This came to me fairly soon, as we were inside the heart of the jungle now. tOnly a few feet behind us on the beaches the growth is so thick you can not see them.l The next thing I knew I was up to my knees in mud, About this time I recall my senses awakening to the noises of the tropics at war, In the distance I could hear reports from all types of guns, and in the nearness of the undergrowth multi-colored birds let out weird calls. Overhead we could hear aircraft engaged in combat but we could not see them. As we moved along the foot path we heard the crack of a rifle and saw a marine, a scout, a hundred yards ahead of us fall to the ground, killed by a snipper s bullet We were rerouted and again we went forward ln this type of warfare there is no front line the war is all around you This fact was brought out further when shells started exploding a few feet away from us We now had one and only one idea 1n our heads and that was to see this place and get out of here as quickly as possible Not once on the tour of the island did we see live laps We did not have to see them to know they were here In every clearing or spot where under growth had been cleared away there were out posts once Iapanese now American The remains of lapanese equipment and troops were visible off to the sides of the path As it looked from the distance the design and work manship were poor Shells of all types littered the ground we were allowed to take a few of them home with us The Nipponese barrage was getting heavy so our guide decided this was a good time to clear out We walked a few feet then he opened a door and we stepped out of the Jungle into the bright sunshine of Chicago For the first time in a half hour we realized we had been seeing a War Bond Show in the U S A instead of the real things on some Island of the Pacific GEORGE B ARMSTEAD IR 45 .kv gf-J sJ ls war glorious? ' 92116 ' .ggaorfd Off to a good start in our Freshman year, we won both the Soccer and Basketball Championships, as well as having two Freshmen, Terry Christen- sen and 'lChic Ierome, cop the championship of the Badminton Tournament. Our ability at Soccer in our Sophomore year gave the upper classmen cause to worry. As we defeated the Iuniors, and in our first game held the Seniors to a O-U tie, later to be eliminated by them. C. Murphy was captain of our Sophomore Basketball Team. We encoun- tered unaccustomed speed and skill unknown in previous years. Though we didn't win a championship still we managed to give the Seniors and Iuniors some close games. Our Sophomore badminton champs, Sally May and Milly Young, took on the Senior Champs, and were defeated. ln our Iunior year, our smooth and efficient 'soccer team, captained by Eun Watson, upset the Seniors to become the champions. After winning one basketball game and losing one to the Seniors, we Iuniors were edged out in the deciding tussle. Bev. Hughes was our captain. Our Senior team, with Sally May, as captain, tied the Iunior Class for the championship of soccer. With a corker team led by Iean Marie Bartoes, we hope to capture the Basketball Championship for our Senior year. Because last year the time alloted for badminton tournaments was too short we were unable to play for the inter class championship however Iean Derick and Bernice Peck were our Iunior Champions This year we hope time allows us to complete the Tournament of which we have hopes of being cham pions All in all as our records show we have reasons to be proud of the athletic achievement of the Class of 45 f,lLaJm CM First Row L Karski I Sherman M Packard B Ianes B Hughes C Murphy R Manning I Doherty Second Row I l.aCava T Tabslney V Wheaton I Roane S Buck S Bennett V Camilleri R Porter B Miller M Starr M Pratt I Ierome Third Row H Curtis P Gaines S May I Bartoes D Burke M McGee M l-loar N Lee C Pierce E Watson E Wilcox Fourth Row Coroso M Couch D Reynolds B Massey A Iohnson V Coleman T Christens n L Studzinski M Mooney R Bonvouloir I - I f , , 'ff . Howlen, D. Befqgism, D. HQ1e, E. Rankin, H. cums, Cfadd .jshdforg As Freshmen, we were doubtful as to our rights and, not daring to trample on those of others, we were content to rest in obscurity. Re-inforced by our Rocky Hill enrollment, we were swept into our Sopho- more year. We were awed by the prospect of giving our own dance, and it was a relief to learn that Mr. Barnes was going to be our right-hand man. The l-lop was successful, an important milestone in our career as a class. Next we were strutting around boldly, referring to ourselves as The Iuniors. We were proud of our athletic prowess that year. Both girls' and boys' inter-class soccer teams were champions. Some of our classmates went to Boys' State. Even in our Iunior year, we gave some of our classmates to the services and others were leaving before Iune. We wanted to do something different- for them, so we gave a servicemen's dance jointly with the Sophomores. April rolled around with our Iunior Prom. Mr. Francis helped with the planning of it, and we're sure it was the best Prom ever given. We had climbed to the last rung of our ladder, shedding all traces of our Freshmen hesitancy. Our class gave this year's shrinking Freshmen a start with the Freshman Reception, to which they gave their eager support. The Senior Plays broke all records by having the largest attendance ever achieved by any Senior Play presentation This year more of our classmates left for the service and we also lost our Mr Barnes We resolved to make up doubly for the crater formed The varsity teams received a number of good players from our class and the boys inter class soccer team made the top again Our Senior Ball still lies ahead of us that and graduation week lt s hard to believe it but we are the class of 45 The numerals never had much meaning before They were too obscured by time a symbol never actually related to us Its here now This is 1945 our year' lll'll0l' gfaififlfll cfeague First Row G Armstead M I Williams C Ericson D Cramer I Williams T Rametta M House C Stone M Hyland M Peterson G Drolet P McCarthy M Inman E Ioyner E Ritchie M I OBrien I Blake F Bell I Doherty A Botters Third Row R Florian E Doyle I Anderson S Iainchill B Rowe P Parsons D Iaesche I Reader P Doolittle A Griswold N McDonough I Fury C Hick I Shepard Fourth Row I Griswold I Phelon N Gowley I Nickels A M Fredericks M Hoffman M Bennett l Reynard C Kelly S Buck D McNamara Second Row: T O'Keefe, M.
