- -i - -- - COLORADO THE BETTER SCHOOLS AMENDMENT DEBATE At the request of Mr Hodges Mrs Smith ones of Shanghai Texas fBeatrlce Phelps, and Mrs Percy Vere de Longnecker of Houston fDorothy Estlll were present at the Better Schools Amendment meeting at the Hugh School October 28 They had been invited to make talks to the school patrons in favor of the amendment but through some error Mr Hodges selection was poor for they were both opposed to it As they were there they decided to speak against the amendment and this was exactly what they dxd Not to be outdone by such a mistake the affair was turned into a Joint debate by two of the Semors Willa Horton and Dave Dickson who refuted the visitors arguments so well that everyone was com mced that the amendment was the thing Mrs her time was up For this reason she had to be removed forcibly by the sergeant at arms who filed a complamt against her for disturbing the peace The picture above was taken durmg Mrs Smnth ones peech The stare vsas intended to intimidate the judges but It had no effect At the next meeting of the Senior Literary Society Mrs Smith ones was tried for dns turbmg the peace Both the defending and prosecuting attorneys put up strong pleas the result bemg a hung Jury Sl!! mm' Y ' .
