care of by Dr . Mannz . Wheatfield ' s businesses a few years back were very plentiful . A hotel, bakery, two butcher shops, five miscellaneous stores, two hardware stores, Chevrolet and Ford dealers, a bank, a light plant, two lumber yards, and a chicken hatch- ery were among the businesses . A few of these have unfortunately disappeared from Wheatfield. Some still remain in a new and different form, such as the bank; and a few new businesses have been added, namely, restaurants and construction companies . The first school began in 1890. The first building was 28 feet by 60 feet and two stories high. In 1906, a two -story brick building with a basement replaced the frame building. In 1941, an addition of 28 feet by 36 feet of two -stories and basement was added at an expense of $5,246. Until the year 1931, the Wheat- field School belonged to the town of Wheatfield . 13

Would you believe that Main Street used to be a dirt road? But that didn ' t dampen the town ' s spirits. Wheatfield was a swinging town . We believed in the finest of culture, having two theaters and one opera house . Citizens also had the entertainment of a roller rink. The town was never behind in the med- ical profession for two of our citizens were doctors, Dr. Fyfe and Dr. Bucher. The dentistry of Wheatfield was taken 12
