eel eed h year pret lhe: circle building strength evel solidarity for that UeGrs tii nineteen hundred and fifty-seven WHEATON COLLEGE Norton. Mass. Presented to the Senior Class by The Jumor Class JAMES MARTIN + DR st o oO te) a W heaton is honored to dedicate Nike 1957 to Dr. John Arthur Martin in his ninth year as a member of the philosophy and religion department. His warmth of personality — both as a lecturer and as college chaplain — have won him a place of af- fection and respect. Dr. Martin first came to Wheaton in 1947 as a visiting lecturer in philosophy. The following year he joined the faculty as an associate professor and was made a full professor in 1950, Since February Dr. Martin has been at the University of Cambridge, England, doing research on the theology of Saint Paul. After a holiday of sightseeing in London and France, he plans to spend most of the summer in Yelverton, near Plymouth, doing some writing. He will return in early September, and his familiar figure will be seen at the corner of Mary Lyon between classes conversing with another member of the depart- ment or answering student questions. In appreciation for his contribution to Wheaton we respectfully dedicate our year- book to Dr. John Arthur Martin. Page 5 RY wes De SI nl Roe € Boe ® Pare a it lek iat Bs. hs te i Ms thay a ee se ls sc at DR. HOWARD MENEELY President of Wheaton College Page 8 From the very first evening of our college experience, when he gives the ever-warm welcoming speech, encouraging hesitant Freshman “Late-Bloom- ers’ or “Early-Starters’” to participate whole heartedly in the present college life, to the informal talk in S.A.B. concerning the strong foundations of the past, and the consequent respect for these early ideals, Dr. Meneely becomes known and endeared to all members of the Wheaton community as the sym- bol of our college: past, present, and this year more than ever before — BOCDU RE: Dr. Meneely, with his far-reaching insight and understanding of the physical as well as the spiritual advancement necessary to the pressing de- mands of education today, has fostered a large expansion program this year which will be vital to Wheaton’s future. In the immediate future is a new green-house, a foot-bridge to replace the present wooden structure, and the new dormitory which will house eighty additional students in the fall of 1957. Gradually other additional improvements, under Dr. Meneely’s far-see- ing, capable direction, will also appear on Wheaton’s face. We are all confident, however, that under our President the changes through which the college will grow will not only be physical, but that our community will continue to impart to each one of us the unity we feel sitting in Plimpton Hall listening to the annual Christmas story, or the pride of ac- complishment which accompanies each degree conferred at graduation by Dr. Meneely. Suggestions made their way later into Legislative Board which passed laws con- cerning open house in the dorms on Sun day afternoons, smoking after dinner in the parlors, and the suggested elimination of Freshman honor pledges. The Academic Committee working under chairmen Mary Jane Dawes and advised by Mrs. May, acts as a liason between faculty and _ stu- dents, discussing and suggesting academic pro- posals. This year the cut system and the purpose of the reading period were re-examined for clearer understanding and discussed in a joint meeting of the student committee and the Administrative Com- mittee. It was also suggested by the students of this group that the faculty be invited to more dinners, teas, and other activities in order to promote closer relations and in turn better mutual community feeling. The National Students Association here at Wheaton is a part of a country-wide organization of college students who meet together annually and more often regionally to discuss problems of “mut- ual concern.” Students at Wheaton have come to know the N.S.A. through the non-profit tours which the association sponsors in which several students have participated. This organization has many more phases which are invaluable to stu- dent understanding throughout our country and the other free countries of the world. Honor Board this year, composed of class rep: presentatives meeting with Judicial Chairman, Mar- jorie Land, has aimed at tightening and strength- ening the point system which was introduced last year, working efficiently toward more consistently objective decisions while still allowing a certain margin for human frailty and error. Page 21 N. Campbell, Treas.; M. Talbot, V. Pres.; A. Krauss, President; J. Churchill, Sec. Under the eight sections of Christian Association are handled Vespers, Freshman Commission, Junior Sister Project, Inter-Race, Inter-Faith and Volunteer work, as well as the Candlelight Service. The C.A. board now consists of fifteen members including Dr. and Mrs. Hamilton — new this year also is Mr. Booth, who is filling in for Dr. Martin. Ves- pers have been extended during reading and exam period to both Wednesday and Sunday night; other new projects are the sponsorship of a community young people’s group, work with Brownie Scouts, and several outstanding speakers, including a member of the Jehovah’s Witnesses and a priest from a nearby Roman Catholic College. Wheaton News Student-run News fills the important weekly function of keep- ing us posted. This year it has employed a strong editorial policy pushing extension of transportation, abolition of collective