Relaxed? Not really' Facing Luther in their first conference tilt after dropping two non conference games the Warriors take the field Tensely everyone awaited the referee s game ending signal that would issue in another championship for Wheaton Academy Suddenly the football field was covered with 'oy crazed stu dents' At last we had finished a season undefeated' With eleven straight victories to our credit, we were positive that Wheaton Academy was unbeatable' Yes, but that was last year With only one letterman returning from last years starting lineup to some another championship seemed farfetched Stull Coach Wendy Harris, working with the greenest most lnexper lenced backfleld in years, coupled with the fine supervision of Coach Jim Pooley with the varsity line produced a team to be regarded with lustlfled pride Together as one unit, the fellows worked their goal another championship Throughout foot ball camp they determmedly chanted while domg the various llsthenlcs Beat Elmwood' Beat Elmwood' Elmwood Park proved a worthy opponent for the Warriors champs yielded thirteen devastatmg points Still fighting gamely back the Warriors electrified the crowd when Novak clutching a screen pass from quarterback Jim Bosgraf galloped through opened holes for 70 thrilling yards to a touchdown' Though the extra polnt attempt failed it made little difference for Wa stubborn Elmwood eleven Iced the game in the second half by scoring twice more The unbeatable Warriors had fmally bowed 25 to 6' A quieter, more humble team faced the revengeful Immacu late Conception squad the following week It was not a matter of not knowing what to do but somehow genuine team spirit was lacking Another disheartening defeat resulted' To be beaten once was bad enough but to be blanked 27 to 0 was worse yet' Undaunted the Warriors practiced more earnestly each day The dropping of two non conference tilts greatly sharpened their motives about the all Important homecoming game with Luther South At last the great day arrived The game was ex ceedmgly tight for the Warriors only led 7 to 0 at the half Then like an explodmg bombshell, the Harrusmen struck' Novak raced for two more touchdowns while Jervis and Rockness each added one Before a bewildered Luther South team could re tallate time was gone Triumphantly the Warriors walked off the gridiron victorious by a landslide victory of 34 to 7' Coach James Pooley Assistant Football Coach . , . . . . , . .
