Outtield material is lacking, but the team will come through with their usual good record. az U SOCCER Some people call 1948 the year of upsets When Truman defeated Dewey and Cleveland finally edged out the Red Sox and the Yankees some were surprised But when a class B school in Wethersiield sent its soccer team onto the field there was no doubt in anyone s mind that here were the mak ings of a championship team Under the guidance of Coach Robert Burford and Captain Walt Kozuch the team which was ceded last in pre tournament selections brought honor and recognition to themselves and their school I doubt whether any team could have beaten Wethersfield as they went onto the field high in spirits and determined in mind Led by Earl Martel the team came through with flying colors The squad won nine lost three and tied three for an extremely success ful season with a strong team and an equally strong collection of reserves Don McCue alternated with Tolley and Derohanian at fullback Captain Kozuch Keller and Paar started at halfback with Hoff sticking his head in every once in a while The strong forward line was made up of Earl Martel at center who incidentally lead the team in scoring by denting the nets with eight goals Dick Lawton and Dick Akatysewski on the inside with Bob McKee and Vin Lisotto taking care of the wing positions. Charlie Derohanian will lead the team next year which should have ' definite possibilities, ' as Coach Burford would say. 63 TRACK The track team of 1948 flmshed w1th an unrrnpresslve record of one W1I'1 and four defeats The Blue and Whlte were sorely hurt by the graduat1on of R1ch1e Rugho the star of past years W1th Rugho gone the team was lackmg a replacement for hrm 1n the drscus and Javelm departments Wethersfxeld was also m1ss1ng the mater1al for the dashes But 1n the dlstance runnmg the Blue and Wh1te had a bnghter outlook Wlth George Keller rmprovmg greatly m h1s runrung and w1th Iohn Paar doxng h1s usual good runnmg the track team had no trouble 1n that department Another brlght spot on the squad was the relay team wh1ch turned out a bnlhant 1ob at every meet Wrth the return of Walter Whxtaker Coach Burford s fmcl Iohn Paar and George Keller I thlnk Wethersfreld can look forward to a good season rn 1949 64 , . , . 1 - - 1 1. . 11 1 1 1 , . ,Q 5 VARSITY BASKETBALL Mascots L to R N Weeks F Clarke Front row L to R G Holbrook I Paar Captam E Martel K Flemke C Dobler Back Row L to R Score-keeper G Clark R Lawton G Anderson W Kozuch Coach Burlord IUNIOR VARSITY Mascots I. to R N Weeks F Clarke Front Row l. to R E Hayes C Derohaman Cap- tam D Bowman E Budd R Marshall Back Row L to R Scorekee-per G Clark I Kmg P Steege T Gworek R Pomeroy R McKee Coach Burford BASKETBALL Wlth only two lettermen left from the precedlng year Wethersfleld s varsrty squad under the able leadershlp of Capta1n Earl Martel and somebody called Flemke the team got off to a pretty rocky start by berng set back by East Hartford Newrngton and Woodrow Wllson before they bounced back to defeat Mlddletown The team up to thrs pomt consrsted of Flemke Paar and Dobler as guards Holbrook and Anderson at center Captam Martel Lawton Melsterllng and Kozuch taklng over the forward posltrons After the Mlddle town game the fellows were aga1n hlgh tn Sp1Y1lS only to be let down by Rock vllle 28 to 35 The next game surprrsed everyone for the confldent Alumm team w1th former stars l1ke Hart Holden Grub1l1ch Dunn and Kemp to men l1OH only a few went down to defeat under the blrsterlng attack of a com flnal wh1stle was blown Wethersf1eld went down to a crush1ng defeat They aga1n bounced back when they defeated Mrddletown for the second t1me m one of the most thrllhng games played thls year Martel s foul shot won the game when he dumped rt rn wrth three seconds remalnlng to g1ve Wethers freld a 49 to 48 vrctory SPORTS IN REVIEW As I look back on the years I fxnd that our class drd very well 1n sports In our freshman year Earl Martel started on h1s way to become our best athlete by makmg the class teams Then Earl made the varsltles of the soccer and basketball squads and fmally topped rt off by bemg hrgh scorer on the soccer team We also were represented ably by Walter Kozuch Carl Dobler and George Holbrook Koke and Red became three letter men and Zeb starred on the basketball squad Our classmates fmally reached the herght of the1r sports career by lead1ng the soccer squad to the state C l A C champlonshrp All fn all we can be very proud of the sports record our class leaves behtnd 66 paratively inexperienced crew.
