C. A. and War Relief The the World Fellowship drive, and lectures Candlelight — service, on such pertinent subjects as mar- riage, religion and education are only part of the work of C.A. They also entertain the freshmen with campfire onions and campfire singing euetictall picnic, take care of the -second hand store, and bring us silent chapel. C.A. was represented at work camps in Boston and at con- ferences as far west as Ohio. Norton Middy Night School and Play Club draw the community and the college closer, while the Social Committee draws the college and the world closer with events like the Riding Meet dance and an evening of square dancing. The work of these committees and many more, guided by President Middy Hollis, made the year a C.A. success. The Defense Corps under Captain Perry was set up even before the inci- dent at Pearl Harbor. Faculty and student air raid wardens were appointed in each dormitory, and fire fighting, stretcher and messenger units were trained. Lieutenant Brady continued to give the first aid course, and a motor corps and mechanics course were organized, as well as classes in mili- tary drill. The Sem was again the center for war relief sewing and knitting, and afternoon tea served by faculty, faculty wives, and Mrs. Fill- more enhanced the virtue of being patriotic. [25]

Beano led C.G.A. through a war-time year for Whea- ton with a platform built upon co-operation and under- standing. Working more closely with other campus organiza- C.G. A. tions, C.G.A. accomplished its tasks in less time. Co-operation meant a uniform policy which included the cutting down of expenditures and the simplification of the work of the more important offices on campus. The latter was for the purpose of spreading extracurricular activities to include more students in the actual running of the college. Beano’s theory of understanding worked famously in Cabinet and among all the students, for campusing was cut down to one-tenth that of previous years, and suspension of late pers was cut down to one-third. Cabinet found it necessary to talk with only five students, and it suspended no one’s class cutting privileges. This spring C.G.A. inaugurated the new room choosing plan. The Student Beano Parlor issue was settled when C.G.A. decided to reserve it for the seniors only, and C.G.A. tickets to Boston became more practical when it was decided to sell them in halves. A committee of three seniors worked on a revision of the Campus Life sec- tion in the Handbook. With her familiar consistency and calmness, Beano encouraged inquiry into all of Cabinet’s activities, and the busy room on second floor Metcalf became a clearing house for all stu- dent headaches and ideas. D. A. Founders’ Day Plays were D. A.’s first answer to the challenge of defense and war relief work. “Oracle,” the juniors’ Greek tragedy, won first place, while the seniors and sophomores presented two comedies. Omitting the fall play, D. A. counted hours in sewing bouts at the “Sem.” Christmas brought the Nativity with Virginia Loeb as Mary and Above: Ciddy Below: Background for the aesthetic [ 26 J Sybil Bumford as Joseph. D.A. and the sophomores romped through Mummers’ Play. “Back with Interest” came D.A. and A.A. providing pre- seminary and contemporary Wheaton life and laughter with Ciddy, Rellie, Dagmar, and Willy. Climaxing the spring Shakespeare symposium was “The Winter's Vales gees re-systematized, too. Miss Hub- bell and Helen Boord filed costumes efficiently, and Helen Masson catalogued properties. Officers of D.A. were president, Ciddy Hall; vice-president, Betsey Mackay; secretary, Gainor Lowry; treasurer, Dag- mar Mariani. Lydia Geer was Scenery Manager; other heads of committees were Beebe, Boote, Bumford, Pedrick, Wales.
