Farmer Fever- the spirit and pride that spread through Wheat Ridge High this year was a continuation of tradition set forth since l879 with the beginning of formal education at Wheat Ridge. This year a beautiful Indian summer helped to capture the nostalgic spirit and to heighten the congenial atmosphere during the fall. Major improvements were made to the front athletic fields by the addition of tennis courts. two multi-purpose fields, a baseball field, a soccer field, a softball field and dugouts. This generated a feeling that Wheat Ridge High is always on the move to better itself. This year's football season proved to be exciting and full of contagious Farmer Fever. The speculation of an undefeated season lasted until the last regular season game against the mighty Columbine Rebels. A trip to the state finals spurred the Farmer ambition to new heights. Steve Reaves awesome handspring captured many a goal throughout the soccer season. iPhoto courtesy of Charles E. Throughout the football season, the Wheat Ridge High Marching Band, Flag and Rifle Team spirit was evident in their excellent display of talent and color at each home game During the games they cheered on the Farmers with such tunes as the theme from Rocky , You Are My Only Sunshine , and the Farmers Fight Song. As the Band marched down the field during the halftime shows, each beat of the drum and clap of the cymbals displayed the ultimate Farmer Feverl Cheerleaders and Pom Pons incited an old tradition this year, the Farmer Spirit Trophy. This is awarded at the end of the year to the class which has been the most spirited. Pep rallys soon became highly competitive as each class vehemently joined in on all the fun and yelling. The hours of dedication and practice spent in overcoming the Shakespearean English and in developing the characters made the play a success. With the passing of the first anniversary of the Iranian hostage crisis and this being an election year, national spirit prompted many of the eligible seniors to vote. not only on Presidential and State Congressional candidates, but on statewide issues as Independent banking, a Light rail system and Open space. Mass participation was the key to the successful week. On Monday morning hundreds of cowboys and cowgirls were corralled into school to set the week off to a great start. Nearly everyone was dressed in their favorite Western garb from cowboy hats and boots to plaid shirts with pearl snaps. Then at lunch all were rounded up to test their skill in the balloon shaving contest. Tuesday was Sports day and Farmers could be seen dressed out in everything from shoulder pads to roller skates. During lunch the egg dropping contest lured many to prove their bravery and trust in their teammates aim. Wednesday was T-shirt and hat day and everyone was encouraged to wear their old favorites. lf anyone was hungry they could join in the messy but delicious pie eating contest. Homecoming I33 Time-Out For Powderpuff Football With all the excitement of Homecoming activities Powderpuff football often gets overlooked. Not this yearl The competition proved stiff indeed as four teams of about twenty girls each battled for the championship position. Many of the girls were seen limping through the halls at school during the two week period of after school practices. The four teams practiced long and hard, and despite a few bruised arms and chipped fingernails the teams were ready to go when homecoming week finally arrived. The first match-up for the four teams proved to be not only exciting but exhausting for all of J,- - 1 L... the teams. Many spectators were on hand to watch the next big game as the Split Ends defeated the Awesomes 34-O and the Iron City Phillies beat the Mutilators 6-O. The powderbowl game promised to be exciting as the Split Ends with a record of 3-O were challenged by the Phillies, who held a record of 2-I. Composed of dedicated and talented musicians who have worked hard at perfecting the playing of their instruments. the Symphony Winds is di- rected by Mr. Wallace and Mr. McGee. On December I6, I98O, The Symphony Winds played The I8I2 Overture to a cheering audience. The production of this number included many special ef- fects: singing by the members of the band. shotguns backstage, and a film to go along with the song. It was a perfor- mance long to be remembered. Many of the members of Symphony Winds made All-State Orchestra and All-State Band this year. Though both programs are different. each is held to give the students an opportunity to learn more about the way in which the government is run. Each person held a particular position in order to maintain the working of the government. Elections were held for these various positions, and then bills were introduced and considered by the committees and both houses. Girls' and Boys' State proved to be a fun week for all involved as well as a very beneficial and worthwhile experience. Civitan ,.i.'l.5'i A L fi IJ -.1 .w f sy V.. Youth In Government l73 Rocky Mountain Retreat! up! all The last weekend in March 36 people, faculty and stu- dents, participated in an all-school retreat. No, these people were not a select group of students. Every person went of his own ac- cord. What the retreat ob- jective called for was some- one wanting to help single out some main problems of