H THE EAGER MISS BEAVER Mrs Gazelle Upshaw, snobbish widow, moved with her son Harlan and daughter Doreen, into an old mansion to be near the rich widower Beasley Scudder and the aristocratic Ver- bena VanWyck and her brother Dicky. Gazelle plans to capture Beasley and marry Doreen off to young Van Wyck. She invites Bernice lBunnyJ Beaver, a distant young cousin, to come live with them. Bunny, reared on a Kansas farm, has inherited a small fortune and Gazelle orders Harlan to marry her. Harlan declared he'd rather die than marry that Kansas Jay-hawker from the sticks. Bunny, a pretty young girl ar- rives, disguised as an uncouth country jake, telling them she is eager to git herself a city fel1er. CAST: Gazelle Upshaw .... They were welcomed by their first grade teacher, Mrs Velma Silk. Out of the original twenty-five, seven remain to claim vic- tory with diploma in hand. They are: Helen Graham, Rita Nilles, Tommy Grudgings, Jerry Smith, Karen Kitzman, Bobby Coghlan, and Jimmy Van Patten. Entering the second grade, Mrs Edna Fabrlltz greeted us. We also met several new students, Mickey Doty, Dennis Johnson, Roberta Wilson, and Clara Colbert. The girls were with us through the eighth grade graduation. In the third grade we discovered Miss Rudd as teacher and our future basketball star, Dottie Coulter. Entering the fourth grade were the same shining faces. The only difference was our teacher, Miss Betty Sprague. This grade holds memories of the pet hamsters and ringing the school bell. The fifth grade brought the climb to the high school building where we found a new teacher, Mrs Seitsinger and another basketball star, Marfie Ladely. We also found a rather shy boy, Robert Ward. In the sixth grade we had Mrs Don Lewis, the former Miss McKay, for a teacher. We can remember her giving treats to those who re- ceived perfect in spelling for the six weeks. Also we gained a dark, handsome boy who was destined to be our homecoming king, Wayne Witt, and a likeable girl, Sandra Kitzman. In the seventh grade our teacher, Mrs Tinsley, helped us prepare our first banquet. New faces that year included Helen Ashby and Ted Snyder. Mickey Doty left us only to join us again in the Freshman year. Eighth grade brought Mr William Olson as teacher and sev- eral new students including Pat Thomas, David Draegert, and Karen Hamilton. The big events that year were our banquet and graduation. As we once again mounted the stairs to higher education we took our places as Fresh- men in the high school assembly. Among those initiated that year were several newcomers to the class. Mary Dawson and Roy Cadwell had moved to town while Bob Brackin and Farrell White were coming to school in town for their first time after getting their elementary edu- cation in country schools. Frank Moore moved from Montezuma to join us in our Sophomore year and became our junior class president. With our senior year many things happen- ed to make our lives more interesting as re- organization made many changes in our school activities. The assembly was cut in two with a par- tition to make a new classroom, more lockers were brought into the upper halls, and new teachers were added. One day we discovered the building filled with our northern neighbors, the Gibson high school. With the Gibson school came four addi- tions to our class: Virginia Krumm, Larry Mc- Kay, Elinor McCurdy, and Peggy Burggraaf. With the addition of these students our graduating class was completed. Senior Class Will Upon this solemn occasion we would like to read to you the will of the Senior Class of 1957. We the class of 1957, being of sound mind and body, do declare that this is our last will and testa- ment. To Mrs Mi11er's future Home Economics classes we leave our green pies, and our ability to change the subject from cooking to Pat Boone's latest re- cordings. To Mr York's future economics and government classes we leave his corny examples, and all of his various insults about women! To all students we leave Mr Smith's knowledge of EVERYTHING, and his knowledge of everyone's latest love affairs, and his .ability TO TELL THE STUDENT BODY ABOUT IT! To Mrs Osweiler's future bookkeeping and typ- ing classes we leave all her points off for this and that, and her grading on the curve--ONE wrong and 'it's a B! To Mrs Tinsley's future English lit. class- es we leave all our book reports, and her ability to see all, know all, but say nothing .... Also, her will- ingness to give up classes for senior play practice, and her ability to put on a play in TWO WEEKS! Mr Piper was a great 'athlete in all sports, and played the part of