Minds filled with selfishness and prejudice are being used as annnunition. This war can be ended only by producing minds, cleansed of ill-will, suspicion, and bigotry, and alive with ideas of equality, liberty, and peace. These minds must be our minds. lVe should strive in our high school years to develop attitudes which will be capable of establishing and holding the coveted peace. Our school government is a basis by which we can learn to solve the complex problems which arise in the administration of a demo- cratic government. Our athletic program points out the road to an understanding and cooperation which must exist before a lasting peace can be constructed. In fact, participation i11 all school activities is a stepping-stone in our efforts to make this a better world. XVe have tried to capture between the covers of this annual evi- dences of our ability to work together, play together, win or lose to- gether, and an accurate account of steps We have climbed toward this goal. NVe trust that a few years from IIOW, all will look at this annual and recall the gains we made during the year of 1946-47 toward the peace which we strove to establish for all mankind. Senior Class The class of '47 has had one of the most successful high school careers of any class ever to graduate from W. H. S. When Freshmen, its members entered into high school wholeheartedly and gave the upperclassmen a tough time keeping them down. As Sophomores, the Class of '47 again showed the upperclassmen how to do things. An all-school party was sponsored which has never been equaled. Finally as upper class- men, the Class of '47 determined to set an example for the underclassmen. Selected as the Junior Class Play was, Everybody's Crazy, one of the best plays ever put on in the W. H. S. Auditorium. When May rolled around, a very successful Prom was given to the Seniors at the Lakewood Country Club. At last, members of the Class of '47 became mighty Seniors. Their duty was to lead the entire school through a success- ful year, which they did. More money was made on the concessions and auctions of the Farmer's Frolics than ever before. The Senior Play Out ofythe Frying Pan was highly successful. The class left the largest sum of money ever to be left for a class gift. On May 29th, graduation day arrived, bringing happy memories of four years at Wheat Ridge, but sadness at parting from old friends and scenes. Having shown outstanding leader- ship and school spirit in previous years, led by Don Drummond and Gene Ticknor, the class entered their Junior year by electing Lynn Fightmaster, president, Gene Tlcknor, vice president, and Ann Babbitt, secretary. Junior boys performed capably on both foot- ball and basketball games during the year. Placing first in the snapshot drive, they have backed all school activities one hundred per cent. The class presented a hilarious Junior Play, entitled, What a Llfe! , based on the life ot Henry Aldrich. They are looking for- ward to their last and most exciting year in school, their senior one. i r , 4 rio. . , FRANK ADAMS JOE AL.nNov1c1-1 BILL AVARA BETTY BAIRD NEVA BAIRD W w , . Let us look at their record thus far. As Freshmen footballers and basket- eers they didn't take any championships, but showed themselves to be good, clean players. They also presented a very good assembly, and proved eager, co-operative workers on concessions. During the sophomore year they proceeded further along these lines, work- ing with vigor in all school activities. Bob Sauer was chosen to lead, with Don Shirk to aid him, and Dorothy Johnson to keep the records. Sophomores even played first team basketball. An excellent assembly, full of laughter, with a Hollywoodian theme, showed real class spirit. In the two years ahead lie fun, work, and accomplishments. Exciting days were ahead, and all were determined to make the most of them. Joan Bickmore, Wally Stoll, and Bob Stokes were chosen to lead. Freshman football and basketball teams, coached by Mr. Fleenor, did well in competition with other schools of the league. An imitation of a Dr. I. Q. program served as a top- notch Freshman assembly program. Topping all other classes in the Community Chest drive showed that the Freshmen were strong contenders in any contest. Following the regular basketball season, interclass competition saw the Freshmen team soundly trounce the Seniors in the finals, to emerge school champions. High scholarship was maintained by class members, adding to the all-around ability of the class of 1950, which is determined to set a mark never equalled by any other class in Wheat Ridge history. This group has attained some outstanding acts in the educa- tional line as well as the humorous, to chalk up the score of well done. Those students who pass out little white slips that tell you what's wrong with your locker are members of the Citizenship Commission. QIt's funny, isn't it, that we always need someone to keep us on the right side at all times?l With the largest budget in the history of the school, the Finance Commission tackled both sides of the ledger with equal vigor, and carefully weighing the value to the school of all financial obligations, eiiiciently administered the funds of all school organizations. Clubs, School Spirit, Scholarship, Teacher's Hobbies, Commission government, and all school sports were subjects of all-school forums provided by the Forum Commission during the past school year. All subjects were capably handled by students participating in them. Anybody want an appointment for a. job to help your teacher, to work on the annual, or perhaps be a top reporter for the Farmer Highlights? Then look to your Social Service Commission, as they are the ones who assign such jobs to qualified applicants. Front Row: Mrs. Hedquist, M. Bergan, L. Decker, E. Pettlcrew, B. With