WHEATFIELD ARCUS STAFF OF WHEATFIELD, INDIANA THE 1965-66 ARCUS KANKAKEE VALLEY SCHOOL CORPORATION Dedication The Arcus Staff is proud to dedicate the 1966 Arcus to the memory of Mr. John Hauser. The entire school and the community have suffered a great loss in the passing of Mr. Hauser. He was a true friend and a leader to those who knew him. The inspiration he gave us will live in our hearts forever. These have been the trial and error years--the formative years. Personalities have been molded, ideas conceived, failures overcome and future foun- dations laid. Time can fly with uncanny swiftness or grind with boring monotony. Twelve years seems like a long time--until it passes. It seems only yes- terday that we entered first grade, and now we are leaving forever. Lacy McCarty said ' To me, grad- uation means the coming of a challenge of life. Edna Bierma A successful future and a chance of getting places in life. Linda Mosher Getting out on my own. Our 1966 graduating class of 56 members filled roles of athletes, officers of clubs, artists, held jobs after school, attended activities. We were called a different class. Pensive Jon Glover Romeo Jon Sports contribute to the physical development of the individual. Green Risner stated in his Valedictory Sports of football and basketball, teach you the rules of the Game of Life. Football and its bruises and tackles teaches that cooperation is needed to get that touchdown; Basketball has fast action and quick-think- ing; Cross-Country develops stamina and endurance; Track is individual with determination and speed as aids. Freezing at those football games, melting at basketball games, yelling, screaming at track meets-- are all a part of the Merry-Go-Round of sports. To win with modesty and lose with dignity were the ideals we lived up to. Honor jackets are the rewards of countless hours of sweat, blood, toil and devotion. We lived up to the motto Good sports make sports good which Lana Meyers suggested at Sectional. A teacher affects Eternity- -there is no measure- ment of where the influence begins or stops. The staff at Wheatfield High epitomize a cooperative and helpful spirit. They spend time on preparation for classes, sponsor class dances and parties, clubs and trips. Ad- vice, guidance, study hall, tickets at games are all a part of their work. The school cooks spend many hours preparing hot and nutritious meals in the new cafeteria. Bus drivers at WHS have fine discipline which is felt in the classroom as the students are settled down upon arrival at school. They are careful drivers. The Secretary prepares the bulletin, works on the school records and attendance along with other duties. Omer, Myrtle and Warren keep the school clean. View of junk car Nick Becker drove in the Home- coming Parade. A parade through town, a rousing pep- session, crowning of the queen at half- time, and a Sock-Hop with a good band and the Sunshine Society serving cookies and cocoa to the football players are all a part of the final game. Three girls added color to the parade by riding horses: Linda Jefferson, Diane Parker and Marlene Benoit. They relax on the football field before going home. Homecoming — The Girl Of My Dreams” Queen Carol Stonebraker sparks the parade in the Sting Ray Corvette of Mike Kosta. Her escort is Bob Gourley, senior track star. Bob escorts Carol to platform for crown and roses. Drum Major Harry Tysen leads Sweetheart of Sigma Chi with band. Steve Deardorf escorts her carefully into the car. Night Of Nights- - The Prom At St. Joe College! Mr. Larry Rees, Junior class sponsor, and his wife, Sonja, helped make the prom a big success. Senior Play Mr. Herman Walden, director, helped make this one of the best plays produced. Good Night Ladies” - - November 5, 1966 CLASS COLORS GREEN AND WHITE CLASS MOTTO: Seniors CLASS FLOWER AMERICAN RED ROSE WE FINISH TO BEGIN The seniors chose class officers for the last time in Sep- tember ' 65; President - Mary Hendrix, Vice-President - Rich Tillema, Secretary - Janet Hoehn, Treasurer - Green Risner. Miss Kathryn Brown was sponsor, organized committees and we paid dues. Royal blue cap and gowns were chosen. We sold Arcus ads in September. Baumer of Kentland took our senior pictures and delivered them December 16. Carol Stonebraker reigned as Homecoming Queen. On November 5, we presented the Senior Play GOOD NIGHT LADIES. Herman Walden was the director. January 18, our name cards and graduation an- nouncements arrived. It was fun giving out cards. February 24- 25 we won our first game at the North White Sectional but lost the second, and the title we had, went to Frontier. March brought the arrival of our Senior Keys and lockets. Diane Halien was runner-up in the Heart Queen Contest. Seniors went all out mm ■■ for the Student Council TWIRP WEEK in all the glory of SLOPPY II Q DAY, SWEATSHIRT DAY and DRESS-UP DAY. It was a scream! 1 II The athletes received awards at the Athletic Banquet. Janet Hoehn and Sue Tillema got beautiful blankets for cheerleading. Mr. Sadler gave tests and had college literature sent to us. May 7, ■ ID the Prom was off-campus for the first time. It was at St. Joe I College and Calvin Bolen was chosen King and Janet Hoehn was ■ ■■ I Queen. May was our final month of formal class work. On May 13, our Senior Class program was presented before the school. The Senior Band played and the boys ' and girls ' chorus sang. Teachers gave awards and we received scholarships. Janet Hoehn gave the Salutatory address and Green Risner gave the Valedictory. We dedicated our Arcus to the memory of Mr. Jack Hauser and our Class Gift was a donation of $150. 00 to be used for outdoor bleachers. On May 12, the P. T. A. honored us at a lovely Senior Tea. The Wheatfield Alumni invited us to their dinner and dance on May 14. We were very nervous when May 15 arrived and we had to march into the gym for Baccalaureate. Commence- ment was May 16, and we found ourselves among flash pictures, movie cameras, gifts, diplomas, graduation parties--it made us all feel like movie stars. As we look back over the four years of high school, with its thoughts of classes, friend- ships, sports, dances, school activities, we find many fond and valuable mem- ories and Wheatfield High School will always hold a spe- cial place in our hearts. Advertising is the major source of income for the Arcus along with the sale of the yearbooks and a few sock-hops. Lacy McCarty was our Business-Manager and 146 books were sold. Roy Shepherd was top salesman and for selling over 50 copies, receives a free one. Ads ranged from $3. 00 to $20. 00 depending on the size. Arcus ads are a good investment because they are not discarded but looked over and over from year to year. We wish to express thanks to all who purchased ads and donated to our Booster page. Many expressed their congratulations to the class of ' 66. Special thanks to Arcus photographers: Mike Kosta, Richard Tillema, Larry Norwick, Betty Peterson, Ruth Salyer, Barb Nuss. Layout - Sandy Goetz, Diane Halien, Lacy McCarty, Mary Hendrix, Barb Neimic, Doug Bierma. To Edna Bierma and Carolyn Lapinski for reconstructing the ads and all others who helped we are indebted and say Thank You.
