The Great White Watchern seems indeed to be a gigantic guar- dain of the destinies of this school whose year book bears its name. 9 d o o 1 W a y W e -M Apassed each day to happy hallways and busy classrooms. Thus may our Kulshan he an entrance to the garden spot of highschool memories. HROUGH this The Board of Education who plan for and watch over the welfare of our city schools: President Iddins, Secretary Pratt, Superintendent Wiedman, Cozier, McGlinn, Roberts, Van Buskirk. For more than eleven years Mr. D. E. Wiedman has served the schools of Bell- ingham efficiently and Well as superin- tendent. May this picture recall to you the real Whatcom-not a mere structure of bricks and mortar but a veritable house- hold of youthful life, in whose halls you have studied, laughed, worried, and en- joyed the company of school day chums. A storehouse of information when themes or reports are due-a pleasant place to pass leisure moments-the library. A real friend to the girls who work with her and an efficient manager of the library and of the girls' attendance roll, Miss Schumacher. Our principal, Mr. Wells, always working for the school, its student body and its ideals, is a man with a spirit of friendliness that awakens a like feeling among the faculty and the student body over whom he presides. A versatile person is Mr. Emery, for his work as vice-principal embraces sup- ervision of the book room, boys' attend- ance, and the teaching of English. He is also a comrade and adviser to the boys Hi-Y and Key Clubs. Along with all the duties of an office secretary, Mrs. Snow has willingly taken upon herself the task of being friend and confidant to every Whatcoinite. THE FACULTY 1- QQ. W M. Alvin A. XVhatcom graduates shake hands with the World and prepare themselves to meet it on an equal basis. No humilation, in the eyes of the old members, seemed to be too great for the incoming NV club members on initia- tion day. More than once have the janitors patiently left their duties to open the lockers of some unfortunate boy who has left his key at home. Under the expert coaching of Herlin Slocomb and Alvin Swede Anderson, the track squad won every meet participated in. Frank Horn was elected captain and proved his worth by winning first places in the high and low hurdles. Earl Fife used his speed in tl1e 100, 220, broadjump, and ran anchor on the relay. Many points were won by him. Whatcom took place in two tri-meets, the county and district. The first meet was with Anacortes and Mt. Baker. Whatcom won easily with 83 points. The second tri-meet was between Burlngton, Whatcom and Fairhaven. The result depended upon the relay which XVl12llCO1l1 won, giving her the meet by 3 points. By qualifying eleven men, Whatcom carried off the county meet. A total of 54 points were made to place Whatcom first. A win in the district track meet at Everett closed the track season. Men who received letters for participating in the meets are: Fife, Horn, Vanderboom, Hunt, Higgerson, Tisdel, Jones, Benedict, Houser, Luke, Kvam, Johnson, Goodman and Crane. BASEBALL With heavy hitting, good fielding and splendid pitching as material, Coach Bryan M. Lewis developed a team that proved a menace to any high school team. Fairhaven, Everett, Mt. Baker and Ferndale fell victims to the '33 baseball team. Frank Kearney, second base, was elected captain to start the year. Other veterans were Clifton, Jones, Hickok, Bundy, Johnson and Salisbury. With the addition of Arnold Myers, a two year letterman from Olympia, Luke, Baunach, Greenwalt, Croome, and Lord, the team was complete. Two games were arranged with the University of Washington Frosh team. Although both games were dropped by close scores, the team received the necessary experience needed to defeat high school teams. Whatcom took first place in the Northwest League standings by de- feating Fairhaven and Everett. The surprise of the season was the Campus Day game with Everett, with a score of 12 to 3. Heavy hitting by Clifton, Myers, Kearney, and Luke, along with superb pitching by Joe Salisbury, won the game for Whatcom. At the close of the season Coach Lewis presented letters to Kearney, Jones, Bundy, Hickok, Salisbury, Greenwalt, Myers, Luke, Johnson, Clifton, Baunach, Croome, and Lord. There is hardly a move in the batttle of life, which you are about to enter, in which the advice and help of a banking institution is not of inestimable value. If at first your income is limited, you can commence with a savings account. Form the habit of putting money away, at least a portion of your income each week or month. The growth of your account will be like that of a tree-you may not notice it from time to time, but one day you will exclaim with surprise at the amount is attained. A substantial bank account which spells independence, can be acquired on the installment plan, just as an automobile or other luxury, but with this difference, the bank adds to it in- terest instead of you having to pay out additional sums for interest and expenses. Also--You will always have a right to call on the time of the bankis officials for advice on the many matters in which they can counsel you. Yours for a successful career, H. P. J UKES, Cashier.
