1961 Arcus WHEATFIELD HIGH SCHOOL WHEATFIELD, INDIANA Published by the Arcus Staff of 1961 under the supervision of Mr. Longiny. The Senior class of 1961 wishes to thank everyone who helped with the publication and distribution of our Arcus. We have tried to compile some of the most interesting activities of our school year into a book which we sincerely hope you will enjoy. Now, as we go out into the world, we leave in this book some of the most treasured memories of our years spent at Wheatfield High School. Dedication We gladly dedicate the 1961 Arcus to our coach, Mr. Fred Jones, who has represented our school well and who has con- ducted the team in such a way that they, too, have become a fine representation of our school. Such a man will not easily be forgotten; his memory will remain with us long after our high school days have finished. Scenes From Our School A scene from the busy halls between classes. Some of the busy senior girls find a few free minutes during the day to discuss mutual problems. Some of the boys enjoying their noon meal in the school cafeteria. their assignments. Richard Caldanaro and Harry Hoffman prepare to do their typing assignment. Tomahawk These pictures show the presentation of the Tomahawk and a close up of it in the trophy case. Mr. Jones and Mr. Gwin are shown with the Tomahawk in the assembly where the presentation was made. The Tomahawk is taken by a school in the Kankakee Valley who is able to defeat, in basketball, the holder of it. We defeated DeMotte and took the Tomahawk on December 20, but lost it to Reming- ton in the final game of the K. V. T. on January 14. The winner of the K. V. T. wins the Tomahawk no matter who holds it at the beginning of the tourney. Arcus Row 1: Mr. Longiny, Advisor; Emily Green, Patty Hart, Marjorie Craig, Dolly Malone, Dorothy Wright, Darlene Frieden. Farm Safety Hinges on Safety Minded Farmers Controlling dangerous humans, not dangerous machines, is the most important factor in controlling farm accidents, says O. L. Hogsett, farm safety specialist at the University of Illinois. Although many farm safety experts stress the importance of increasing machinery safety, Hogsett contends that controlling misuse and abuse ot machinery is the most important. Nearly all arm accidents are caused by persons who either tolerate an existing hazard or do an un- safe act. Few, if any, accidents are caused by dangerous machinery. Education and legislation are the most important tools in reducing the accident rate, says Hogsett. People must learn that they govern their machinery. Farming has become the third most dangerous occupation in the nation. And, with greater mechan- ization, the per capita farm accident rate is increasing, adds the University of Illinois specialist. Fifty-six per cent of all accidents result from hurrying. Fatigue also causes a large percentage, al- t hough the actual amount cannot be measured. In Illinois, tractor and corn-picker accidents occur most often. The type of accidents varies from state to state, depending on the type of agriculture. Hogsett says, It ' s the nut that holds the steering wheel to the seat that causes farm machinery ac- cidents. ” Homecoming Queen The Senior candidate, Miss Judy Norrick arriving on the field, later to be crowned Homecoming Queen of 1961. Many of you, who are eager to meet the challenges of this modern society, undoubtedly real- ize the meaning of school tradition for the present and future. Many of you have demonstrated on occasion an interest in developing a school where stu- dents and teachers work together to learn ways of democracy. My part in this effort has given me pleasure and satisfaction, and I hope that is has been profitable and pleasant to you. Mr. Gwin Mr. William Saddler; B. S. , Carnegie Tech, M. Student Council Arcus Class Prophecy It is 1971 now. Ten years have gone by since the graduation of the class of 1961. Our crystal ball tells us many things. We learn from it that Vern Sampson is designing racing cars for General Motors. Larry Hetrick, who is a barber in Hollywood, should team up with Richard Caldanaro, who owns and operates one of the most popular hair styling shops for men. Zoooommmmm! ! ! ! ! No. you aren ' t hearing things, that was John Cambe, Indiana State Trooper, after a speeding get-a-way car. Walt Mathis still has a yen for recreation. He is the owner of the pool room in Kersey. Bob Mathis has settled down and became the owner and manager of the Mathis Trucking Firm. The crystal ball tells us that Gene IJamstra ' s dream has come true, he is now the owner of a 1500 acre farm near DeMotte. Bill Gielerak’s long years of hard work are now paying off. He is a well-known physicist in one of the leading universities. Here ' s a crystal ball first.... Frank Martin has just won the Indianapolis 500 in record time. Marvin Fase, a true patriot, is now serving his country at a station in Japan. Dale Risner has become an All-American football player at Purdue. Gary Michael is now a car dealer in Chicago with A. C. Collins as his head salesman. Tom Cavinder is a construction engineer and planning to build the tallest build- ing in the world. Neil Myers, ever loyal to his country, is now serving as an Army General in Germany. Harry Hoffman has chosen the profession to match his great height and love of the outdoors. He is the owner of the largest cattle ranch in Texas. A1 Nelson is now happily married to his high school sweetheart, Betsy McIntosh, and they ' re spending a second honeymoon in Hawaii. Judy Norrick is running a nursery home for Darlene Fried- en, who is married to James Biddle and owns a ranch in Texas. We see that many of the female graduates are working now. Harriet Myers is a receptionist in Virginia for Capital Airlines. Susan Potts is working as a secretary in Amarillo, Texas. Mary Niemiec is working for a doctor in Chicago. Joan Mueller is a private secretary in Chicago. Emily Green is working as a secretary for Northway Products in Rensselaer.
