wheatfield school --wheatfield, indiana- -volume 22 say about: academics 18 sports 32 activities 48 people 62 community 94 academics Wheatfield School began in 1890 with two teachers. In 1910, the high school was commissioned by the State Depart- ment of Public Instruction . The Com - mercial and Home Economics Depart- ments were added in 1934-35, and the following year the Agricultural Depart- ment was added . A little known fact is that the present bandroom was once a country school. The building was moved into town and was used as a fifth grade room for some time . When the war started, there were eleven high school teachers, but some left to fight in the war . The vice-president of our school board, Wesley Myers, taught seventh and eighth grade history and arithmetic from 1942 to 1946 . In 1946-47 an Adult Agriculture class was added and the next year a girl ' s physical education class was added. Until then the women teachers took turns teaching physical education . In 1949-50 something new was added to Wheatfield, as assistant principal . The elementary school was built in 1951-52. Grades one through four are now housed in this building. The mobile units were added in 1966-67 for grades five and six. A remedial reading course was added in 1967-68 and in 1969-70 remedial courses in English, math, science, and social studies were added. When the new school is built, it will have a language lab or learning lab which will enable the students to re- ceive individual help . sports Wheatfield football had its humble be- ginnings in 1939 when a six -man team took to the field as a change from fall softball. This change brought about a tradition of winning teams, starting the next year when they won the Kankakee Valley championship . The first cham - pionship was led by Coach MacOwan. Since then there have been several other coaches, hundreds of players, many victories, and in recent years, many heartbreaking losses. Each of these teams has left its mark on Wheatfield High School and a sense of pride which will be remembered long after the doors of Wheatfield are closed. Football is not the only area in which Wheatfield can take pride . Wheatfield ' s basketball teams have always shown ability, pride, sportsmanship, and a winning tradition in their years of exist- ence. In the ' 37 - ' 38 season, the Red Devils won 19 out of 20 games. In the ' 38 -’39 season the Red Devils won 13 out of their 19 games; but in the Kanka- kee Valley Tourney, Medaryville came out victorious. These are a few exam- ples of the fine teams always started by Wheatfield . In recent years the Red Devils have had sectional victories in the 50, ’65, and ' 67 seasons. The winning tradition set by these teams will always be remembered by every past and present student of Wheatfield. As Wheatfield High School comes to a close, we can look back and hope this tradition will be carried on into the new Kankakee Valley High School . activities The number of activities at Wheatfield High School has increased greatly over the years . Some of the activities that have been added in the last twenty years are Sunshine Society, National Honor Society, Pom Pom, and Art Club. A few activities were started long ago, discontinued, and then started again later, such as Girl ' s Athletic Associa- tion and Chorus . One of the few clubs that no longer exist at Wheatfield was the Boys ' Service Club. It was organ- ized in 1953 to promote civic improve- ment and good citizenship . Of course, all the fun activities after school could not have been held without the support of these organizations . These activities have mainly remained the same through the years. We still have hayrides, roller skating parties, once in a while an ice skating party . and dances. The type of dance at the dances and the type of music are the only things that have changed. The stu- dents have danced their way through the charleston, jitterbug, twist, swim, jerk, and so many others that you can ' t name them all . Wheatfield has given many plays through the years . The last Senior play to be given was CHARLEY ' S AUNT. This play is included in that long list of activities that we know you like so well, the money making projects . How could we ever forget the cake raffles, fish frys, and candy sales that have plagued the citizens of Wheatfield ever since the school began. 9 people The style of dress goes in circles within periods of about 20 years . A long time ago we saw the below ankle dress, the puffy sleeve, and the waist band, with a gathered skirt . Then there was the A- line dress, the mid -ankle length and the straight sleeve. Now we see the mini skirt, in A-line style or gathered, with the puffy sleeve or gathered sleeves . Shoes have gone from round toe, no toe, pointed toe, square toe, and back to the round toe . Male styles do not change so often, The men have gone from baggy, plain pants and buckled shoes to colored pants and tied shoes to wild colors and back to buckled shoes. Changes in the community went from picnics, square dances, and ice cream socials to parties and driving around town; but there are still most of the old activities that went on for years, like going to the show, borrowing water melons, and helping Halloween goblins. The biggest change is in the school house. It has gone from a one -room building, where students had to walk to school or ride the buggy and one teacher taught all 8 grades, to the future two- story building with a learning laboratory, recreation area, and several classrooms for each subject. There will be labs for students to use what they learn and tapes provided for foreign language classes. But the students in general do not change; the adults just forget what they were like when they were young! Would you believe that Main Street used to be a dirt road? But that didn ' t dampen the town ' s spirits. Wheatfield was a swinging town . We believed in the finest of culture, having two theaters and one opera house . Citizens also had the entertainment of a roller rink. The town was