Surg LOLOR ADO THE LYCEUM COURSE The entertarnment furnrshed us by the members of the l jceum Course was unusually attractrve due to the facts that those who came before us were especially entertarnrng and rnstead of one course we were able to enjoy the efforts of two courses The Amerrcan l..egron our Superrntendent and a number of the enterprrsrng crtrzens ol Wharton secured the entertamments for us The first number of the course was grven on November 24 l920 Thrs number was composed of a troupe of Haw arran pl ryers rncludrng Toots Palca herself These were dressed rn natrve costume and played selectrons on varrous natrve rnstruments I rs needless to say that the audrtorrum w as paclced to the utmost for there rs nothrng more pleasrng than the Hawarran musrc Mr Robert Bowman gave Irs enterlarnment on November 28 Mr Bowman rs a famous and wonderful rmpersonator He entertarned hrs audrence wrth portrayals from lrfe and lrter ture Hrs rmpersonatron of Shylock was a real contrrbutron to Lyceum ar By the ard of parnts wrgs and other accessorres each character appealed to the eye as well as rl e ear All of Mr Bowman s portrayals were unrque entertarnrng and rnstructrve Matthew Wayman the traveller pcet and lecturer was wrth us on anuary 28 The sul,ject of hrs lecture was Hard Trmes Thrs was not a long boresome lecture but rt was a masterprece Mr Wayman s personalrty and the brrllrant way rn whrch he delrvered hrs message held hrs audrence spellbound untrl tlae very end of the speech Hrs vrvrd account of the thrrllrng and hcrrrd exj errences of our boys durrng the past war rendered hrs lecture rntensely rnterestrng rl he Musrcal Arts may be classed as one of the best numbers of our courses thrs year It was grven on anuary I8 There were four real musrcal artrsts rn thrs number all of them young men They played and sang many mtrve Amerrcan songs as well as class real and popular musrc No other group of the Lyceum courses had a greater number of admrrers than thrs one and therr program came to an end all too qurclcly The Berkley Sextette vrsrted us on December Z2 Thrs was composed of srx young lady artrsts who played on the bass vrolrn cello vrolrns and prano What proved of specral rnterest was a recrtatron of Hrawatha Thrs was rendered rn a beautrful manner The Smrth McAdoo Duo was grven February I8 Mrss Smrth gave many rnterestmg readrngs all of whrch were humorous Her rmrtatron of a baby cryrng demonstrated a marked perfectron Mrss lVlcAdoo rs a harprst very young and attractrve wrth a mag netrc personalrty She rs certarnly a master of her beautrful rnstrument She played many drfhcult preces wrth perfect ease Mrss lVlcAdoo rs rndeed a promrsrng artrst The program of the Rondolrers was enjoyed especrally by the young boys and g rls srnce rt consrsted only of jazz musrc played by saxophones and other rnstruments And jazz musrc thrs was The program was drvrded rnto two parts The frrst was composed of a number of songs and readrngs the second all Exe members appeared rn naval costume Mr Ray rn hrs lecture March 23 gave the rmpressron of a calm exterror but be neath thrs he has a mrnd fertrle wrth rdeas He carrred hrs audrence wrth the force of hrs evrdent earnestness for he rs a man of decrded vrews and posrtrve convrctrons yet modest enough to admrt he may sometrmes be mrstalcen rn hrs vrews Thrs number ended the course and rt seems that the best was saved for the last As a whole the course was a perfect success ' Jr 1 . , ' 1 1 , , . 1 , . 1 + 1 . 1 1 A l . 1 21 1 ' ' f- 1 1 1 , . . . , . . , . . . , , -- 1 1 1 1 1 - . . .. . ,, . - 1 1 . . , .I ' ' . 1. 1. , ' , . 1 1 1 1 1 - . . . . ,, . ,, . . . , .
