THE FUNNY BRATS The play takes place in the living room of the Gresham home. Dick and Harriet tRichard Spain and Carolyn Coghlanl high school youngsters of Sylvia Gresham 1Linda Biewenj are try- ing to marry off their dictatorial older brother, Tom tRoger Rolandj. Sylvia, al- though in love with her dead husband's brother, Loren Gresham tCharles Kitzmanl, is planning to marry Whaley McWhorter QDavid Dawsonj against the wishes of everyone except Whaley and Aunt Hettie Higginbotham iKareen Daglej. The Brats complicate Tom's love affair with Lauralee Lynde fBeverly Wittj when they involve him with a widowed astrologist, Gwynette Gadwood fNorma Hunterj and the servant girl Aurora Borealis Pike lNeva McCulleyJ. Aurora's boyfriend, a wrestler, Boogerface Boggs tPat Clerkinj adds to the confusion when he becomes jealous and due to the Brats, mistakes Whaley for Tom and thrashes him thoroughly. In the end serious romance developes for: Sylvia and Loren, Gwynette and Whaley, Lauralee and Tom, Aurora and Boogerface. The Brats, Dick and Harriet find they have a new dictator in their future step- father, Uncle Loren. So, exciting results were bound to occur when wealthy, dictatorial Mr Page decides to end his daughter Janet's romance with Jack Prescott by taking her to Florida. From there he thinks it would be easy to send her to South America for a year's stay with his brother. But, when Jack found out what had happened he took a plane to Florida. Upon his arrival he enlists the aid of his college friend Pete Carter. To prevent Mr Page's knowing Jack was there, Pete imper- sonated a pretty girl, hoping to vamp Mr. Page and persuade him to postpone his trip. All was going fine until nosey Miss Luella Watts. a guest in the hotel. accuses Jack of breaking the lock on Mr Page's suitcase. When the police are called. it all looked hopeless for Jack and Janet-until a very lucky incident occurs that solves the difficulty to everyont-'s satisfaction and complete enjoyment. .. ii ' I 1-4 K l .ll 2 ggi E. April 1, 1955, the Senior Class of 55 decided they would have a reunion at the Flamingo Club in Chicago, April l, l965. On behalf of the Patriot-Chronicle, we 'eporters were sent by plane to Chicago to obtain the 'BIG STORY fClass of '55 reunioni. As we stepped nto the plane we were unexpectedly greeted by a tall, :lark, and handsome pilot. Who do you suppose it could :e???? No one but our own Jack Showman--pilot of W.l.Z. Super-sonic Jet Airlines. After a smooth foam :ushioned landing we realized we were at the Chicago Airport. A modern electronically driven escalator was aeinvushed up against the plane by one of the employ- aes. hen he took our luggage we recognized Richard Spain, the chief bell hop of this airport. We knew he was the chief by his red attire, with the gold trimmings. We went into the terminal and from there got a taxi. After finally managing to stuff all our luggage and our- selves in the cab, we discovered Larry Walker was the iriver. We got the thrill of our lives as he dived between :ar after car to the sound of screeching tires. We arrived safely, much to our surprise, at the Flam- ngo Club where we were escorted up an immense hall- vay with wall to wall black carpeting and beautiful Flamingos flapping in huge wrought iron cages along the walls. We were greeted at the door by the Flamingo Zlub's very gracious hostess-a graceful dignified per- nonage wearing a sleek black satin dress trimmed in :ink Flamingo feathers. She was Judy Hall and soon nade us feel very much at home. The members of the party were beginning to gather it their tables and we decided we'd better too. Just as ve sat down and things quieted down Richard Armstrong President of the Senior Class, 53 , 54 , and 55 , took :harge of the meeting. Rich is now teaching music at Bibson High. His regular attendance at the girls' basket- mall games gave him the necessary connections for ob- aining this professorship. Special music introduced the beginning of the floor :how and entertainment was afforded by Carolyn Cogh- an and her Baton Twirling Animals. fMainly monkeys md dogs.J After this crowd pleasing act was finished, a large rampoline was brought to the center of the stage, as he announcer gave way to the Klassy Kitzman Quin- et . Much to our surprise and amazement who should :ounce out onto the trampoline but Charles Kitzman, Geisha, and 3 little towheaded boys. They jumped, mounced, and somersaulted to a fine hand of applause. kfter all had died down, one small pair of hands was till clapping vigorously. We looked and noticed a small roy in the front row between his father and mother. To nur surprise we recognized Dave Dawson and his wife. Dave Jr., it seems, is quite an athlete himself and hopes .omeday to play on one of his father's What Cheer H. S. eams. As they finished removing the trampoline from he stage, Chuck, Neisha, and their boys came out and mmediately the boys and Dave Jr. got acquainted, so all were happy. We decided maybe the home folks would like to :now a little about these Seniors so we started our in- erviews. First we saw Roger Roland, who'd been mak- ng quite a name for himself with his new Roland Won- ler , a three-legged, wingless chicken. He's got 3 kids if his own and hates to have them fighting over the lrumsticks. A fashion show interrupted our interviewing for a ew moments and we were surprised to find Kareen Jagle modeling Tall Girls Fashions . She works for one if the