never behind in the med- ical profession for two of our citizens were doctors, Dr. Fyfe and Dr. Bucher. The dentistry of Wheatfield was taken 12 care of by Dr . Mannz . Wheatfield ' s businesses a few years back were very plentiful . A hotel, bakery, two butcher shops, five miscellaneous stores, two hardware stores, Chevrolet and Ford dealers, a bank, a light plant, two lumber yards, and a chicken hatch- ery were among the businesses . A few of these have unfortunately disappeared from Wheatfield. Some still remain in a new and different form, such as the bank; and a few new businesses have been added, namely, restaurants and construction companies . The first school began in 1890. The first building was 28 feet by 60 feet and two stories high. In 1906, a two -story brick building with a basement replaced the frame building. In 1941, an addition of 28 feet by 36 feet of two -stories and basement was added at an expense of $5,246. Until the year 1931, the Wheat- field School belonged to the town of Wheatfield . 13 homecoming Homecoming has been a small but im- portant part of Wheatfield High ' s history. Our first homecoming was held in 1960. Since then, however, Wheatfield students have become enthusiastic and willing to make their homecoming something to be remembered . The queens for the years 1960-1969 are as follows: 1960 - -Judy Norrick 1961 - -Joyce Noble 1962 - -Jo Ann Risner 1963 - -Diana Myers 1964- -Louise Wright 1965 - -Carol Stonebraker 1966 - -Nancy Hoffman 1967 - -Crystal Myers 1968 - -Vicki Theis 1969 - -Judy Duggleby The 1969-70 homecoming began with a pep session and parade of classes and their floats through the streets of Wheatfield on October 17. The Student Council awarded prizes of money to the classes with the best floats. Freshmen received third prize; Sophomores, sec- ond; and the Juniors and Seniors tied for first . At the half of the game between Wheat - field and Battleground, queen candidates and the classes ' floats appeared on the field. As a tribute to the past years, the former queens were there and pre- sented the candidates with gifts . Then the new 1969-70 homecoming queen was announced. Wheatfield ' s last homecom- ing queen was Judy Duggleby escorted by Doug Stonebraker . 16 graduation Two of the most important events to a Senior are the Prom and Commence- ment. The 1970 Junior-Senior Prom was held in Halleck Center on Saturday, May 2nd. The couples danced from 9 to 12. Fol- lowing the Prom was the Post-Prom, the show at the Palace Theater in Rens- selaer and breakfast at Rafferty ' s also in Rensselaer. It was an evening that will be remembered for a long time. The Class of 1970 feels that this year ' s Commencement is the most important in the history of Wheatfield High School. Not only because this is their last year, but also because it will be the last in the history of WHS. Many have been heard to mutter, I can’t wait till graduation. But now that the time is here, it’s changed to I hate to leave WHS. wiPiS 9Hy% tp 5 |fe m‘K ( 8!§ PK £ +■ ' ; . ‘f -fi ' tX-. ' - ' V.Vj? j. With students, teachers, parent problems plus the rising costs of just about every- thing. In an average year its no simple task. But the year 1970, posed even a larger share of problems. The new Kankakee Valley School was to become more than blue prints and was to slowly rise out of the cornfields. No longer could the administrators think only of the year 1970, for the worries of ' 71, ' 72, ' 73, loomed just off State Road 10. To break the monotony of text books stu- dents are offered classes of art, agri- culture, band, and physical education. Art and Band help to develope skills of students who have shown talent after classes in grade school. Agriculture provides boys with farm skills which can be helpful to them to- day and in later years. Physical Education helps students burn excess energy while having fun, too. They had a lot of talent on the team, but couldn ' t seem to get things together for all the games. This was a senior dominated team, which had pride and never gave up. The team was also helped by some talented underclassmen, and managed to come up with a 2- -4 season record. The players all wanted to make a good showing in the last year for a Wheat- field football team. The season started off for the team on August 15, with our first practice. The first real action came on August 29, with the Jamboree at North White. Although Wheatfield and DeMotte were on the losing end, Wheat - field got the only score; it came on a 33 yard pass play from Burton to Rob- bins. The Red Devils then traveled to South Bend, where they were beaten by a much stronger North Liberty team. The next game came out in favor of Wheatfield 10- -0 over Winamac. Fol- lowing the victory the team went into a three game losing streak. Those three games could have gone either way, but the breaks went to West Central, South Central, and Triton. The last week of practice everyone realized that we would have to put all our efforts into winning the last game in Wheatfield ' s history. It turned out real good for our coach, the team, and the school. Wheatfield pulled off an 8-- 0 victory over Battleground. Like Coach Jones said, Let’s go out in a blaze of glory. They are the backbone of our country. They never become famous, they never get their name in the paper. They work hard at their job. And when they die, they simply die. Their name will never be in a history book, no epitaph will ever be written. They die, they simply die. But occasionally a common man” will come along who through his own personality will change the lives of more common men. So that we all might not be satisfied with just second best. For 16 years Wheatfield has had such a common man . . . Coach . 