She wondered if Heaven were llke that The shadows deepened from rose to purple to black the stars peered out and Sally Ann alone and melancholy began her nightly vigll Over what was she watching? Over the dead past with its joys and over the future ID which she could see only pain and sorrow The present she did not thmk about it was sufficient in itself The interminable hours dragged dully by a slight breeze ruffled the leaves one by one the birds awakened and poured forth their loyous matins the scent of food was wafted out on the air the morning sounds mingled in a gentle harmonv and the sun rose The laborers came down the road whistling and singing They seemed to be very much excited about something chattering and gossipmg as they shuiiled along in the thick dust One word leaped out of their conver sation and struck Sally Ann like a tongue of flame burning its way into her memory It was a simple Word of one syllable but It was one which she had heard much m her younger days Merely the one word Barre For a moment her heart sang she forgot her mental shackles that one word rejuvenated her whole spirit Then the old pressing weight settled down once more and her eyes grew dull and lusterless An old whlte haired man stopped patted her gently mumbled a few kmd words and passed along down the road just a few words maybe six or seven but they warmed the heart of the love starved dog and bright ened her whole day The cause of all the excitement came down the road as he passed Sally Ann he glanced casually at her When he had passed a little beyond her he wheeled and walked back He stood looking at the old dog as though trying to recall something then he walked thoughtfully up the flag walk and knocked at the manse door Mrs Lancy answered his knock and for several moments they stood talking about the laborers and their only half interested in the subject under discussion and of having some thing on his mmd which he would rather talk about After a few mo ments he said I thmk I recognize the dog out front Is she yours? Do you know where she came from? Is her name Sally Ann?
