Among their laurels was the second- best qualifying score for the State Tournament at Greeley. Farmer golfers won the District Tournament with an astounding 304 total. Bob Livonius paced the District and State qualifiers with an even par 70. Upon arriving in Greeley, the team found itself rated as one of the Tournament favorites, but the cup grew smaller as the tension grew worse, and the Farmers did not show. Putts didn't drop for anyone, but med- alist Bob Livonius shot a T58 total forthe 36 holes to top off a year of great performances. Members of the team who represented WRHS at the State Tour- nament were Captain Dave Davis, medalist Bob Livonius, outstanding sophomore Dick Smith and Ju- nior Mark Lutz. Highlights of the T966 Golf season include the match in which Bob Livonius shot the lowest score ever at WRHS and the seventh straight County Championship in a row for the Farmers. by Dave Davis gf, afiiil L -Qi' 1 .1 , 4 Xa ,jLe,LU?4, X .4 , , -V: 1x 5 , N Q - w.,,,wffgkg,, , 1, A vw: a mt nn, Dave Davis Captain Jim Milam 'fl 2' 1 '3 P X' 5,k9 ' Dick Smiih Mark Lutz tha Farmer's Day : 3 I A I I These Farmers drive to School in Style 1. By winning the league trophy, the team went to the state tournament. To raise school spirit, all Farmers dressed up one day in order to show their apprecia- tion for the team. Farmers' Day followed with everyone donning their farmer clothes. Wheat Ridge defeated Boulder High by a score of 68 to 60 and moved into the semi-finals against Manual-the number one ranked team in the state. A fourth quarter rally by Manual pushed them over the Farmers and they won 77 to 65. The Farmers' basket- ball team then went on to beat Greeley Central by a score of 76 to 66 to capture third in the state. Certainly a iob well done! This year's hoot was extremely successful as there were many varied types of groups for the large crowd on hand. Farmers were thrilled by folk music, that expressed the cruelty ot the mod- ernday-world, nonsensical sing-along numbers, and rock-and-roll. The mood was changed sever- al times throughout the night from the sadder end of the scale to a more delightful and humorous pace by our answer to the Smothers Brothers. ..,. f 7-1513 .,, T , The Action Brass SPANISH PLAY EN LA ARDIENTE OSCURIDAD This bilingual production of Don Antonio Buero Valleio's En La Ardiente Oscuridad or In The Burning Darkness presented by the Spanish V class ot Wheat Ridge was a great success. Coach Blair Work's 1965 Football team, hampered by a lack of ex- perience, finished the season with an 8-2 won-lost record. Included in these games were a 7-6 victory over State champions Pueblo Central and a 25-7 win over Arvada, the first such triumph in seven years. Superior leadership on the part of the senior members, positive at- titude, and genuine determination were all traits contributing to the success of the spirited Farmer squad. Working as a team rather than a group of individuals, the Farmers produced a defense that was rated as one of the best in the State, allowing only one team to score more than one touchdown against them, and an offense that grew progressively stronger throughout the season. Both the Junior Varsity and Sophomore teams seemed to be plagued by a lack of experience. The determined Junior Varsity ended the season with a 3-4 won-lost record, while the Sophomore squad boasted a 5-2 record. by Tom Brown, Bob Mitchell, 8. The Farmer thinclads, show- ing consistent strength and excellent depth all year, rounded out an 8-O won-lost record by clinching the Jefferson County Cross Country League Champion- ship meet at Berkeley Park and finishing sixth in the State meet at Boulder. Bob Bigum's 7:31 was the best time set on the new course at Berkeley Park. Out- standin.g performers on the A squad were: Seniors, Bob Haefliger and LeRoy Knopfle, Juniors, Bob Bigum and Kent Ingram, and Sophomore, Ron Martinez. The WRHS B and C squads also swept the League Championship with the C squad capturing the first ten places. The two doubles teams of Rich Matteson and Bob Benik, No. l team, and John Leslie and Kerry Hada, No. 2 team, won seven matches in League play. ln District IV competition, the team cap- tured two second places. However, because of high team spirit, hard work, and above all great teamwork, the squad went on to cap a tremendous season record. Highlighting the second half of League play was the spectacular win over Alameda. The play, involving a college basketball player who is bribed to throw the key game, is a delightful satire on college presidents, coaches, and profes- sors. It was first presented on Broadway in 1959 where it enioyed a successful run before being pro- duced in the movies. Student director was Rick Sewell, who played Becket in the school's December production. Romantic leads were played by Bini Droll and Bill Kittle. The two pro- fessors were Dan Partner and Peter Young, and Anne Gross played the professor's wife. Eleven-year- old Chuck Counce, a pupil at nearby Slater Elemen- tary School, was borrowed for the role of the pro- fessor's son, a product of modern child psychology. There was a supporting cast of 45. Musical director was Caroline Ibbison. Debbie Smith was head choreographer. Mrs. McKinney was the dance sponsor. These three girls wrote letters to the American Legion Post in Arvada, explaining why they wanted to go to Girls' State and why it was im- portant to them to learn about our state government. Girls' State was held from June T6-June 22, on the Colorado Women's College campus. The girls lived in dormi- tories, where they set up cities, and elected officials to the state. After the session each girl is asked to make a report to her sponsor, and to the legion post that sponsored her. Kay was sponsored by the Wheat Ridge High PTA., Kathy by the Stu- dent Senate, and Honey by the Wilmore Richter American Legion Post. BCNWS STATE Boys' State is a week long study of de- mocracy sponsored bythe American Le- gion. It is designed to familiarize the boys with the role of leadership and govern- ment in our state. This year's Boys' State was held on the University of Colorado cam- pus, from June T4-June 20. Cities, states, and counties were set up, and officials were elected. A highlight of the week was a trip to the State Capitol building, where the boys acted as Senators and Representa- tives. This year's Boys' Staters were Kurt Kuhl, Larry Campbell, Tony McDonald, and Paul Strickland. Kurt and Tony were spon- sored by the Wheat Ridge Lions Club, Paul by the Student Senate, and Larry by the Wheat Ridge PTA. These groups paid all expenses for the boys. Backing the cheerleaders and lettergirls, they not only added color to the games but inspired their athletes onto many victories. Their iob was to yell, and they cer- tainly fulfilled their responsibility. During football season, they suf- fered through rain sprinklings and approaching snowstorms to see their team fight down the field. When sports moved indoors for basketball, they steamed up the windows with excitement and joy. Although there were many com- plaints as to strict regulations and no halftime breaks, everyone in the spirited club seemed to comply and enjoy themselves. You make the touchdown, we'll make the noise. PEP ..-.-...-,.,.l.,-. For seniors, this year marks the end of three years of laughter, tears, happiness, and disappoint- ment, of poster parties, football games, dates, and pep rallies, of studying, learning, and test- ing. And this year marks the beginning ofa new life, mature, meaningful, and filled with mem- ories of WRHS. For juniors, this year has whetted the appetite for the coming year as seniors, when new favor- ites will lead the school, new opinions will start trends. This year is a transition from the bottom to the top, from followers to followed. For sophomores, this year means relief from snub- bing and teasing, from being on the bottom, always last. This year of memories is the founda- tion for an eventful high school career. And for future Farmers, years of memories wait to be made, iust as each year waits to be lived, iust as this year has passed into memories. 230 AUTOGRAPHS AUTOGRAPHS In fi 3, ' wi: 1 Y gi E I nn.
