And he yearned to go down to the valley below But he lived on a mountain that was covered with snow And he knew it would be a difficult trek, But that was a journey he wanted to make — So he planned by day and he dreamed by night Of how he could reach The Great Shining Light . . . And one golden morning when dawn broke through And the valley sparkled with diamonds of dew He started to climb down the mountainside With The Windows of Gold as his goal and his guide . . . Their lust for life was an inspiration to us all. We can only sense their presence as we go our separate ways and know they will always be there beside us. We remember them in that we cherish the joy of knowing them and the happiness they brought, along with neverending kindness. How quickly they have changed our lives. We, the Seniors at Weymouth South High, and Yearbook Staff, would like to dedicate this yearbook to these inspiring people and to the four seasons. Without their knowledge and guidance this yearbook would not have been possible. We thank Mr. Creedon for his in organizing the sales of the ads. He has a special flair for getting the community and student-body interested in supporting our yearbook Thank you for all your time and efforts Mr. Creedon. Mr. Tohosky ' s expertise in the field of photography has proven to be a great asset to our school. H e. along with the Photography Club, are responsible for many of the photographs which make up this yearbook Along with his involvement with the 1986 yearbook,Mr. Tohosky, with help from Mr. Nichols, created two multi -image slide shows. These slide shows take a great deal of creativity and we appreciate all the time you spend working on them. Mr. Nichols is a major contributor to our yearbook He, with the assistance of his Industrial Graphics Classes, produced all the typesetting found in this book Mr. Nichols ' major contributions were the Senior Index, and the ads. Without the ads we would not be able to afford to print the yearbook Your time and help are greatly appreciated Mr. Nichols. Finally we thank our yearbook advisor Mr. Pithie. This was Mr. Pithie ' s first yearworking with the yearbook and without his artistic talent we would not have the yearbook we do. Mr. Pithie we can ' t begin to thank you for all your time, energy, and for making our work fun ! SOUTH HIGH SCHOOL 1854-1986 The first high school in Weymouth was established in 1853 in the Town House that was located in the geographic center of Weymouth at Washington and Middle Streets. The following year the School Committee decided to establish two high schools. For the first five months the school was held in Rogers Hall on Pleasant Street, South Weymouth for students in the southern end of Town. The Chauncy apartment building now occupies the site. The next five months the school was moved to Weymouth Landing for students from North and East Weymouth. In 1865 Two separate high schools were established in the Town. In South Weymouth the students attended classes in the vestry of the Union Congregational Society on Pleasant Street and in 1868 The High School moved back to Rogers Hall where it remained until the completion of the first High School building in South Weymouth in 1874. The site chosen for the new school was on Torrey Street on the site now occupied by part of the Old South Union Church. The school opened its doors at the beginning of the second term in the spring of 1875 and was called the Torrey Street School. A few years later the name was changed to the Howe School in recognition of Dr. Appleton Howe, a prominent physician of South Weymouth. Dr. Howe was a former State Senator and for many years was a member and Chairman of the Weymouth School Committee. The faculty consisted of two teachers, Mr. George B. Vose, who was also the Principal, and Miss Alice R. Rogers who was the Assistant Principal. Their annual salaries were respectively $1,300. and $450. In the spring of 1875 the first graduation exercises were held for three senior students, Mary E. Logue, Lizzie Reed, and T. Irving White. When the former Nevin School was being built in 1917 the Howe School was torn down and amongst the items saved were a few of the original slate blackboards. These blackboards were then installed in the Nevin School, In 1983 when the Nevin School was being torn down, several of the original slates were salvaged and presented by the South Shore Hospital to the Resource Center of the Museum in the School located in the South Junior High School In rememberance of the first High School building in South Weymouth built 112 years ago, one of the original slates from the Howe School was placed in the present South High School that opened its doors in 1970. He presides as Honor Society president is co -editor of the yearbook and is a varsity member of the math team Shelagh Kenney - Shelagh recently attended Harvard for a course in French. She serves as secretary of the Honor Society and plans to go on to college in September. One of the highlights of these efforts was a decisive victory over Hingham High School in Souths first home night game in mid - October. From that point on, the team ' s efforts didn ' t deminish but the results were less than desirable, as South tied and lost some thrilling yet disappointing games. Although the team ' s record was not a memorable one, the positive attitude of Captains Joe Sylvester and Joe Fitzgerald and the hard work of many other underclassmen does deserve recognition. Coach Webber would like to thank these individuals, the coaching staff, the parent boosters, the cheerleaders and all those affiliated with the Weymouth South Football Program for their efforts. McNight The Volleyball Team ' s record of 3-5 was good for South ' s first season. The starters were Captains Dawn Connelly and Caryn Condon; along with fellow players Katie Porter, Chris Joyce, Alexandra Naghsh and Libby Porter. Senior Dawn Bagley and underclassmen Katie Gibson, Jennifer Wood, Tara Donovan and Monica Comeau earned Varsity certificates. Seniors who aided the team were Dianne Abdy, Sharon Banks, Paula Clayton, Eileen Gavin and Bev Roberts. Donovan This year ' s soccer team displayed a great deal of team spirit and enthusiasm playing in a very strong league. With