ae SF, Norton COMPILED BY. THE JUNIOR CLASS FOR THE SENIOR CLASS Massachuselts HERE is very little in this book to remind you of air raid drills and uni- forms. We have made it so. Wheaton as a college has been extremely aware of the war. And this book is to make you extremely ran of college. We give you Peg Wheaton—her activities, her classmates, her faculty, and her life. The Editors NE can almost hear the tension in the voice of the student of the future who will read a paper upon the strange college atmos- phere of 1942, but in spite of the incredible fact that stairways of the college were blackened out and pails of sand and shovels found on upper floors and students huddled in places of refuge on a darkened campus, this book will testify to the fact that the real things of life, the interchange of ideas, humor and friendship still went on in the strangest period of Wheaton’s history. ECAUSE we like people who are interesting outside of class as well as in, because we miss one-half of this dual personality without forgetting our pride in Wheaton’s contribution to the Naval Reserve, and because we go for brownies in a big way, we dedicate this book to The Hidys Doll’s House 102 for heated = discussions in Economics; Barrows House for practising an- other economics concern- ing brownies and fudge. You didn’t know about it but we gave the Hidys coffee in the Yellow Par- lor last November. We then produced the camera and took this. Bud Creighton, flash of the hockey field and star for four years on the basketball court, was president of the Athletic Association. Vice-president Betty Cahall and secretary Les Finn were mainstays on their basketball and hockey teams while Peggy Wing, treasurer, was one of those famous Tritons. The fall Riding Meet with House in the Pines was the only intercollegiate Bud meet held all year. Captained by Sis Rabe and directed by Lucille Donle, the riding team thrilled the spectators by recapturing the cup for the drill and trotting off with the laurels in almost all the competitive classes. Sis took first place with ribbon and trophy in the championship class. Hockey was fought with high spirits to the bitter end. The play-off games were as eagerly attended as the former varsity games, and with much cheering from all the classes, the sophomores ran off with the championship. Captain Les Finn and [ 16 | Triton technique in the Betty Turner style her team defeated the freshmen in a “‘night game” to win the coveted first place. Freshman Kay Garrigues was crowned queen of the tennis court in the fall when she defeated Terry Coatsworth, sophomore runner-up. Tritons, under the direction of Dee Ensko, presented its first pageant in April. Diving, speed, and form were the basis of the class swimming meets which the sophomores won. In basketball the freshmen set a record by winning every game of the season. Interclass competition has always been almost as keen as varsity in this sport, and it shared laurels with badminton. Beano led C.G.A. through a war-time year for Whea- ton with a platform built upon co-operation and under- standing. Working more closely with other campus organiza- C.G. A. tions, C.G.A. accomplished its tasks in less time. Co-operation meant a uniform policy which included the cutting down of expenditures and the simplification of the work of the more important offices on campus. The latter was for the purpose of spreading extracurricular activities to include more students in the actual running of the college. Beano’s theory of understanding worked famously in Cabinet and among all the students, for campusing was cut down to one-tenth that of previous years, and suspension of late pers was cut down to one-third. Cabinet found it necessary to talk with only five students, and it suspended no one’s class cutting privileges. This spring C.G.A. inaugurated the new room choosing plan. The Student Beano Parlor issue was settled when C.G.A. decided to reserve it for the seniors only, and C.G.A. tickets to Boston became more practical when it was decided to sell them in halves. A committee of three seniors worked on a revision of the Campus Life sec- tion in the Handbook. With her familiar consistency and calmness, Beano encouraged inquiry into all of Cabinet’s activities, and the busy room on second floor Metcalf became a clearing house for all stu- dent headaches and ideas. [ 24 J C. A. and War Relief The the World Fellowship drive, and lectures Candlelight — service, on such pertinent subjects as mar- riage, religion and education are only part of the work of C.A. They also entertain the freshmen with campfire onions and campfire singing euetictall picnic, take care of the -second hand store, and bring us silent chapel. C.A. was represented at work camps in Boston and at con- ferences as far west as Ohio. Norton Middy Night School and Play Club draw the community and the college closer, while the Social Committee draws the college and the world closer with events like the Riding Meet dance and an evening of square dancing. The work of these committees and many more, guided by President Middy Hollis, made the year a C.A. success. The Defense Corps under Captain Perry was set up even before the inci- dent at Pearl Harbor. Faculty and student air raid wardens were appointed in each dormitory, and fire fighting, stretcher and messenger units were trained. Lieutenant Brady continued to give the first aid course, and a motor corps and mechanics course were organized, as well as classes in mili- tary drill. The Sem was again the center for war relief sewing and knitting, and afternoon tea served by faculty, faculty wives, and Mrs. Fill- more enhanced the virtue of being patriotic. [25] D. A. Founders’ Day Plays were D. A.’s first answer to the challenge of defense and war relief work. “Oracle,” the juniors’ Greek tragedy, won first place, while the seniors and sophomores presented two comedies. Omitting the fall play, D. A. counted hours in sewing bouts at the “Sem.” Christmas brought the Nativity with Virginia Loeb as Mary and Above: Ciddy Below: Background for the aesthetic [ 26 J Sybil Bumford as Joseph. D.A. and the sophomores romped through Mummers’ Play. “Back with Interest” came D.A. and A.A. providing pre- seminary and contemporary Wheaton life and laughter with Ciddy, Rellie, Dagmar, and Willy. Climaxing the spring Shakespeare symposium was “The Winter's Vales gees re-systematized, too. Miss