WEYMOUTH NORTH and VOCATIONAL TECHNICAL HIGH SCHOOL THIS YEARBOOK IS DEDICATED TO PAUL ALBERT LAWLER September 7, 1965 — July 22, 1981 I cannot say, and I will not say That he is dead. He is just away. With a cheery smile, and a wave of the hand. He has wandered into an unknown land. And left us dreaming how very fair It needs must be since he lingers there. And you — O you, who the wildest yearn For the old — time step and the glad return — Think of him faring on, as dear In the love of there as the love of here; Think of him still as the same, I say; He is not dead — he is just away! James Whitcomb Riley 2 HOMECOMING The Homecoming finalists, left to right, are: Ronald Long, Patricia Breed, Maureen Reilly, Edward Joseph Foster, Tracy Anderson (Queen), Robert Cavanaugh (King), Edward John Foster, Lori Wright, Kristine Mattson, and Michael Waithe. 8 10 11 15 Itlterlaken, Switzerland February 17-26, I984 16 18 FACULTY Dr. Leon H. HOLE IN THE WALL The Drama Club ' s year was highlighted by the fantastic Broadway show Annie . It was the first year in North High ' s history that the Drama Club sponsored the Se- nior Class Play. The huge success was great- ly due to the directing ta- lents of Mrs. Janet Smith, Mr. Allen Green and Mrs. Dorothy L. Kelley. The club competed in the State Finals of the Massachusetts Drama Festival with the power- ful one act play Saint Joan . Senior class mem- bers of the cast of St. Joan were: Laura Cul- bert, Eric Gagnon, Mike Crisafulli, Brian McGo- wan, and Paul Gagnon. It was another exciting year for the WNH Drama Club one of which the members should be proud. From the start of the season, the team continued to improve and posted impressive wins over a strong Weymouth South and Plymouth- Carver teams. Lead by the offensive hitting of Kris- tin Leonard, Linda Gillan, and CoCo Dailey; and the consistent pitching of Kim Flaherty, the squad developed into a competitive unit that could not be taken lightly by the opposition. In the field the smooth gloves of Jody Fay at third, Mary MacKay at Shortstop, Jean Barilaro and Cathy Cocce pla- tooning at Second and Lisa Foley on First kept the squad in contention. The outfield consisted of Mary Walsh, left, Jean Heine in center and Cindy Shea in right. Platooning in the outfield were Nichole Johnson, Kelly Litchfield and Sheila Padden. Next Year we look forward to a more experienced and knowledgeable team that will undoubtably win many of the games that slipped by us by a single run. L 8 VARSITY SOFTBALL Even though their record did not show it (7 wins — 6 losses), Weymouth North had its share of out- standing players on the Varsity Softball Team. North placed 3 players Sue Geddis, Kelly and Lisa Emmett on the Old Colony League All Star Team. Kelly Emmett lead the North Team with a .379 batting average and some strong play at pitcher. Sister Lisa was the winning pitcher for all the victo- ries, and came on strong in the second half of the season. Sue Geddis showed she had the ability both at the plate and in the outfield as she rounded out the trio. With the graduation of Casey Balzano, the RBI leader, Kathy Lyons, Eleanora Grasso, and Karen Heine, Coach Arnold will be depending on strong performances by underclassmen Kristi Savage, Sue Geddis, Sue Hurley, Kelly Emmett, Lisa Emmett, Sharon Brigham, Dawn Gillan, and Andrea Maimaron. She may also receive some unanticipated help from some of last year ' s Junior Varsity team. (front (back row) Lori Wright Andrea Maimaron, Karen Heine, Casey Balzano, Eleanora Grasso, Kathy Lyons, Dawn Gillan. row) Kelly Emmett, Kristi Savage, Barbara OToole, Sue Hurley, Sue Geddis, Sharon Brigham, Lisa Emmett. 59 i jr. Sa w The Spring Track Team enjoyed another fine year finishing with 6 victories against 4 defeats. This continues the tradition of never having a los- ing season. Some of the outstanding performers were: Laurie Leonard and Ann Cullivan in the two mile, Cindy Crocker and Maureen Tracy in the mile, Kris Silva in the 880, Ginny Conroy in the 440, Helen Cullivan in the 220, Laurie Williams in the 1 00, and Pam Sandahl in the hurdles. In the field events Julie Deschenes and Joy Gard- ner were top performers, as were Karyn Stevenson, Nina MacAleese in the Javelin. The High Jump was capably handled by Tricia Williams, Diane Brooks, Nancy Sciaraffa, and Chris Roche. Laurie Williams was outstanding in the Long Jump. With over fifty girls returning next year, the future looks very bright and the record of never having a losing season remains unblemished. Record of Meets (The team with the lowest score wins.) Wey. Their record