leading New York dress shops and is one of the iighest paid models in the business. After the oh's and ah's of the ladies died down we started once again on our interview tour. We heard Dr. Bob Hazen being paged and while hurrying out he stopped to tell us that he was a foot specialist and had just been called to subdue an attack of athlete's foot. As we continued we ran into Beverly Witt. She is working at McCulloch's Ford Garage as a bookeeper. She had to marry the boss to cover up all the mistakes that she made. We decided we'd done enough touring for the pre- sent and would eat along- with the rest of them. We picked up our menu and discovered that the food was being prepared by a special person who now operates Norma's Hideout . When the delicious meal was brought out to be served, Norma Hunter emerged amid a loud burst of applause. She, as we said before, now operates Norma's Hideout which has become a favor- ite hangout for the kids. Norma is about to sell out and go to Germany where she will open up another Hide- out . As we were finishing our dinner one of Arthur Godfrey's Little Godfreys' was announced to sing the number, Memories . It was a special treat, as the Little Godfrey turned out to be Linda Biewen. She was on his Talent Scout program and Arthur liked her so well that she replaced Lu Ann Simms. We decided to resume our tour and the next person we met was Roger Moorehead. Roger is now in the Navy and is coaching, Moorehead's Magnificent Misses , the No. 1 Wave's Basketball Team of the nation. Roger in- sists that all his players be at least 6 feet tall and bear a striking resemblance to Marilyn Monroe. We next came upon Marilyn Utt who at the present time is a secretary. Her 70 words a minute in typing fin- ally paid off. She got a good steady job and the Boss's son. Shirley Foglefwe discovered, was absent because she was having trouble with a telephone operator's strike in her District. We met Loren Briggs a few minutes later. He now owns and constructs the famous Briggs Hotels . He has two new 65 Oldsmobiles, one for work and one for pleasure. We were guests at Loren's Hotel during our stay in Chicago. A Nancy Coble came in late because one of her thorough-bred Morgans had been deathly sick and she couldn't leave him. She's now raising and showing Morgans from her estate in Kentucky, a beatiful place no tourist should miss. We ran into Neva McCulley a short distance down the table and found that she had become a Truant Officer. We had talked to everyone in the room, it semed, but as we consulted our list of former Seniors we found we hadn't yet seen Pat Clerkin. Just as we were getting ready to leave for the Briggs Hotel , and some well deserved rest, in came Pat. Late as usual!!! This time he had another excuse. His job, weatherman on the Shell Weather Tower, had caused the delay. He couldn't find anyone to take over his program for him so he had to stay and do it himself. . It seems that all the Seniors are happy and enjoy- ing their chosen professions and lives, so a tired but happy group of reporters finally got to the hotel where we could write our Big Story' in peace. Thus was the happy ending to a happy reunion of the 1955 Seniors of What Cheer High. B.K. A.H. B.B. H.M. Cfadd .M5f0rg In the fall of 1943 an elevator started in the basement of the Brick School, loaded with 24 youngsters. Out of the 24, seven are still on the elevator. As we look back to the good old days and our first operetta we remember: Pat Clerkin as Buster Brown, a dog. Larry Walker as Santa Clause, the teeny-weeny fellow. Carolyn Coghlan as an Angel. Roger Moorehead as Buzz, a bee. Richard Armstrong as Felix, a frog. Linda Biewen as Kitty Gray, a kitten. Roger Roland as Chicken Little, a chick. After acquiring what the grade had to give us we were off for the Second Grade. Here we found the tall one of our class, our future basket ball player Kareen Dagle. Our third grade was quiet and uneventful. On to the fourth grade where we found a blond, shy, quiet, farm boy. As time went by we found him to have a pleasing way with the girls. This could be none other than Charles Kitzman. Also we found Shirley Fogle a gentle good-natured girl, who is always ready to do her part and do it well. In the fifth grade two more boys jumped on the elevator. Bob Hazen who is the catcher for the baseball team. The other, Loren Briggs, known for his quietness, yellow Olds, and girl friends in What Cheer and points North. On to the sixth grade where we remember Miss McKay who is now Mrs. Don Lewis, as our teacher, who gave us treats for getting 10092 in spelling for the six weeks. Then to the seventh grade where we added Norma Hunter. Norma is still one of our hard working classmates. In this grade we had, our first banquet and the boys won their first basket- ball trophy. On to the 8th grade where Jack Showman, a muscular and mechanical young man, joined us. Also we found a dark, good-looking girl who be- came Queen of our Homecoming this year, Beverly Witt. In the last semester came a girl from Kes- wick. Judy Hall, the chubby one of our class. ln the 8th grade Glenn Aalbers entered, also. He was a jolly, good natured, likeable person. It was a shock to us all to learn of his tractor accident and death during our Junior year. We all, indeed, have missed him greatly. Highlights were a play, Junior High Banquet and class trip to Des Moines. So after thrills and chills up thru the first 8 