responsi- bility and improved faculty-student relations, Publishing of legi- slative board agenda-and minutes resulted from an editorial. An in- crease of student expression, including several fine free-speech let- ters, is a satisfying indication of student interest in and appreciation of our paper. The dorm pictures are an innovation, and the seniors are placed under their major and with the departmental pictures for greater unity. Page 26 L. Lochner, G. Aronowitz, S. Mohrfeld, A. Hutchins, M. Mallon, co-editors; Carol Alderman. Rushlight Twice a year Rushlight provides an opportunity for publications of student writing — poetry, short stories and essays. This year, under a co-editorship, the policy has been to give the magazine more variety in order that more students can contribute to and enjoy the writing. In line with this policy is the translation of a Japanese poem in the January issue. International Relations Club International Relations Club did an excellent job in bringing into focus this year on campus the two most pertinent issues of 1956 and 1957, the Presidential campaign and the Middle Eastern situation, so that all members of the college community might have a clearer understanding of all sides of the issues behind the news of the day. Everything from cam- paign objectives to political procedure Cdiscussed by Miss Smith for those who were voting for the first time) to political practices used in a small town for “getting out the vote” were dis- cussed in the fall. Attention was then turned toward the Suez Canal crisis. A student panel explained the geographical and cultural backgrounds of the countries involved. Later an Eygptian student from M.I.T. gave his views on his countries relationship toward the United States, The Is- raeli, British, and Arab sides were also taken up as well as the history-making role of the United Nations during that crucial period, all of which offered far-reaching insight into current events of this school year. Other important activities included the furniture sale in the fall, the traditional “starva- tion” dinner, and the selection of the I.R.C. Scholar who was chosen this year for the first time from applications submitted by interested junior class members of the club. This unique opportunity for summer study abroad is the culmination of the club’s desire for better under- standing, through an enlightened Wheaton representative, of the world in which we live. Page 35 (serman Club J. Gauvin, Pres.; J. Spear, Sec.- Treas. Marangelo, Sec.-Treas.; M. Badoian, Pres. Language clubs this year have highlighted current authors, travel, and slides, as well as observing the traditional festivities of the countries involved and enjoying informal opportuni- ties to speak the language at club meetings and special tables in the dining rooms. French Club opened the year with a panel discussion of the different aspects of travel moderated by Helene Lasalmonie who also showed colored slides of France. Pictures of Spain and Spanish dancing made up the first Spanish Club meeting, while German Club heard Miss Schreiner discuss the Ruhr Valley and Marian Brown describe her junior year in Germany. Other events of the three clubs included well known authors and guest speakers: Jorge Guillen a Spanish poet reading his work, “Les Gens Celebres Que J'ai Connus” given by Mme. Suzanne de Toytot, the movie “Modchen in Uniform” shown in Plimpton by the German Club, all of which were seeking clearer thinking in and speaking of a modern language. In April the three clubs met together for a gala Mardi Gras celebration sparked by music, songs, and games of other lands as well as the spirit of truly living a language — the ultimate purpose of each language club. Page 36 P. Reynolds, Sec.-Treas.; V. Branau, Pres. Meetings designed for varied interests with a common goal of under- standing different phases of literary appreciation took place in Psyche this year. An early meeting consisted of a Psyche-Rushlight tea with Dr. Kap- stein, Brown University English professor speaking on “Context and Sym- bol in the Modern Novel.” An opportunity was also offered for informal discussion of the talk. The club which met under advisor Miss Katherine Burton initiated twenty-one new members into its society, giving each a Psyche flower which is the symbol of truth and the well-rounded life — the ultimate goal of all members who are offered through the club a good chance to broaden outlooks through literature. . ddddda, 4idadaaas id @ fen COE ja Gas ban Ona) mi Vvan Cott, A, Hutch- ens, M. Science Club held a highly successful symposium in October com- posed of lectures, exhibits, and informal discussions of the various science departments. This event was held primarily in order to introduce the stu- dents of neighboring high schools to science and to stimulate interest in the various fields. Club meetings consisted of talks and lectures directed toward scientific thought and goals with a realization of the past and pre- sent strides towards a richer future. J. Rowe, Pres., S. Defoe, Sec.