SOCIOLOGY Dealing with man’s relationships with other men in his environment, the Sociol- ogy department attempts to bring society as a whole into focus. The student con- siders contemporary society in terms of race relations, criminology, and family relationships, and studies cultures other than our own Judeo-Christian society. Sidney A. Cultures and social conditions are considered in the light of their influence on human ac- tivities. CLASSICS Our present civilization finds many of its roots in ancient Greece and Rome. The Classics department offers courses in ancient art, literature and history which make the student more aware of the class- ical influences on following eras. Brooks Levy, A.M. ECONOMICS The Economics department offers a variety of courses which give the student an appreciative understanding both of na- tional and international economic prob- lems. Courses dealing with the history of the economic system in the United States and abroad are complemented by courses which provide the student with a practical knowledge of economy in everyday life. BIOLOGY Biology helps the student to understand the elements of organic life. By making regular visits to the quadrat assigned to her in freshman biology, each girl learns the scientific method of making Observations and keeping data. She gains a first hand account of the characteris- tics of natural organisms. In more advanced study she may explore the varieties and the development of or- ganic life through chemis- try, bacteriology, the study of evolution, and through embryology. 25
