1965 Arcus Wheat field High School Wheat field, Jndiana Published by the 1965 Arcus staff under the supervision of Mrs. Madylon Kosta Time is a sort of river of passing events, and strong is its current; no sooner is a thing brought to sight than it is swept by and another takes its place, and this too will be swept away Meditations IV, 43 Marcus Aurelius dedication To the 1965 Sectional Champs, the 1965 Arcus staff is very proud and pleased to dedicate it ' s yearbook. We of the Arcus Staff and ad- visors feel that our basketball team through their hard work and deter- mination have won the honor of having this Arcus dedicated to them. It is set up similar to the national government. Each high school class chooses two students, junior high, one student, to represent it in the Student Council. The class presidents are also on the Council. The Student Council represents the student body in the eyes of the Principal and faculty. If any student has a question about or sees a problem in school, he should feel free to present it to the Council. We will gladly help. That is one of our main purposes. Another activity of the Student Council is to try to make school more enjoyable for the students. One of our main activities is sponsor- ing the convocation programs during the school year. 13 National Honor Society ROW ONE: Mr. Herman Walden, Sponsor; Janet Hoehn, Janett Manns, Janice Alberding. THE NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY The National Honor Society is an organization which has high stand- ards. A Freshman is not permitted to become a permanent member, he or she is only a provisional member. Only juniors and seniors can hold office in this organization. Membership in the organization is based upon Scholarship, Service, Leadership, and Character. To qualify in Scholarship you must have a B- or above average. To qualify in Service and Leadership, the girls must belong to two organizations other than the N. H. S. The boys not taking part in athletics are required to belong to two organizations, except for sophomores who need only one. Finally, a committee of five teachers examines the character of those who qualify for member- ship on the areas of Scholarship, Service, and Leadership. 15 9. 9. Among other things, members learn through active participation, how to conduct and take part in a public meeting; to speak in public; to finance themselves; to buy and sell cooperatively; to solve their own problems; and to assume civic responsibility. The FUTURE FARMERS OF AMERICA organization is built, includes leadership, and character development, sportsmanship, cooperation, service, thrift, scholarship, improved agriculture, organized recrea- tion, citizenship, and patriotism. 16 WHEATFIEL.I1 - 7. 7. Class Mistory of 1965 Our formal education started as we left our sheltered homes for the first grade of school in 1953-54, with Miss Gladys Holle as our teacher. Twenty-seven of us enjoyed the ABC ' s. In 1955, Miss Gertrude Misch was the teacher of 30 of our class in the second grade. Then, in 1956, Mrs. Helen Kirkland was our third grade teacher and we still had 30 in our class. Our fourth grade started in 1957, and we had Mrs. Betty Hoehn for a teacher. In 1958, Mr. Sam Miller was our fifth grade teacher. It was our first class in the big building. We had never had a man teacher before, but he was very nice. In 1959, Mrs. Mildred Woolever was the teacher of our sixth grade class. We were thrilled to take our first class trip, which was a trip to the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago. In I960 we had quite a different experience as we merged with the High School classes. We were now in Junior High. Our home room was Room 21. Our spon- sor was Mr. Duane Bisher. We had two class parties. Class officers were Bob Myers, Fred Abbring, Wanda Whited, Janet Strain, Helen Finney, and Kathy Pavot. Janet Strain was our cheerleader. 1961, eighth grade was an advance toward maturity. Our members numbered 31. Of the number, three were new comers. Larry Crawford, John Byra and Bob Eckert were the three. Officers were: President--Bob Myers; Vice Presi- dent--Roger Parker; Secretary-Treasurer- -Dusty Howard; Reporter- -Cecil Crownover; Student Council — Bob Eckert and Wanda Whited. 1962, the swelling of our class to the large number of 54 in our Freshman year was due to entrants from Kniman, Newland, Gilliam DeMotte Christian, and Tefft. Our sponsors were Mr. Kent Demmary and Mrs. Doris Myers. Class officers were: President- -Fred Abbing; Vice President- - Louise Wright; Secretary --Marcella Oliver; Treasurer- -Janice Alberding. 1963 found us as sophisticated Sophomores with Mr. Jack Helms as our sponsor. Class officers were; Pre sident- -Dusty Howard; Vice President- -Helen Finney; Sec- retary- Treasurer -- Wanda Whited; Student Council — Janet Strain and Paul Gielerak. Class sweaters were ordered of black with red and white trim. We also chose our class rings called The Twist . 1964 was our Junior year and the big thrill of the Prom was anticipated. The theme was Evening in Paris . The Junior play, No Boys Allowed , was presented under Mr. John Hauser ' s direction. An outstanding event was the presentation of an operatta The Music Man with singing star roles taken by Cecil Crownover and Janet Strain. The class officers were: Pre sident- - Roger Parker; Vice President-- Kathy Pavot; Secretary--Louise Wright; Treasurer- -Allen Martin; Student Council --Janett Manns.