Hub- bell and Helen Boord filed costumes efficiently, and Helen Masson catalogued properties. Officers of D.A. were president, Ciddy Hall; vice-president, Betsey Mackay; secretary, Gainor Lowry; treasurer, Dag- mar Mariani. Lydia Geer was Scenery Manager; other heads of committees were Beebe, Boote, Bumford, Pedrick, Wales. News Dusty and Peck worked on News’ Twentieth Anniversary Issue all last summer, produc- ing on November 1 the first climax in the events that pro- ceeded from the busiest room in S.A.B. Fourteen pages of print and pictures, including Dusty a story by Dr. Park, treated the history of News with all its humor, its celebrities, its policies, its ideas and fashions. The pertinent question of education stormed through the galleys before Christmas. Students suggested course correlation, smaller classes, and oppor- tunities for individual work as extensions which might lead to more successful education. ews had done its job of unearthing campus opinion. Free Speech became more important and “‘Candidly Speaking” took on a photographic character with its realistic caricatures by Ciddy and its poignant sketches of individual seniors by News’ feature writers. News had fun despite the foe staff’s suffering for ‘Toni when she made weekly attempts to find space on the dummy for fifty more inches. Peck’s revo- lutionary method of spelling and Dusty’s subtle humor, which saved the feature-head- line-stricken assistant editors from Wednesday night suicide more then once, gave News that Dusty-Peck flavor. [27 | Chief diversion at NIKE meetings was glossy gazing. When the camera started clicking May Day, ’41, and when little men began appearing on campus with big black brief cases, then everyone knew that NIKE was on the job again. Rushlight Susie started Rushlight with a new cover Susie design by Ciddy, a sonnet by Bobbins, and the editor’s own short story, ““The Early Life of Alice J. Finch.” And Susie ended Rushlight for 1941-42 with a real Spring Issue full of love stories and poems. Wheaton read eagerly four issues of a magazine representative of the finest interpretations of college life and thoughts, punctuated with illustrations by Peck, Murdock, Mackay, and Roehrich. [ 28 ] Mr. Garabe- dian and Choir officers at work. Choir Choir, in preparing the Car- ol Concert, the Spring Concert with Bowdoin, and anthems for Sundays, was especially mindful of the con- tribution which it should be making in these times. Besides donating to War Relief, Choir has aimed to present music of enduring value to all. Dance Group Nancy Kline led the Dance Group through Vaudeville’s ““Gym Boogie,”’ May Day, and the annual March recital, featuring a satire on women’s defense work, “Military Greeting.” In contrast to the previous “Dance of the City,” the Group com- posed “Dance of the Coun- try.” Accompanied by Strophe they danced to the pulsating rhythms of ““The Congo” and rounded out a program of varying rhythms with a boogie- woogie, “Themes in Varia- . tion.’ Mrs. Gallagher assisted the Group and Miss Weygand adapted its music for the dances. it on = y ea, Kay SES Tig) Ra 6 See) SS + yy ees ha tireey Karns ay ws Te x Bu ste ee wee % Mw. - -- u-- : i, Sie See Ate Gann eee ne Ree ae —_--- —- a _-o-rr —— we oe = eur .— Hy, AES Ce oe toe OO . — wot rea ed wer Hacare wee “_ — - oer ww ws -- RRT Wa, ise SS Witeecow KILL NOT MEET ? MGs i 4 D wate ene i Me ‘ we Ce lal a boas e Ch, ie 1942 We came in a time of tumult. There was a war in Europe, and there was a hurricane in New England: all the portents of change were with us. And there was disorder in our minds, too. We were told to go to the Little Theatre, but we were not told where it might be. We bought books and pencils and Wheaton stickers, and practiced writing Wheaton °42 for the first time. We were begin- ning to understand what Wheaton meant—the chapel spire at night, butter- scotch rolls, and Dr. Park. But none of us could know what °42 might mean. We gasped at Betty Berkaw, the first of us to get married; claimed Middy Hol- lis, winner of the all-college short story contest; and won the swimming meet. Sophomore year the charm of change was beginning to work. S.A.B. was going up, and not to be outdone by the blue walls and the pear-shaped rug we modernized Pegasus on our rings. This year Mummers’ was our responsibility as we laughed at Bud Creighton leading the fools. Of course we won the swim- ming meet again, doubtless inspired by the fish of our underseas Soph Hop. Song leader, Willy Martin; Treasurer, Elinor Townsend; President, Bully Lewis; Vice-president, Dee Ensko; Secretary, Tommy Snyder. | 46 | Then there was May Day, when Ginny Loeb was crowned queen, attended by Carol and Huber. It was really chaotic Junior year. We came back bewildered at being “‘upper-classmen”’ to find our freshman sisters looking smoother and older than we felt. We mobbed into Boston with six bus loads of Theatre Guilders, and cheered our own Vaude- ville and Antigone. We crowded in culture with the first of Color Symposiums. And this year we took part in making Wheaton the highest contribu- ting college to British War Relief with our share of the $4,879.65. For the first time we were able to go to movies in Plimpton Hall instead of spending our weekends looking up bus schedules to Attleboro. But one thing didn’t change—we won the swimming meet again, perhaps this time because we were still in training from our hockey victory over Harvard. The first Plimpton Prom was nifty, but Frolic was more fun. Senior year! The library steps, and the front door of chapel, and cooking coffee in our rooms. And when the war came we began to see what ’42 might really be like. There were even more changes. We now had the browsing room and a science wing; we also had a shorter spring vacation and graduation in May. We broke precedent again at Christmas: our former May Queen was the Madonna. And this year the associations cut down on their schedules while Captain Perry organized blackouts. Daisy hatched “Back With Interest,” and we took part in the first Wheaton movies. Then finally married women were allowed to live at Wheaton—Norman, Bishop, and Langsdorf were the first names to go. But we didn’t win the swimming meet. So this is °42. We came in a hurricane and we leave in a rush. No more dashes to classes, no more yellow envelopes or bus sign-ups. We are four years older, and four years wiser, and we all wear glasses.