only two weeks practice under its belts a hopeful Farmer eleven traveled to Westwood, October 9, to encounter the Bluejays i11 the first conference game of the season. The Farmers showed signs of great possibilities as they emerged with a 6-6 tie. The next game, October 17, was one with Golden in which Wheat Ridge out played the Demons in every department to emerge with a 12-0 victory. For our next game we drew Arvada. After playing them on even terms for the better part of the game the breaks went against the Farmers as the Redskins won 7-6. In the first game played on our home field the Lakewood Tigers, who went on to take the State Title, scored in the first and last min- utes of the game to win 12-0. Nov. 1 we were the guests of the West- minster Cardinals. After racking up 18 first downs to the Cardinals' 5, and rolling for 385 yards to Westminster's 75, we came out with only a 6-6 tie for the evening's work. In our next game we played host to Aurora. After three quarters of scoreless ball the Trojans rolled up a 14-0 win over the Farmers. In the last league game of the season, played Nov. 22, we played the highly touted Littleton Lions. Entering the game a. 12-18 point underdog, the Farmer gridders battered the Lions all over the field for a 7-0 victory, a fitting climax to a fairly successful season. Eighteen boys in all earned their letters, 14 Seniors and 4 Juniors. Two boys, Jim Clark and Bill De Temple, were placed on the All-Con- ference first team with two others, Rudy Kring and Bill Sauer making the second team. The Suburban League sehedule ealled for fourteen eonferenee games, with each team playing the seven opponents twiee. A praetit-P game with Ft. These two losses did not make the boys give up, but spurred them on to their first eonferenee win over Arvada, 31-28, tremendously pleasing the home erowd. An easy yietory over an impotent VVestwood team moved the Farmers to a .500 per- eentage. Further experience was gained in an almost win from a Brighton team, whit-h later went on to plaee in the state tourna- ment. Three days later, on the Golden eourt, the Farmers ' seemingly did everything wrong. and dropped one to the De- F lll0l'lS. Two old rivals took to the floor as VVheat Ridge and Lake- wood battled on the Farmer eourt. Following as exeiting a game as the speetators eould want, the Tigers went back to Lakewood on the short end of a 219 to 26 seore. Les Hartuug, Sr. First year letterman Meeting the undefeated Westminster Pardiuals in their own gym was no easy task, but the performances of the entire Guard Farmer team, before suet-umbing3-1 to 27, were highly ereclitable. The Littleton team was a power- ful one, with recent vietories over NYestmiuster. and Regis of the paro- ehial league. The speed and attaek of the Farmers kept them ahead through- out the game. Teamwork and ,good sportsmanship highlighted every game VVheat Ridge played. Good eoaehiug, speedy floor- work, aeeurate passing, and elean playing brought the Farmers' vietor- ies, and marked respeet for them even in defeat. The set-ond team showed plenty of promise in the weekly curtain-raisers to first team games. Stevens, D, Stoll. Mgr. I Q l Iron Stull was tht- iirst tilfllll lll?ll1Zlg't'l'. Coach Hoyt Brawner. The nlatmen ran into a little bad luck during the conference matches, but still finished a strong second, with Golden nailing down the top spot. In their first league match the grapplers took the measure of Littleton to the tune of a 35-15 scorer In the next three matches the Farmers defeated Lakewood, Arvada, and Westminster by scores of 53-3, 37-11, and 45-5 respectively. They also had a forfeit from Aurora, dropping only a close decision to Golden, 26-28. The team had a very successful season with Jim Clark and Don Couch making All-Confer- ence, and Don Oglesby taking second and Joe Crawford fourth in the state tourney. tw F' 2-.W N15 's is C' This was Mr. Harry Shade-'s first yr-ar coach- ing track at NYhn-at Ridge. As the Annual went to press the prosper-ts for a good team were bright. Les Hartung is a one year It-tts-rman and was at member uf the state train last ye-ar. He was all- state last year and is ex- pecte,-cl to hold his own again this year. Bill Mat-y is at junior and a. two yt-ar In-ttf-rman. Bill was a member of the 1945 state' tt-am and also last. yt-ar's state- team. Ht- has made all-4-tmft-rem-e two years and all-state two years. His spew-ialties are the dashes. Track Season of 1947 In a country where nature plays weather tricks on would-be sports enthusiasts, track teams must constantly brave the elements. In spite of often adverse weather, Wheat Ridge cinder n1en of 1946 compiled an excellent record by running second in the Arvada Relays, Den- ver University Relays, Suburban League, and District meets, and then performing brilliantly to take their fourth consecutive state class B track championship. In the D. U. Relays, Narcisian, by jumping 22' TIM , broke the relay record, and the 440 yard relay team sprinted to tie the previous mark for that event. Bill Macy, Les Hartung, and Bill Sauer are lettermen back for 1947 competition, which evidenced another good year for Wheat Ridge in track and field events. 'l' RAC K SQUAD Don Ottercrans is a one year letterman. He was also :L member of last year's state team and was all-state also. Don's fa- vorite is the half-mile. Tony Ruote is also 8. one year letterman. He was all-conference last year. His speed is ex- pet-ted to carry him through with flying colors this year. His specialty is the dashes. Bill Sauer is another one year letterman. His main events are the relays and the 440. Bill will be counted upon to help keep NVheat Ridge on top again this year. ,l1PlL'l1,.14:f::l- ll- ll.-nsull: I-I. Sauer: .l. Aljinuvirh: L. Hartumrg ll. Courh: ll, Kring: li.
