'29 MUIR, Advisor LAUGHLIN, Advisor Senior Class Living up to their reputation ol' being the peppiest, snappiest, and most unusual class ever graduated from VVhatcom High School, the Seniors of '29 have made many landmarks in their career thru the four years ol' high school life. XVhen the mamas and papas, Your ycars ago, administered to innocent faces undue ablutions, and sent their Cherubs to school in their first long pants or brand new dresses, warning them against the dangers and pit-falls of a high school career, little did they suspect that here were the future leaders destined to make fame for their class and their school. ln athletics the class of '29 has set an unusually high standardg in scholarship they have likewise excelled. In school spirit and activities no class can compare with this one. Two ol' their late accomplishments have been starting the ball rolling towards a new gym and putting over the first Campus Day 111 twenty years of WVhatcom history. VVe believe in you, Seniors. This is the second time that this class has won old Meggie.', VVl1ttlC0lll genius along the line of dramatic art and athletics seemed to have found its origin in this lively group of Juniors, Also the decorating work ol' the .l unior coininittees at the time ol' the Senior Conxniencexnent, and liacealaureate services helped to make these occasions heauliful. ROBERTS, Advisor THOMAS, Advisor Sophomore Class Leaving behind the traditional timidity and inexperienee of the freshman year, the class of '31, reinforced by graduates of Roeder Junior High School, this year undertook its full share of school responsibilities. The football season found three sophomores, Helseth, Barn- hart, and VVinters, on the first team and several more on the second team. In basketball too, the class shone in furnishing three regulars, Barnhart, Bliss and Clendenen. The class was also well repre- sented 011 the second team. The sophomore basketball team made a splendid showing in the intramural league. Although the sophomores did not retain Old Meggiev for the second successive year, the class put forth every effort to win and helped in niany other ways to make the Not-A-Sho the success it was. With such an auspicious beginning there is no doubt but that ,31 will prove to be one of VVi1LliL'O1ll,S most valuable and alert Classes. In the lirst place a cat of his nervous temperament fouml il difiicult to accustom himself to the exciting life in a Doctor's home, and in the second place a cal of his lineage belonged in a lnansion or perhaps a royal court, however, if Eglyntine, the cat next door, who had even more hranches in her family trec than he had, could hear up in such a lowly surroundings, the least he could do would he to maintain a hold front. Nicodemus' every whim was granted through a very common hut effective method, that of nipping pcople's legsg hut no amount of nipping would prevent the family from nicknaming him Nick. To Nicodemus this seemed a sacrilegous practice, for was he not the namesake of a liihle character? Indeed he was, aml he staunchly refused to answer to such a vulgar name. VVhen Nick spied 'I'om on the porch one day, his tirst impulse was to uphold the honor of his ancestors aml cull' him upon the ear: hut upon closer scrutiny of the claws in 'l'om's forepaws he decided that the gentlclnanly thing lo do would he to avoid him aml go on ahoul his business. Tom had a past. One look at his mangy coat aml gaunt frame was proof ot' the life he had led. Ile had sluuk into alley-ways, prowled from garhage can to garhagc can, scutlled across traffic lilled streets and his tail was deformed from dragging cans, hottles, and miscellaneous articles which playful street urehins had tied to it. At last he wandered to Nicodemus, porch, where he decided to remain long enough to regain his health in peace, eating the morsels which Nick refused. It was thrilling, hlood curdling tales which Tom could tell of his adventures that fascinated Iiglyntine. She would sit beside him for hours with a dreamy look in her eyes, listening to stories of feline life in worlds unknown to her, while Nick looked on, sulfcring thc pangs of a truly jealous cat. In all his kittenhood days, Nick had held Iirst place in Iiglyn- tine's heart. He alone was allowed the privilege of sitting on the steps with her, whispering sweet whispers of love into her twitch- ing ear, and now as he approached cathood, he realized that his spot in Eglyntine's heart was rapidly heing eclipsed hy an entirely new spot, a spot of affection for the veteran Tom. Tom certainly knew his catnip! The sorrow of his lost love hegan to cll'ect Nicodemus in