39 last of the red devils We didn ' t have a winning basketball season this year, but we still had a lot to be proud of. The seasons opening loss against what was to become a once beaten Hebron outfit provided an unforeseeable in- sight on the season to come. The 1970 Red Devils played their best all around game of the season, beating one of the best Demotte teams in recent years 63--58, thus making the third straight year that Wheatfield has beaten De- motte. The rest of the year proved to be somewhat anticlimatical, but as comes every year, a new found fever came about with the last game against Kouts, and then again during the all new season , the sectional. Throughout the year the Sunshine Society proved to be one of the most helpful or- ganizations in the school. SSS started the year by sponsoring the Homecoming Dance and serving cocoa and donuts to the players after the game. In November, Sunshine sponsored a cake raffle. The proceeds from this went to the Ambulance Service, Indiana State School for the Deaf, and Jorden School. The Sunshiners worked extra hard to make this year ' s Christmas Dance, Christmas on a Carousel, something special. In February, they served breakfast to all students who had a B or better average for the first semester. Their project in March was the Ma, Pa, and Me Banquet. SSS ended the year with the Ideal Ladies Tea. At this time all Ideal Ladies found out who their Sunshine girl for the year had been. ROW 1: Mr. Foster, P. Foster, M. Kidd, Debbie Risner, R. SWEETHEART (far left) Carol Bierma becoming the 1970 Chapter Sweetheart, being crowned by the 1969 Sweet- heart, Debbie Risner. From the greenhand new comer, to the chapter farmer vet- eran, the agriculture building meant much more than it does to the average student. It is a place to call home, a place alive with activities; Turkey Shoots, Slave Auctions, Contests, Conventions, Camps, Color Guards, and Banquets. All these activities have passed by this year and in previous years. But most important, leaders in agricul- ture have also passed by. One of the few truly student lead organiza- tions in school. The Future Farmers of America have worked hard all year long to make their activities, just a little bit more special. band In the years past, Wheatfield has had some truly great bands --this year ' s was no exception. Usually large in size they participated in numerous activ- ities . This year ' s band, though smaller in comparison, practiced long and hard to add a special sparkle of pride to both football and basketball home games. The annual concert, plus district com- petition, provided highlights for the bandman ' s 1970 season. They received very little recognition during the year. But, they deserved the gratitude of the entire student body for their continued effort throughout the school year. POM-POM (upper left) ROW 1: D. Stalbaum, J. Lovely, D. Risner, V. Jefferson. But, as in years past, this group did one thing especially well. They cheered, and then, no matter what the score, they cheered more. As in all the other activ- ities, pride began to grow throughout the year, and the cheerblock was to be one of the finest examples of this new found pride . It was not for glory that a dedi- cated group of cheerleaders and officers lead the way to one of WHS ' s finest pep blocks ever. They sponsored a Thanks- giving program, a Christ- mas part, and an Easter program, plus several entertaining convocations . Meeting in a student study group, they were quick to bring up student griev- ances. It was a good feel- ing to have a truly rep- resentative student council for this last year. Some of the teachers thought that we were on different wave links, we even had our own language. Besides that we had a lot of problems, a strange disease struck the Seniors the first day of school, Senioritis. After twelve years, it became just a little harder to get out of bed. The fall was filled with field trips . . . usually either watermelon, or pumpkin . . . occasionally one cleared through the office. There was the not so famous Christmas tree cutting incident, in which three seniors devoted their first period study hall for the sole purpose of cutting a crooked tree. The Senior play provided untold amusement to everyone but our sponsor who was for- tunate enough not to be invited to the party afterwards. The senior float pro- vided an exhausting week of hilarity and work! It was marked only by the irony of costing $30. 00 while we only got $25. 00 for first prize. There was also a serious side of the seniors. The worry after the second semester over whether or not we had enough credits to graduate. The dedica- tion of the Senior athletes, cheerleaders . . . FFA, SSS, NHS, Intramural, Echo, Arcus, Pep Club, Art Club, offi- cers and members . . . who worked hard to make the 1970 year a reward- ing and memorable one. DENNIS L. If he pays you wages that supply your bread and but- ter, work for him; speak well of him; stand by him and stand by the insti- tution he represents. If put to a pinch, an ounce of loyalty is worth a pound of cleverness. If you must villify, con- demn, and eternally disparage, why, resign your position, and when you are outside, damn to your heart ' s content. But as long as you are a part of the institution, do not condemn it. Could have well been the motto of the 1970 yearbook staff. Never before had Wheatfield ever pub- lished as large a yearbook. History was to be the key feature but color for the first time brought an added touch of realism to the ' 70 yearbook. Interest in the community ran high as more ads and more books were sold than ever before. We had hoped that this book would fitting tell the story of the end of a great school. And we be- lieve it has done both. I would like to personally thank all the Seniors who sold yearbooks, and ads. But especially the people who devoted their study halls to the yearbook. Some of these people never even got their picture on the Arcus page, but without their efforts the 1970 yearbook would not have been possible. I would also like to thank Mr. Koenig who earned about 3 an hour for his work on the 1970 yearbook. If we dedicated the yearbook to anyone Mr. Koenig would be most deserving. I hope that the students, past and pres- ent, receive enjoyment and memories from the 1970 ARCUS. EDITOR 124