floors, we were off to high school hoping in four years we would wind up on 12th floor. Starting high school with 24 students, we added two new ones, dark curly haired Richard Spain whose dimples are big as dollars, and Neva McCulley with her dancing ability. The highlight of our Freshman year was ini-tiation. By this time the elevator was climbing rapidly and we were now Sophomores. From Delta, a tall, dark haired friendly girl joined us. This was Nancy Coble. From Thornburg came attractive, cour- ageous Marilyn Utt. Eight of us served as waitress- es and waiters at the Junior-Senior Banquet. We also ordered our class rings. As Juniors we were honored with a new student, who came to be known as the brains of the class, David Dawson. Highlights of the year were the Junior Class Play and dance and some of the boys were on the basketball team which went to the Sub-State for the first time. Now the time has come that we have worked and hoped for. We are Seniors, 'twenty-one of us. Some events which we participated in and re- member are the projects for financing our class trip: a stand at the fair, bake sales, the carnival, slave auction, washing cars, class play and dance. Some of the boys were again fortunate enough to be on the basketball team which won the county tournament and reached the Sub-State for the second year in a row. Our class play The Funny Brats was pre- sented April 19th and 20th. Mr. Swanson did his best as director. An Activity Banquet was held May 3rd in the gymnasium. Awards for athletics, speech, journal- ism, music, cheerleading, and services were pre- sented. Special honors were: Citizenship Award fpresented by Bar Associa- tion! Roger Roland. Citizenship Award presented by Legion, girl, Neva McCulley. Citizenship Award presented by Legion, boy, Richard Armstrong. Runnersup for the last two awards were Bev- erly Witt and David Dawson. Valedictorian David Dawson Salutatorian Richard Spain The Junior-Senior Banquet was held May 10th in the What Cheer High School Gym. Flamingo Club was the theme. Mrs. Miller and the Juniors showed excellent hospitality. Baccalaureate was held Sunday evening May 15th at the Methodist Church with M-r. Thomas Dunn, Pastor of First Baptist Church in charge. May 17th we reached our goal. Commencement was held in the Gymnasium with Rev. C. E. Kings- ley of First Baptist Church in Grinnell as speaker. The crowning event of our school career is to CALM Hear ye, Hear ye, District Court, County of Keokuk, state of Iowa, is now in session. The will of the What Cheer Senior Class of 1955, is now to be read. The will reads as follows: To the future Agriculture classes goes Mr. Swanson's tall tales and his stories of life on the farm. The Senior Home Economics Class leaves to the future girls in Mrs. Miller's classes the stories of her romance with Claude. Coach Mille'r's Senior Typing class leaves all of its speed tests to the future typing classes. To Mr. York's future classes we leave his constitution. We leave Mrs. Swan- son's 6th period gossiping study hall to whomever is unfortunate enough -to get it. The English Liter- ature class leaves all English poetry to Miss Johnson and Claude Miller in the hope that they find someone who will make better use of it than we did. To the underclassmen goes our good grades, quiet ways, sports ability, and our ways and means of cutting classes. We will the following individually: Nancy Coble wills her big brown eyes to Mickey McKay. Neva McCulley wills her temper to Marilyn Mueller. Kareen Dagle wills her basketball ability to Larry Wagner. Beverly Witt wills her shy ways to Betsy Baylor. Norma Hunter wills her ability to smile for tips to Dee Ferguson. Shirley Fogle wills her ability to get along with children to Neisha Molyneux. Carolyn Coghlan wills her towering height to Larry 'Hamilton. be a class trip to Washington D. C. which is plan- ned for late in May. The train ride for most of us will be the first. The annual staff, whichconsists of David Daw- son, Editorg Beverly Witt, Assistant Editor, Roger Roland, Business Manager, Richard Armstrong, Assistant Business Manager, appreciated all the help given them by the Seniors and Mrs. Swan- son. The class motto is He Who is Determined Has Half His Work Done. We hope all the Seniors are determined to be millionaires. fPrepared by Roger Rolandl MA! Roger Roland leaves his mysterious Saturday night trips to Cedar to Gene Clerkin. Marilyn Utt leaves her crutches to Jerry Stull who obviously will need them if he stays behind the wheel of his car. Judy Hall wills her short hair to Mary Coulon. Charles Kitzman leaves his noon-hour romances to be equally divided between Eugene Dagle and James McDonald. Larry Walker wills his water-witching stick to Bill Kuntz. Pat Clerkin wills his notes from the teacher to Carol Wagner. Richard Armstrong leaves -the diamond which he recently purchased to Marlene Nelson in care of Dean Monroe. Richard Spain leaves all his publicity notices to Elizabeth Rea. Loren Briggs wills the ability to play both ends against the middle to Sam Bunting. Jack Showman wills his bashful smile to Alvia Hymes. David Dawson wills his grades to Dean Patter- son. Roger Moorehead wills his favorite pool cue to Leland Tolles. Linda Biewen wills her ability to cut classes to Darlene Nelson. Bob Hazen wills his prize Hereford to Joan Stan- ley. We declare ourselves to be of sound mind and the above to be our last will and testament.
