These principles have been grouped together under the name democracy. At first, it appears that when we use this word we mean government by consent of the majority, and indeed this is one phase of democracy. But if we were to stop at this point and proceed to put this into effect, we would find that, by itself, government by the majority is rather a meanings less thing, being subject to passions of all kinds and definitely not progressive, Long ago, some words were spoken by a man who was probably one of the greatest statesmen who have ever lived. He was not an elaborately versed politician or a great orator, he was just a man of the people. The words government of the people, by the people, for the people will live in history just as will the man's name. These ten words are probably the closest anyone has ever reached to a complete definition of democracy, But again even these words fall ju t short of their mark lt seems to me that democracy is something more than a political classification lt transcends the boundaries of a mere form of government lt is a spirit not of one man but of all men it is the personal and sacred trust of every individual and as such it is a thing to be treasured and guarded with one s life blood if neces sary LAURENCE ANGELONl 4 2 ,Qi Caine ,QOH 6!l'llgLf Cgzar The midnight was clear Christmas quietness reigned over the city Here and there was the necessary activity which a country at war carries on day and night ln ward 7C a young soldier named Christian lay in his hospital bed lt was a regulation hospital bed Tnere wasnt an operating room or many of the other th ngs v hich a hospital should have it served its purpose There were many kinds of men in there young men olc' men men without legs men witlsout arms men with their bodies half torn apart mangled be yond recognition fighting pai as Christian was and struggling even harder than he to outwit death Every man in the hospital would gladly have given another limb of his body to live but not Christian' Curiously enough he couldn t think of life as precious As he lay there in his bed the strains of lt came upon the midnight clear That glorious song of old drifted into the ward The air raid alarm screeched the ward fell into darkness but the song continued Frc'n a gel bending near the earth To odch thei 'iarps of gold on thr arth good will to men lro heaven all graciou king e v or'l1n olemri tillne a 'ea t' e ar e in An oat' e ca ed C r tan s lps lt was that deaf and blind fellovl in GB Q' course the darkness meant nothing to him nor had tne alarm for he hadnt 'icara it bt ll cou'dh t orneore hut ldirn up' lt was pure mockery' 1 cnlf lt: C e pa e C5193 auie r , t eed fe w or X e nay 'iever pray again' came from the mouth of the young officer who had more grit but le s body than any man in the ward . . Many more of us, I think, have no definite ideas as to rust how it will be run, but know that something will have to be different if wars are ever to cease. Perhaps some of us, when we read of this group of men and women or that group of young people holding a discussion about how we must make this world a better place after the war or other related topics, know that this is a good thing, but yet have a vague, uncomfortable feeling fl was about to say a cynical feelingl about its ever doing any good. Maybe, even though we see that a unlon of the peoples of the world is what we must have, We are afraid that this is too idealistic and will never work, We are afraid that it is human nature to fight wars, that we always have fought and always will fight them. Perhaps that is the fear that is making us a little unsure about this ' better world after the war . lf we have this idea, we are defeated before we start. We've got to believe those wonderful things people call ideals with our hearts as much as with our minds. They arent merely beautitul thoughts that are lovely to think about sometimes, theyre firm, concrete convictions that we must make our life if we are to live really live life to the fullest ounce lf we love them and live them deeply every day they will determ ne how the world will be after the war PEGGY CRAMER 42 Ul'lJUl The sun sinks low that once soared high As an eagle soars in the morning sky And the deep dark lies like a death web pun Twixt the rising moon and the setting sun Our lives shall fade like the setting sun Sleep is the balm when day is done And we shall walk where the web is spun No dawn shall be ours rust the setting sun EDWARD SCHULTZE ELL U ji.