only six Seniors, led by captains Gary Boucher, Steven Coyle and Sean Doyle, the team posted a 5 - 10-1 season Seniors Dave Bristol, Rich Fox and Dave Donovan also played very steady. Daley After coming out of a season last fall, this year s team, coached by Miss, Dean, suceeded in compleating the year with a winning record of 7 -6 -5. This year ' s Seniors contributed a great deal to the team ' s success. At offence Seniors Kristen Babineau, Kerne Manning and Katie O ' Brien kept South ' s scoring opportunities up. Although one of the better defensive players, Rae Ann Sullivan, was injured early in the season the defense was kept up by fellow Seniors Eileen Gaudiano at stopper and Toni Solimini in net All in all the season was a competative one and was enjoyed by all participants. Ames Starting the season with a very young and inexperienced group, the South H. S. Wildcat Boys Cross Country Team emerged as a force to be reckoned with Senior tn -captains David Duseau, Joe Driscoll and Scott Rand led a group of 28 runners into workouts during the last week of August By season ' s end a 5 -3 dual meet record was compiled which put them in a tie for third place in the O. C. L. with the top runners returning for next year ' s team. Sophomores Greg Putnam and Tom Bleakney rivaled for number 1 position throughout the season with Junior Steve Ames running as Souths number 3 man Freshmen Rob Hanna and Junior Scott Patterson completed the top five with Junior Tony Adams, Freshmen Steve Gregg and Sophomore Jim Gaudet running as 6th -8th men Next year s South team will be stronger and more experienced with good chances of winning the league crown CROSS COUNTRY (Girls) Top Row : E. Lapnse, M Conlin Weymouth South ' s Girls Cross Country Team had an outstanding season finishing with a9 -0 record and as the Old Colony League and League Meet Champions. They finished 5th at the Eastern Mass. Division II Championship meet and qualified for the All State Championship. They were lead by Seniors Joanne Rudolph, Coro! Stone, Shen Laprise and Lisa Fuller. Highlights of the season include : a 4 - 3 double O.T. victory over Weymouth North in the First County Cup Tournament; a second place finish in the O.C.L. qualification for State Tournament play ; a forth O.T. victory (6 - 5 ) against Suburban League Champion, Brockton ; noticeable was the collective senior leadership ; further recognition to the four O.C.L. All - Stars, Steve Goslin, Scott Brooks, Larry Gates, Tom McCarthy. The team should be described as a successful bunch of pesky muckers . CHEERLEADERS Top Row : Kim Cipollone, Tracey Ferry, Lisa Holbrook, Barbara Fogal, Diane Walenius and Robin McKay Bottom Row: Jenn DeLorenzo, Michelle Farrell, Co -Captain Chnstine DellaValle, Co -Captain Michelle Toth, Nicole Lyster and Allyson Whouley The Cheerleaders ' wish this year was to bring a new sense of spirit to Weymouth South They ' ve worked really hard to achieve this goal. They began last summer by spending a week at cheerleadmg camp at Westfield State College to prepare for the cheering seasons ahead They brought home several blue nbbons and the spint award In addition to this, Allyson Whouley was chosen as this years All - Amencan Cheerleader. The trh captains John Garufi (121), Mark O ' Sullivan (1 28 ), and Derek McClellan (1 69 ) lead the Wildcats with their strong winning records. Other wrestlers who added depth were Juniors : Joe Bognano, John H ickey, and Carl Kelly (who took 2nd in Sectional Tournament ). The team has a lot of new comers and a very promising future. The two Senior co - captains were Lynn Hanson and Colleen Grant. With the entire team sticking together, the season was victorious with a record of 7 - 2. I j l en Theirno ] on es Barry 6 3 e Mark Karlberg (Capt. ) Chris Home (Capt. ) The 1986 Boys Baskeyball Team had a very successful season finishing with a record of 10-5. Seniors Mark Karlberg, Jeff Smith, Chris Home, Steve Hayes, and Ken Fuller were major contributors. The season was highlighted by numerous victories : the Christmas Tournament, the two wins over North, and a trip to the State Tournament to name a few. Chris Home, John Cawley and Allen Jones were chosen to the O. L.C. All Star Team. Coach Fleming was very happy with this years team and is looking forward to another successful season next year! 127 30 KR1STEN JACKIE n „ BABENEAU COLLINS Cr$ ay H The Girls Basketball Team was led by captains Caryn Condon and Jackie Collins. The team finished 9-10 overall getting some fine play from Seniors Eileen Gaudiano, Kristen Babineau, and Maria Shea. Although they started the season slowly, they finished strong, winning five out of the last eight games. The future looks promising with returning players Beth Donovan, Stacey O ' Brien, Kate MacDougall, Michelle Berts, Ellen Meany, and Terri Ahlstrom. The Junior Varsity had a very strong season with a record of 15-3. After the commendable effort but eventual loss of the annual Homecoming game (20 - 1 4 ), an estimated 1 30 couples turned out in semi - semi formal attire to bring in a profit that went toward the Senior Class treasury. The idea of a King and Queen was nixed by the G.O. in favor of a Homecoming Court. Ten Seniors were chosen on a basis of who students felt best represented our school in a way that makes them proud to be part of the class. The court consisted of Kristin Babineau, Kim Cippolone, Larry Gates, Eileen Gaudiano, Rich Fox, Steven Hayes, Matt Marcotte, Joanne Rudolph, Joe Sylvester, and Michelle Toth. Although D.J. KennethKarlberg wore many students out, many other students were still wide awake at the end of the night and were later seen at restaurants and parties. All in all, our first Homecoming Dance was alot of fun and a tradition we hope to continue. LIFE What is it? To some, life is an everlasting hell, But others see it as a gleaming waterfall. Me ? I visit both worlds everyday. Often, I am on my own though, Facing difficult problems and decisions. It ' s a long road to travel, But I ' ve made it safely so far. In the last year or so, I ' ve rarely seen that gorgeous sunset. Hopefully, some day soon, I will go to that gleaming waterfall And enjoy life to its fullest, Never returning to my nightmarish dream.