a colored boy in his senior class play. Remember that, all future classes. Because if you don't-he'll be sure to remind you at the ear- liest possible date. To Mr Miller's classes we leave our threatened daily trips to the sandpile, and all of his questions that he never answers. Also his ability to prove the rest of the world is wrong and HE is right. We LEAVE Mr Schilling and his favorite say- ing, Toot, toot, Kiddies, off to class. To all underclassmen we leave our carved-up and broken desks, unsigned admit slips, paper wads, and erasers, our battles with the teachers, and most of all, ALL THE TEACHERS, in the hope that you will survive as well as we did. Other than this, each of the Seniors has his own spec- ial gift to be left to a Junior: Ted Snyder wills his ability to drive C?D to Larry Hudson-who would undoubtedly be better off without it Jim Van Patten leaves -his steady trips to Gibson to David Ward, but offers a warning to Stay -away from a certain senior girl! Larry McKay wills his ability to never open a book, or attend classes, and yet pass C0 to Dude Henry-who is learning how very fast. Virginia Krumm wills her quiet ways and her back seat in the study hall to J one Stein. Rita Nilles wills her ability to get to school on time OJ to Rit-a McKay. Karen Kitzman wills her radiator knob to Larry Arendt-so he'll have a cool place to charm the girls of South High. Tom Grudgings wills his daily snacks at home to Dean Fry and his athletic ability to Robert Ward. David Draegert wills his studious ways and dislike for girls to Jerry Baker. Dot Coulter wills her famous hair-do's to Peggy Stout. Dennis Johnson wills his class ring to anyone who wants it for a week end! Marie Ladely wills her basketball ability to Verna Hampton. Helen Graham wills her personality to Loretta Syn- horst and her ability to speak, Latin to Carolyn Surber. Robert Brackin wills his towering height to Robert Ward and his quiet ways CPD to Roy Bergvik. Sandra Kitzman wills 'her rock but not her man to Sharon Fisher. Mary Dawson wills her ability at making cokes to Donna Tancer Cwith the hope that Frank likes cokesl. Peggy Burggraaf wills her flashing red hair and quiet disposition to Shirley Morrow. Karen Hamilton wills her long hair to Mama McKay. Mickey Doty wills his wavy hair and his shy C0 innocent OJ looks to Roy Bergvik. Wayne Witt leaves his free taxi service for all girls to any poor junior who is unlucky enough to get stuck with it, and his athletic ability to Larry Young. James and Joe McDonald leave their way of getting along so well together Cwhich is unusual for brothers? to David and Robert Ward. Elinor McCurdy leaves her blushing smile and Sun- day dinners at Gibson to Judy Hamilton-who can eat hers at Deep River. Jerry Smith wills his long eyelashes and his in- sulting remarks to Roberta Wagner. Franklin Moore leaves his noon-hour romances to Steve McKay, but says Steve must find his Own girl. Bob Coghlan leaves his girls-in-every-town to Loren Curry. Helen Ashby wills her winning ways with all the teachers to Rosemary Hamilton. Pat Thomas leaves her crown to next year's Home- coming queen and her mischievious CU ways to all juniors. Roy Cadwell leaves his drums to Dean Fry. THE SENIOR CLASS OF 1957 Senior Class Prophecy In 1967 three reporters from the 1957 Junior class were called to cover the story of the reunion of the 1957 Seniors of South High. The big occasion was held at Farrell White's fabulous million acre ranch in Death Valley, Calif. His ranch named the White's Whinney Acres is known far and wide for its purebred Shetland ponies. We found out that-several of the guests had to come from great distances. For example, Larry McKay now lives in Cuba and owns a chain of hotels there, strictly for women Knot under 16 and not over 213. Another re- quirement is that they must be single, but Larry still remains a confirmed bachelor. Elinor McCurdy traveled from Zama, Africa. Her hus- band is an engineer there and designs African -grass huts. By the way, their business is financed through an Iowa bank. A pink Cadillac convertible drove up. You'll never guess who got out-the first American governor of Hawaii-Bob Brackin. In fact he is a Republican governor and as a hobby fights Hereford bulls in Mexico. Next we heard a loud noise and crash. We looked around and were startled to see a Rocketship with none other than David Draegert at the helm. He has an enter- prising business carrying passengers from earth to moon and visa versa in his rocketship, called the Dippey Davey Doodle Bug. You would be surprised at the number of 1957 Seniors who couldn't