was 4 wins and 1 1 losses. Though their season was not every successful, they were full of team effort and had great coaching as well as support by Coach Manzelli. There were also some outstanding players on the team. I wo freshmen, James Jackson and Mark Donovan did very well. This was the first time freshmen had played on the Varsit Team. Goalie Paul Donovan set a school record by posting his second career shutout in the beginning of the season. arsity Team: (Front) Coach Manzelli, Jim Molignano, Peter Murphy, Paul Donovan, Steve Masison, Paul Hughes, om Taccini, Asst. The season was enjoyable not only because of the record, 9 wins 5 losses, but because of the girls on the team. Exceptional effort was made by the team captain, Christine Sullivan and also by senior Joan Sinkiewicz. The team practiced long and hard to become the best they could and they succeeded. Individual and team pride formed a solid team unit of which North was proud. Debra Dalessandro, Christine Sullivan, Joanne Cunniff, Wendy Jacobsen, Kathy INorve, Joan Sinkiewicz, Katherine Sullivan, Lisa Kelly, Patty Garrity, Elizabeth Hunter, Walter Murphy. 67 The Boy ' s Tennis Team showed a great improvement over the last year. Led by Coach Steve Shoff, North broke its two-year losing streak with three wins. The team sported strong senior and underclassmen players and, with new recruits coming in, North looks forward to a winning season this year. I This fall Weymouth North High ' s newly formed girl ' s volleyball team made its debut. Playing on an independent schedule, the girls compiled a record of 1 win and 6 losses. Lead by captains Sharon Brigham and Michelle Akoury, the girls improved con- tinuously throughout the season. Next year promises to be an exciting and successful year for our newest team! 70 Autumn brings school but even before the first term starts, the Weymouth North Football Team has been diligently working under the watchful eyes of Coach McPherson. With the loss of many exceptional players from last year ' s team Coaches McPherson, Fitzgerald, Morelli, Manzelli, and Cobban had a rebuilding process to undertake. The Maroons, lead by the outstanding playing of Ed Foster, Gerry Macklin, and Michael Waithe, obtained a respectable record of 4 wins, 5 losses, and 1 tie. Their determination and hard work was particularly notable in the Thanksgiving Day Game against rival South High. Many of the members of this team will return next year but the following players graduate this year: Michael Joyce, Ed Foster, Michael Waithe, Robert Cavanaugh, Joseph Gallagher, Steven Power, Bill Ketchen, John Garner, Gerry Mackin, Sylvester Zeig- ler, Matt Boudreault, Mike Bunszell, Mike Crisafulli, Ron Long, and Ed Gruszka. This entitled them to a second place standing in the Old Colony League. The team was guided by the strong coaching of Dick Hayes and also Senior Co-Captains Andrea Maimaron and Patricia Breed. Being a very young team, next year looks to be an even more successful season. The team won the distinction of sharing the title as Old Colony League Champions. The team was captained by seniors Rob Costello and Tom Hurney, and ju- nior Pat Fitzgerald. Rob Costello and Tom Hurney once again displayed their strong athletic abil- ity. Pat Fitzgerald was undefeated throughout the season. Next year ' s team should be equally successful with the talents of the remain- ing athletes. 78 This year ' s Girl ' s Cross Country team had one of its strongest and most successful seasons yet. The team was lead by seniors Maureen Tracy and Kris Silva, and was successful in defeating all the Old Colony League with the exception of Marshfield. Next year ' s team holds much promise in the exceptional ability and enthusiasm of Juniors Kelly MacMillan, Laurie Leonard, Chris Preskins, and Maureen Johnson. c R O S s (front) Kelly MacMillan, Cheryl White, Kris Silva, Maureen Tracy, Cindy Crock- er, Maureen Brown, (back) Annie Cullivan, Laurie Leonard, Christine Pre- skins, Coach Wilson, Helen Cullivan, Chris Petterson, Maureen Johnson. c o a N T R Y 79 (front) Larisa MacDonald, Beverly Fulton, Susan Evans, Jennifer Evans, Cindy Shea, Susan Bates, Suzanne Donovan, Ann Walsh, Jennifer Jones, Suzanne Jones (back) Michelle McCann, Wendy Molignano, Maryanne MacDonald, Joy Gardner, Mancy Donovan, Elaine Naegelin, Jane Fulton, Michelle Lavangie, Mary MacKay, Joanne Villa. 