Pride need not be for only the shining and new, but also for the old and true. ARCUS ' 69 reflects a proud spirit for a year of hard work, anxious mo- ments, exciting rendezvous, spirited activities, disappointing losses, and large accomplishments. spirited parties and projects reflect pride in life School activities reflect a spirit of excitement and turn a dull day into a camelot of expectance. Becoming involved in these par- ties, dances, and projects means becoming involved with the school, community, and others. Activities turn the school into a kaleidoscope of colors ... of experiences ... of moods. Pride in these small but spirited events are infectious to other greater things to follow . homecoming combines the proud spirit of the past with the present An inspiring pep session began Whe at- field ' s 1968 Homecoming. Next was a parade through town which ended on the football field for a final pep rally. The students then went home to anxiously await the night ' s game. During halftime of the game Vicki Theis, senior, was crowned Homecoming Queen. Her court was formed by Judi Bierma, junior; Vicki Cortex, sopho- more; and Sharon Davis, freshman. Following the game, cocoa and donuts were served to the football players of both team s by the S . S . S . To end the day’s events the annual Homecoming Dance, sponsored by the Junior Class, was held in the gym. The band providing the music was The Us. 8 the catalyst for a proud spirit is sports Sports events captivate the students. A game won or lost ... an early rise to daily practice ... a goal in sight but never held. Wheatfield High School is sports. It breathes, sleeps and eats, with the ever present pounding of athletic intrigue. The catalyst for a proud spirit is the excitement and roar of a capacity crowd in the little pink gymnasium . Here the Red Devils find their pride . . . even after denying it existed at all. academic guidance and future planning keep administrators busy School administrators planned ahead. The new Kankakee Valley School made significant progress toward becoming a reality. A large work load was placed on the shoulders of the superintendent and assistant in providing for a new high school to unite DeMotte and Wheat - field in the near future. At the same time, the principal, with the adminis- trators, strove to ma intain the highest degree of academic progress with the old facilities . Not only does she work as typist and office secretary, but also as general bookkeeper and treasurer of the various school clubs and organizations . The guidance department strives to counsel and aid the students so that they might be better prepared for the future . Other duties of that depart- ment include administering certain tests and helping the student fill out applications . 12 Mr. Jones jokes with his world history soph- omores. Bill Pavot, Bonnie Miller, and Dennis Murray, all have roles. current events are stressed in social studies Current events gave the impetus to his- tory and government students for an understanding of their important roles in forming an American future. Learn- ing the difficulties of peoples in the past was provided through class role playing, in the form of trials, skits, and press conferences. In playing these roles, students soon found their problems of today similar to the problems of earlier peoples. In Latin I, noun and verb constructions proved important in forming Latin sentences and translating Latin to English . Much was taught about the early Roman culture. Latin II students con- structed projects concerning the buildings of Rome. A badly needed remedial reading program is in its second year at Wheatfield School. For the many students who have fallen be- hind in reading ability, it provided a chance to achieve in school work. We are proud of our many accomplishments in athletics, school activities, commu- nity affairs, and education. The senior play, class program, and our gradua- tion were but a few of the achievements that make us proud . But we have felt more than pride. We have experienced feelings of joy, relief, wonder, and sat- isfaction as we entered the final stage of our school life . May we be remem - bered not for our deeds, but for our spirit . the school year 1969 as we knew it. We were not satisfied with only the events of the year receiving full coverage, but we also felt a responsibility to show some of the spirit and emotion of the year . In accomplishing this enormous and sensitive task, as editor-in-chief, I would like to offer my thanks to the many people who contributed to making this story a success . My special thanks go to Baumer ' s Photography for their excellent cooperation and high quality work, and to our American Representa- tive Fred Plocher for many creative ideas . Most of all I would like to thank our ad- visor Mr. Koenig for the tremendous ef- fort and advice that has helped so much in making this story a reflection of Wheatfield ' s proud spirit . Tom Tanner