various ways. His tail was lowered to halt' mast and his heart Seventy-six 1-H-W-gg-M-me-tQULstifiiNe-A-9-e-W-: thumped painfully against his slightly prominent ribs. Once he even thought ot' the pond but shuddered. No real cat would ever faee such a death. VVater -- ugh! Ut' course the catly thing for him to do would be to tight it out with 'l'omg however, he held the same respect for 'l'om's claws that he held for a vacuum cleaner and though he knew he wasn't a coward, he couldn't brace himsell' for pugilism. There was only one course ot' action lel't by which he could outwit Tom, and that was to prove to Eglyntine that Tom was not suited to herfffthat alley-cats are alley-cats and parlor-cats are parlor-eats and never the twain shall meet. So Nick set about developing an effective plan of procedure. tele decided that he would expose Tom's alley-cat manners hy accentuating his own well-bred manners. He watched 'l'om's movements, observing those which pleased liglyntine and those which displeased her. At every opportunity he emphasized 'l'om's faults hy displaying his newly developed traits of character. At times Nick became discouraged and gave himsell' up to genuine feline despai1',but each time the sight of Eglyntine and Tom together spurred him on and he doubled his ell'orts to regain his former place in l?glyntine's estimation. At last his patienee was rewarded. He peeked around the corner one morning just in time to see Eglyntine plant a well-aimed paw on Tom's erumpled ear. Nick supposed it was because Tom had d1'unk all the milk in Eglyn- Line's saucer. From this time on Tom grew steadily in Eglyntine's distavor. Eighty-two -2-enezieags-teULst+1.QtN:l-M?-i-R Cardinal tThird Prize Storyb XVho is the great man, and what is he going to do? asked a small boy of his mother. There was a note of awe and anxiety in his voice. For children, as well as grown people, in .laekson, are taught to show much reverence to iine arts. 'l'he beautiful cathedral was titled to the limit of its capacity. 'l'hrongs of people were standing within and without, tho inside there was no confusion. No matter what their discomforts, an awed silence prevailed over all the church. lt was a master pipe organist whom they were assembled to hear. lt was not long before the suspense was broken, for the great virtuoso soon appeared, making his way, with dignity, down the aisle, smiling and bowing his thanks to the thousands who applauded him. He was a kind, fatherly appearing old master. Like all wl1o arc truly accomplished, his attitude was a humble one. After expressing to them his soul's gratitude for the great blessing ot' being able to serve them in this way, he took his seat at the grand old organ. and at once began to favor them with a well known masterpiece played by many artists before him. But music never came so directly from a soul before. Now his tapering lingers fell limply upon the keys, and he played with a soft listless sleepiness which gradually grew in animation and life until at last, as if music had been pent up in his heart until it could no longer be contained, it burst forth with a mighty volume of triumph, rolling and swelling until every place in the vast cathedral was filled with its echoes. Then, like angry clouds, suddenly breaking away and revealing the clear, blue sky, and permitting the sun to bathe the earth, unharmed, with its soothing warmth and light, the music subsided into a sweet, melodious strain which could not be rivaled by any singing creature of the heavens. As the beloved master played on, it seemed as if 11ot a breath was breathed. Suddenly, as strains like the ripple of waters fell anew from his finger-tips, the fixed gaze of the audience was averted to a different direction. A bird had found its way in through an open window. lt lluttered wildly and blindly about the room, terrorized at linding itself in a place so strange to nature. At last, exhausted, it settled high above the audience. Suddenly it gave forth a series of quick ehirps in which could be descerned a note of relief. It had recognized S0lllCllllllg--W-S01ll6l.llillg which was very sweet and familiar. The bird no longer lamented its captiv- ity. XVilh shiny scarlet wings spread wide, it soared downward in the direction of the fatherly old master, circled three times Eighty-three KULsHaN above him, scrutinizing him the while to be sure it was making no mistake, and then without hesitation, took its place among the tall shoots of the ferns nearest the master's shoulder. During this llll1C the artist's attention was solely upon his music. He was now playing a melody in which could be heard the whispering of the trees and grasses, the ehirping of birds, the tumbling of playful brooklets. In it, one could feel and -e'e- yes nearly smell the fresh sweetness of spring. At this 1110I11Clll a rapturous song poured from the Cardinal's throat. It hopped gaily to and fro among the ferns, keeping time to its own little tune and the master's. A smile suggesting happy memories broke over the master's face. Eighty-four T?