Wheat Ridge High and then to follow up by determining and carrying out some long- and short-range goals. The retreat began at the YMCA in Estes Park Ca la snowlj with a few icebreak- er games. Henry Roberts of Jefferson County Schools was the guest speaker for the day. His talk dealt with goal-setting and how to develop and main- tain motivation among a large group of people such as at Wheat Ridge High. Cooperation games and discussion groups brought three goals into perspec- tive: school involvement in spirit, relations of the senate to student body, and self-confidence and per- sonal awareness in each individual. While Todd Carroll at center fullback and Eric Koch in goal, were extremely reliable for the defense. lt was a total team effort that brought the boy's to an impressive 7-3-I season, finishing third in the county. The State title was the final step to a great season. At the state meet the Farmers ran into their old rivals. the Green Mountain Rams. In looking at the individual results of the l98O Boy's Tennis season it is apparent that Wheat Ridge has suppressed capabilities that might have surfaced, had the league not been so tough. Senior Phil Pittz, number one singles finished with a 3-8 record, Sophomore John Baer, number two singles player, had an impressive 5-6 record, and Sophomore Mike Lowe, number three singles, also had a surprising 7-4 record. Seniors, Paul Jensen and John Persichitte, the number one doubles completed the season with a 2-9 record: Juniors, Bill Gustafson and Reito Rodriguez paired up to form the number two doubles team and finished with a 2-9 record also, Senior Art Garner and Junior Lloyd Johnson composed the number three doubles team having a 3-8 records and the number four doubles team was Seniors John Resler and Larry Abeyta who had a 5-6 final record. Mr. Headlee will not be coaching again next year due to other plans. Mr. Ron Dries, last year's girls' tennis coach, will take his place. The FBLA is a national organization designed to train the students of today into Business Leaders of Tomorrow. This year, the Wheat Ridge Chapter of FBLA started with a new advisor, Mrs. Bobbitt. and all new members except one. They began the year with a Fall Roundup . This was used primarily to get students interested in the organization and get better acquainted. The next proiects were fund raisers. They sold Jolly Rancher Candies, memo books, decorative bells as Christmas ornaments, and live holly. On January 30, l98l, eleven students and Mrs. Bobbitt went to Broomfield High School to compete at the District Conference. Lori Christner won the nomination of a state officer, Karla Allen took 2nd place in Data Processing, Rhonda Maggard won 2nd place in Business Math, Mike Hesse won 3rd place in General Business, and the Chapter Scrapebook placed 4th overall. These students plus Mrs. Bobbitt and two voting delegates went to Colorado Springs in March to compete at the State Conference. Traditionally, the Speech Team consists of 20-30 members who are involved in all forms of speech competition: debate, extemporaneous speaking, interpretations of humor, drama or poetry, duet acting and original oratory. By enrolling in Forensics l or ll, the students will receive the background information and training in their respective areas. However, any student may participate in the speech program as an extra-curricular activity. The speech season begins in September and ends with the state competition in spring. WRHS' team averages participation on IO- l5 speech tournaments yearly. Although it operates on a yearly budget of SISOO for entry fees and travel expenses, several fund raising projects are needed in order to support the program. Members of the Speech Team help to support the Forensic Program by having the following traditional fund-raising projects: November Thanksgiving Pie Sale. Carnation Vale-grams for VaIentine's Day, and the Sadie Hawkins Dance in May which is the maior event, as it usually involves a whole week of activities, ending with the dance. Team members are equally expected to participate in bake sales and other fund-raising projects. Speech Team 273 Although the Art Club had a slow start first semester, we have finally gotten a group together. Various activities include art displays throughout the school, trips to art museums. and a chance to meet new people. The Chess Club at Wheat Ridge is going strong this year, with games being played after school every night in Mr. Lohrentz's room. The memories of the past year printed on these pages are also printed in our hearts and minds. They are there for savoring. lt was a year of vast change, for the world, and our nation. lt was also a year of change for each of us. For the Sophomores it was a change from junior high to high school, and the opportunity to make many more friends. The Juniors had a chance to grow and develop their personal interests, perhaps even looking towards college and career choices. For Seniors this year brought the excitement of graduation. college choices, marriage, and the excitement of being on our own. lt also brought the sadness and reality of moving away and leaving the familiar surroundings and friends that we had grown up with over the past thirteen years. These memories are for keeping. FARMER FEVER - KEEP lTll ,XWQMMMKFX 01 Wjffpwwwgioiww 0?
