subjects. This June, Professor Vakar is retiring, after eighteen years of sharing the culture and language of his country with Wheaton stu- dents. Although he is leaving us, his work will go on, and his many contributions will not be forgotten. To you, Dr. Vakar, we dedicate Nike, 1962, and with it go our best wishes for your continued success and happiness.
