An unpredictable Wheaton Academy team faced North Shore the following Saturday. Powerful, haughty North Shore was met with great zeal and determination. Two quick touch- downs were punched over by Davidson and Jervis in the first period giving the Warriors a thirteen point lead. North Shore battled back and tied the game in the second half! Feelings ran high! A deafening roar rent the air as Seeland leaping for Bosgrafs pass, pulled it in and galloped for a sensational touchdown! Sparked by a seven point lead the Warrior's line held. A dramatic victory of 20 to 13 was theirs! Now only one game stood between the Warriors and another championship! Luther North, the only undefeated team in conference play, stood menacingly in that gap! Feel- ing confident of winning their homecoming game by a slaughter, Luther North paraded gorgeous floats. The game started. Before anyone could catch his breath, Luther North, on four quick plays, punched over a touchdown! Pouncing right back the Warriors scored on a pass play to Seeland. Driven on by a wave of enthusiasm, the Harrismen scored twice more. Leading 20 to I3 at the half, they again trotted onto the field. Now came the real acid test ! The Warriors' line held! While yet in the huddle, determined hands clasp! Then amid boisterous applause, the starting five trot onto the court! Each player breathes deeply and crouches for the iump! Up goes the ball and with its rebound, a new season begins. Facing powerful I.C. in the opening game, the Warriors displayed great potential. Along the sideline Coach Pooley, making his debut as basketball coach, shouted encouragement to the fellows. The game grew tighter and more nerve- iangling! As the remaining seconds fleeted, the Warriors staged one last des- perate effort! Like a mysterious enchantment the court quieted. Sadly enough the score remained 46 to 43 - l.C.'s favor. Never , quipped the Alumni squad, but for once they were wrong! Sparked by Sullivan and Thompson, the game developed into a parade and ended with victory celebrations - 46 to 42! Sporting a 'I and 'l record, the Warriors faced Luther South. Unfortunately Wendling of Luther South netted 32 points to hand the Warriors a resounding 80 to 69 defeat! Watch out for Stone! That was the cry of anguish from the Warriors in the fourth quarter against Francis Parker! Leading the entire game, they saw their lead dwindle until Stone's continual bombardment put Parker out in front to stay! Leading the scoring with 4'l points, Stone outclassed the Warriors - 64 to 6'I! Following the example set, Chicago Christian beat the Warriors 48 to 38. The Academy simply couldn't cope with such a tight defensive zone. Only 7 points, but that was more than enough . . . to lose again! Despite all their efforts against St. Procopius, the Warriors fell short by a 61 to 54 margin. Continuing to play commendable but unlucky ball, the Warriors faced North Park. For only a fleeting moment the game was almost theirs! Having fought hard all the way, it seemed only deserving to climax the evening with a thrilling victory. Instead, North Park squeezed them out - 59 to 58! Having absorbed five consecutive de feats the Maroon and White determined to beat Elmwood Park Again they 'Fought bravely but the failure to cop italuze on several breaks handed them another disheartening loss of 47 to 45' Perhaps the Warriors were lust as surprised as University High when they snapped their long losing streak by post ing a victory of 57 to 44' Chrouser and Hare fired in 'Il points each to spark Wheaton to victory It was refreshing to change the routine' Dlgnlfled and cold Luther North smothered any hugh hopes that the War rlors might have had' Still unbeaten in basketball competition they had no in tentuons of losing to the Academy Thus once again the Warriors fell 48 to 56 Much apprehension marked the calm before the Warriors again met IC Both provement' But underneath the lights It was IC that controlled the dribbling and backboards Leading 20 to 'll after the first quarter they continued on un molested to win by a score of 66 to 38' Slaughterlng their next opponent ll Ivana Christian 71 to 48 the Warriors began to show signs of life' With high hopes the bug five faced Fenton in a firey hot game' Both teams experienced dramatic moments' But Fenton applying adequate pressure while retaining her lead went on to win 61 to 54' With good form Faulkner lumps and fires for 2 more paints' From left to nght VanEngen Faulkner Mohr Hare Bosgraf Sullivan Coach Pooley Chrouser Regler McKellin Rockness Thompson Supp and Harris I . . . . There's no one else to blame but yourself! Because wrestling is such a rugged, individual sport, only the most determined try out! Coach Harris begins work immediately! Practise becomes an agoniz- ing experience of being smeared over the mat face- down or tied in such tight knots that breathing seems almost impossible! Yes, and then after each work out , every muscle cries out with pain! Still legs walk mechanically but those who participate seldom com- plain! They love it! This year the wrestling squad had a very success- ful season. Co-captains John Novak and Dave Skon- berg provided a strong backbone for the team. Even the greenhorns showed amazing progress! Plagued with numerous errors, discouraging batting slumps, and even a broken iaw, the Warriors experienced a difficult season. While losing 'll games and winning only 3, there were still a few happy moments. Two outs! Trailing Fenton 1 to 0 in the bottom of the first, Bosgraf walked. Crouching menacingly, Thompson waited and connected for a solid triple! Fenton, later breaking the tie, won 'I6 to 'l! Three big 'lst inning runs, but even that game ended in defeat! West Chicago romped for a 12 to 3 victory. Errors! Errors! Scoring 6 unearned runs in the 2nd inning, Lake Forest enioyed Wheaton's superb fielding! Slashing a tremendous homer, Thompson, backed by the entire team, squelched University High's final bid and pocketed a victory - 6 to 5! Biting the dust against North Park, 13 to 8, the Warriors' inability to prevent their foes from further scoring, cost them another loss! like a furious tornado, 14 overpowering runs flattened Latin! Arthur pitched the entire game and won - 14 to 4! Soaring still higher, the Warriors spotted their prey and pounced! Parker, fighting feebly, was no match, as Wheaton clubbed them 'll to 1! Ripping the air with a mighty swing, Thompson connects again! Fighting up to the last strike, Sherm even surprises the empty-handed catcher! WARRIORS LOOK TO THE FUTURE With a resounding crash, Wheaton fell! Scoring run after run, Chicago Christian took ad- vantage of the Warriors' silent bats and badly mangled them 'IO to 3! Still fighting gamely, the battle-scarred Warriors straightened painfully and collided with Luther North. Quickly the Lutherans scored 7 runs! Bucking back for 6 big counters in the 6th, Wheaton closed the yawning gap! Only a 7th inning double play handed them another defeat - 7 to 6! Frantically waving for help, the fast-sinking Wheatonites again swallowed bitter defeat! Walther Luther, coming from behind, scored 4 climaxing runs to put the game on ice - 7 to 4! Weary and discouraged, the Warriors fell heavily before powerful North Shore! Continuous pounding brought the winners 13 runs while Wheaton clutched helplessly to only l! Crack! Almost musically Wheaton's bats smacked the ball! Four lst inning walks backed by Tillman's double and Skonberg's single, scored 3 runs! But Glen Park, rallying with 4 of their own, blew out the faint flicker of hope - 8 to 4! Swirling mucky water closed over the Warriors proud heads! Playing shorthanded due to the Senior Sneak, the remaining players succumbed to Glenwood 5 to 2! A dreadful season . . . perhaps! But remember that every season can't always be successful! Still, hidden somewhere behind this year's discouraging record, there lies the seed that will soon blossom forth . . . victorious!