- Treas. Miss Banning was guest speaker at the Psychology Club’s first meet- ing this year. She talked about opportunities in psychology for majors who were perhaps unaware of the numerous openings in the field. Also includ- ed in the rostrum of speakers for the year were a psychiatrist and an oc- cupational therapist whose talks were followed by question and answer periods. Such occasions helped greatly to clarify understanding and in- tensify interest, outside of the classroom, in psychology. Page 38 ANKE HWY CC) Oo Ce () M u S i C G | u b Above: Treas.; B. Gordon, Left: T. Roghaar, Adkins, Sec. Treas. The emphasis in Music Club this year has been on. various concerts and recitals of interest to all members. On April twenty-third Miss Emily Fritzsche, a student at the New Eng- land Conservatory of Music gave a recital on the piano and harp. Also Miss Duncan and Mr. Ramseyer (the club’s advisor) gave a two piano concert of classical selections. Music Club sp onsors the college concert series which was cut down to one concert given in February. B. Gelders, Sec. Pres. Pres.; L. Kalliope Garufus, Elizabeth Slack, and Hilary Thompson discussed summer in Greece for the Classics Club’s first meeting. All college lectures were given by Miss Lucetta Mowray on the Dead Sea Scrolls, their significance and interpretation, and Professor Sterling Dow gave a highly informative talk entitled “A New Light on Homer” concerning Linear B and oral poetry. The club’s activities were concluded in a closed meet- ing which featured the reading of Greek poetry aloud and interpretation. Below: S. Pattershall, D. Di Pietro, T. Villa, Pres. A C Sa (a) Interest seemed campus-wide in Art Club’s activities this year. An excellent film was shown on the art of ancient Eygpt which offered a very worthwhile background for many interests. Another outstanding event sponsored by the club was the lecture concerning traffic accidents in art at the crossroads of history, giv- en by the world renown Dr. Irwin Panofsky. This lecture was sponsored by the Shippee Art Collection th rentals of ean also compose part of the club’s work on campus, and brighten’ many otherwise — blank dormitory walls. Page 41 Christmas Time Undoubtedly the most warm-spirited event on campus this year was the Christmas banquet along with all the trimmings whichwent into making the evening a huge success. The freshman class worked for weeks on the perky decorations which lined the dining room walls and added so much to the festivities. Then faculty and students alike sat down to enjoy dining in an elegant style at the dinner, entertained by the sophomore class mummers who lifted the roof-tops with “God save the king of merry England!” followed by the soft singing of Christmas carols as they left. The Nativity tableaux in back of $.A.B. reminded the silent viewer of the true reason for joyous hearts in that season. . Inside of Plimpton Hall while two giant Christmas trees cast a sparkley glow all around them, President Meneeley told his much anticipated Christmas story and gave awards to outstanding members of the college community. Informal dorm parties ended the evening on a high note as faculty members stuffed themselves into various forms of Jolly Old Saint Nick and set to work reading poems and giving out gifts to all of the Wheaton children. The next morning, when no one was stirring, most were awakened by the early- rising Whims and Wheatone singing carols and speeding all on their very merry holiday way. Page 42 Attendant: S. Van Ness, H. Brown. Queen: D. Robertson. a sae? The Dimple on May Day is the focus of merriment and festivities culmi- nating in the coronation of the Queen of the May. The language clubs sing their songs, and barefooted maidens dance around the traditional maypole. The majestic march of the Queen from the library steps to her throne, preceded by the procession of virtues, spirits, jesters and heralds and accom- panied by her flower girl and attendants is a tribute alike to the beauty of the spring and an honor for the lovely sophomore crowned. Page 44 Page 45 Betty Ann Spelfogel, Margaret Webb, Ann Hall, Catherine Cobb, Elinor Capen, Emilie Dana, Eda Moore, Judy Anderson, Kitsie Scarlett. DRAMATIC ASSOCIATION _ The variety of the presentations of D.A. — from Pirandello’s satire on conventional curiosity to the farcical Down to Earth, this year’s Vodvil — is in itself a complimentary comment. From actresses to prop heads the group operates smoothly and effectively; the colorful costuming and functional lighting and sound effects used in Right You Are If You Think You Are added immeasurably to the vitality and ef- fectiveness of the play. Vodvil this year was an innovation in its departure from the Wheaton scene and in its concentra- tion on fewer and larger parts — a policy which the group hopes will be continued. The drive for new members in D.A. this year will give even more drama enthusiasts a chance to enjoy the limelight or do their bit behind the scenes. White, H. Jacobs, M. Nicholson, N. Terrill, D. Pesso and N. Ives -- staff members — has constructively kept the Wheaton ball rolling. Besides the three annual sports meetings with an announcement of blue and white teams and a preview of the season’s sports the interdorm tournaments, playdays, riding meets, and twilight softball provided a re- lease for weary minds. The KKK money this year provided funds for repairing the cage and also for a YWCA in Greece. Amanda Tevepaugh 60 won the tennis cup this fall, and the class of ‘60 won the swimming marathon by miles. Outing Club dissolved into Outing Activities with its representative to the A.A. board. Interested sailors are working for their sport, and the skiers enjoyed their midsemester trip to Stowe. Triton Show and Dance Concert were as usual eagerly awaited and pleasantly remembered events, as was the perennial favorite faculty-stu- dent softball game and picnic. Page 51 p—ei J. Kaufmann, B.