-+?e?xi'KULSHAN :lg- -we Sgnzbiosis tThird Prize Essayt All who have taken a course in biological science have been obliged to remember innumerable terms concerning plant and ani- mal life. Every printed page contains several of these teclmical words, some have a meaning for us, but more frequently we pass them over as just another term. ln a certain biology text a paragraph heading stated the follow- ing: UA Case of Mutual Aid: Symbiosisf' On reading further we lind as an illustration of symbiosis, a small animal, one of the species of Hydra. The inner portions of this Hydra consists of a number of one-celled plants living within the tissues of the animal itself. The minute plants assimilate the excretions of carbon diox- ide and nitrogenous food supplied by the animal tissues. In return the green plants manufacture carbohydrate food with which to l'eed its adherent. Thus the plant gets all the material for its food from the animal, and the animal receives carbohydrate food made by the plant from the animal's carbon dioxide excretion. Some students, looking at it from the biological viewpoint, perhaps may consider it just another term. Hut it seemingly has a deeper. l1lOt'6 practical lneaning. Ilere within a single animal we tind an illustration of the re- lation which exists between all animals and plants. ln our litera- ture we praise the work of Nature: all about us we perceive the beauty of natural life, and marvel at the faultless manner in which it maintains its life functions. Symbiosis is only one example of the ingenuity of Mother Nature. lf it so occurred that Nature found symbiosis a profitable and efficient form of enjoying life, would it not also be applicable to mankind? The form of human relationship nearest to symbiosis is co- operation. VVe often speak of co-operative marketing and co- operative dealing in many lines of business. liut this process is carried on more for the purpose of prolit. and it encourages a stain of greed and sellishnessg whereas Nature has omitted this element between the plant cells and the animal tissues of the Hydra. True or ideal co-operation is a product of love and is backed by a desire to observe the Golden Rule: it is a case of mutual aid , as is the process of symbiosis. Co-operation, like the airplane, is far from satisfactory perfection or universal adaption, especially between nations. So, as the Hydra enjoys life by natural symbiosis, so we may enjoy living in this world by developing the spirit of true co-operation or human symbiosis. PAUL NV11.1.1Ax1s. Under the wise counsel of Miss Dennis and the progressive atmosphere created by Mary McDonald, the club has steadily grown in importance and usefulness. Much appreciation is also due to the faculty women who have helped the committees. A valuable improvement was the trans- formation of the Visiting Committee into a Costume Committee. Two of the outstanding events ol' the club year were the Fashion Show and the Mothers' and Daughters' Tea. The Fashion Show, it was agreed, was one of the best ever given at xVl'l3tC01I1. For the first time in the history ol' the club, the Girls' Club Council became a democratic institution and a business-like body. ln view of these facts, the students have good cause to be proud of the Girls, Club. There is hardly a move in the battle of life, which you are about to enter, in which the advice and help of a banking institu- tion is not of inestimable value. If at iirst your income is limited, you can commence with a savings account. Form the habit of putting money away, at least a portion of your income each week or month. The growth of, your account will be like that of a tree-you may not notice it from time to time, but one day you will exclaim with suprise at the amount it has attained. A substantial bank account which spells independence, can be acquired on the installment plan, just as an automo- bile or other luxury, but with this difference, the bank adds to it interest instead of your having to pay out additional sums for interest and expenses. Also-you will always have a right to call on the time of the bank's oflicials for advice on the many matters in which they can counsel you. Yours for a successful career, H. P. JUKES, Cashier.