bear to leave the vicinity of What Cheer and have settled down in that territory. Dottie Coulter is a girls' basketball coach at a newly organized school in Keokuk county, called Doodyville. Her husband is boys' coach in the same school. Roy Cadwell has become a well-known doctor. He is a bone specialist for bow-legged fleas and as a pas- time makes glasses for cross-eyed cooties. He attributes all his inspiration to his classes back at good old South High. Mary Dawson has made Clutter's Drug famous. She is making millions on her new discovery-how to make shakeless milk shakes. Her invention has been copy- righted and is used at all soda fountains. Marie Ladely lives on a farm with her husband. They specialize in raising cane-sugar cane. Then Jimmy and Virginia Van Patten, the former Virginia Krumm, drove up in the weirdest looking car we had ever seen. It had two wheels, one in front and one in back. We found out that Jimmy is the designer and got his inspiration drawing pictures during a study hall in South High and Virginia designs and sews the seat covers. While talking to Franklin Moore we learned he raises purebred alley cats. He has around 300 at this time and is qfuite busy training them for the stage. Sandra Kitzman lives on a farm too. She and her husband specialize in raising not cane but Leaping Lena Milk Cows. Saves opening and shutting the gates. They received their inspiration from the Milky Way sign in Oskaloosa during their courtship days. Many of the seniors of 1957 found their opportunities in industry. For example, Mickey Doty is vice president of a corporation that manufactures Stay-Dry Diapers. Joe and James McDonald are owners of the Modern Magnificant McDonald Bros. Mill. This is not a flour mill but a face powder mill which furnishes the face powder for all cosmetic companies. Helen Graham is a designer for a manufacturing con- cern that makes paper liners for garbage cans. Karen Kitzman is working for a New York newspaper writing an advice to the lovelorn column entitled Cap- able Counsel to Crushed Characters. She informed us she is an authority on this subject because of her fights with her husband, Jerry Baker. A Karen Hamilton is employed by the San Diego Zoo washing giraffes' necks. She told us she washes around 50 necks a day with her faithful old Ajax and sponge. As you might expect, many of our old friends are a part of the entertainment world. In fact, an ambulance drove -up to the ranch and two doctors helped out a black- haired man fcomplete with spit curls and sideburnsb. As we rushed over we recognized Tommy Grudgings, the second Elvis Presley. The doctors assured us that the rea- son for him being encased in a cast from the waist down was not a car wreck but during one of his shows he had thrown both hips out of joint. Peggy Burg-graaf is an emportant part of the success of many TV programs. She is one of these behind the scene essentials who writes the questions and answers to all the big money quiz programs. , Dennis Johnson owns one of the famous gambling casinos in Las Vagas, Nevada. We -asked him why he chose this profession and he said he decided on gambling because of his success on taking a chance in a test at South High. We were all quite curious when a man came on horse- back to the reunion. It was Wayne Witt who now plays the part of Wyatt Earp on television in a weekly show on Station DDT Channel 99. Helen Ashby is the featured attraction at the Ciros Nightclub in Hollywood. She is a toe dancer and is the only one who can whirl like a spinning top on top of a cocoanut. Pat Thomas went to Beauty School after graduation and has a full-time job waving and combing the hairdos of the men in her husband's orchestra, Sam's Syncopated Sophisticatesf' Men wear their hair even longer and in more complicated hair styles now than they did 10 years ago and Pat works all night and most of the next day. By the way this orchestra was changed from an all-girl to an all-men orchestra after the leader got married. Jerry Smith is making use of his experience in speech work at South High and is master of ceremonies on a new television series, This Is Your Death, sponsored by the well known poison De-Con. Then last and very late, Rita Nilles arrived. She has made a name for herself not only on TV but also in personal appearances on her tours as a wrestler. She is known professionally as Nilles the Nitrogen Bomb. We found Farrell to be a very good host, and after having a wonderful time, everyone got together and sang an old song, which was a hit the year they graduated, Que Sera Sera tWhatever Will Be Will Bel.
