Here are some shots taken at a F. F. A. meeting. President, Harry Hoffman was in charge. Farm Safety Hinges on Safety Minded Farmers Controlling dangerous humans, not dangerous machines, is the most important factor in controlling farm accidents, says O. L. Hogsett, farm safety specialist at the University of Illinois. Although many farm safety experts stress the importance of increasing machinery safety, Hogsett contends that controlling misuse and abuse ot machinery is the most important. Nearly all arm accidents are caused by persons who either tolerate an existing hazard or do an un- safe act. Few, if any, accidents are caused by dangerous machinery. Education and legislation are the most important tools in reducing the accident rate, says Hogsett. People must learn that they govern their machinery. Farming has become the third most dangerous occupation in the nation. And, with greater mechan- ization, the per capita farm accident rate is increasing, adds the University of Illinois specialist. Fifty-six per cent of all accidents result from hurrying. Fatigue also causes a large percentage, al- t hough the actual amount cannot be measured. In Illinois, tractor and corn-picker accidents occur most often. The type of accidents varies from state to state, depending on the type of agriculture. Hogsett says, It ' s the nut that holds the steering wheel to the seat that causes farm machinery ac- cidents. ”