81 During the course of the season, three school records were broken. Sophomore Pam Sandahl set a record in the 50 yard dash hurdles. Sophomore Jenny Conroy set two records. One was in the 50 yard dash and the other in the 300. The team finished with a record of three wins, five losses and one tie. The record, however, did not tell the whole story. The enthusiasm and the dedication of the team members was ex- tremely satisfying. The girls were able to make every meet extremely close and exciting. Special thanks go to Co-captains Senior Kris Silva and Junior Jackie Foster. Next year we are looking forward to de- veloping a winning record to go with our dedicated efforts. We won 7 out of 1 1 events in the majority of our meets yet lost because of a lack of depth. The Team placed sixth in the Class A State Championship. Outstanding performers were: Pat Fitzgerald, who won the Class A 2-Mile Championship, Co-Captain Tom Humey, who placed fourth in the High Hurdles and in the State Class A. Championship, and Glen Boudreault who tied the school 50 yard record 3 times during the season. Every member of the team improved his times during the season. Special mention must be made of our 600 yard specialist, Axel Heitmann, and exchange student from Germany who was a superb member of our team. They became the Old Colony League Champions winning all of their meets — 12:0. The team consisted of Beverly Fulton, a senior and co-captain. A junior, Tricia Williams was the League all-around all-star. Marianne Navicky, a sopho- more also was a co-captain. Julie Gifford and Cindy Slattery, sophomores, helped the team a great deal. A freshman, Sandra Falzone, was the League vaulting and uneven parallel bars freshman, ably assisted the team. Big fac- tors contributing to this success was one of the best lines in Division One hockey which in- cluded junior Tim Sweeney, and senior co- captains Kevin Heffernan and Mike Gervasi who finished one, two, and three respectively, in O.C.L. scoring. North featured five Old Col- ony League All Stars in Sweeney, Heffernan, Gervasi, and seniors Pat Murray and Kevin Player. Seniors Jeff Saliba and Bill Elwood played consistently well while Mike Flynn, John Smith, and Keith Delvecchio also played well. In regular season play the Maroons com- piled a 15-1-1 record and were entering the quarterfinal round of the EMass tournament as of this writing . . . The Girls Basketball Team finished the season with a very respectable 13 and 7 record. They finished third in the Old Colony League, missing the post- season play by one game. Leading the team were senior Co-Captain Andrea Maimaron, senior Sue Hurley, junior Co- Captain Kelly O ' Brien and sophomore Aileen Duffy. Everyone contributed to the success of the season and this team was the hardest working team in the coaching career of Coach Arnold. The season was highlighted by beat- ing South in the final game of the year by 10 points. In addition the team played the top teams evenly. Unfortunately, there were more downs than ups. The high- light of the season was the defeat of Weymouth South, 42-38 in a game that North was supposed to lose. Although the team did not finish with a very impressive record, the boys managed a season of close, exciting games. We recall our first weeks of high school. We started as timid sophomores, overwhelmed by the seemingly endless procession of faces in the halls. But eventually we found our places, meeting new friends and discovering mutual interests. In our junior year we strengthened our ties with friends and teachers alike, becoming more and more involved in our school. As seniors we led the school, enjoying our last year but eager to acquire freedom. We learned as much from each other as we did in the classroom. We experienced happiness as well as the tears of pain involved in growing up, developing as human beings with each passing week. We will carry this experience with us as we leave the people who have been so important to us. The long-awaited graduation is finally here, but suddenly we realize that this time of our lives is over and we must face a new challenge. We are not certain of our futures, whether they lead to college, a job, or time to relax and get to know ourselves. Have we been prepared? Can we adjust to new demands? The answer lies in each one of us. If we have faith and perseverence, trust and confidence, nothing can stop us. Look upon the coming years as a chance to mature further and to set the standards for our lives to come - j ggtff High school may be finished, but the personal knowledge gained from it will carry us a long way. Keep in touch with friends who have brought laughter and support these last years. Most of all, we must try to fulfill our individual needs and follow the path that leads to happiness. Lisa A. Ki
