The last score was a four yard plunge. On Sept. 12, a tough Flint River Wildcat team came to Centennial Stadium. At the end of the game it turned out to be a 6-6 tie. The first score came on a 43 yard scoring drive when Lee Bostick found Todd Yates in the end zone for a five yard T.D. pass. The point after was missed. With the 3rd quarter almost gone, Flint River Quarterback Tommy Man- ning dived from one yard out and scored. An extra point try was ruined when the snap was rolled to the holder. In Westwoods first region game, the Wildcats came out victorious as they beat the rugged Brookwood Warriors 7-0. In this game the Warriors out did the Wildcats in rushing 89 yards to the 59 for the Wildcats. Before the game. Coach Graham Lowe told his players if they held the team to a 100 yards they would win, and so they did. The only score came when Chip Smithwick returned a 24 yard-punt to the 48 to set up the winning drive in the 3rd quarter as Lee Bostick dashed 12 yards for the Wildcat's only score. On Sept. 26, the Southland Raiders came to Centennial Stadium. The two teams were undefeated and both were ranked no. 2 in the state in their respective regions. Westwood surprised the Raiders by jumping to a 7-0 first quarter lead as Dand Padgett recovered a fumble and ran 43 yards for a 1st quarter score. With 11:51 left till halftime, Southland running back, Eddie Watson, scampered for a 40 yard T.D. to tie the game with :27 seconds left on the score board. Lee Bostick ran 11 yards for a 14-7 halftime lead. When the two teams came back out the Cats held the Raider’s offense, but with 10:48 left in the game, Eddie Watson picked up a Wade Hall fumble and ran 40 yards to tie the game at 14-14. On Oct. 3, Westwood played their big rivals, the Raven- wood Red Raiders from Meigs. In that game Craig Chamb- liss scored 1st as he plunged one yard for the T.D., and when the 2nd quarter was almost finished, Wade Hall ran a 48-yard punt return to take a 14-0 halftime lead. When the teams came out after the half, Ravenwood drove 70 yards and Ricky Martin found Scott Connell for a 6 yard T.D. strike. Then the Wildcats came back with a 53 yard drive and Chambliss scored again from 4 yards out. In the final quarter. Wade Hall scampered for 21 yards into the end zone and Chambliss closed out the scoring assault with a 2 yard run. In the sixth game of the season the Cats traveled to Riverview. After a hard fought first half, the Wildcats came out after halftime and blasted the Vikings 41-7 in a non- region game. Our first score came when Michael Lodge threw a 42-yard T.D. pass to tight end Todd Yates. Then Riverview scored its only score when Bubba Horne hit Van Griffin for a 23 yard T.D. pass. Westwood then ran all over Riverview as Craig Chambliss had a 1yd run, Todd Yates caught another pass by Lodge from the 12, and Wade Hall ran for a 52 yard T.D. In the fourth quarter. Coach Lowe sent in the 2nd and 3rd strings as Yale Whigham, the placekicker, ran 19 yards for a T.D. and Kirk Chamblss ran a 60 yard T.D. After a big win over Riverview the Wildcats came home for homecoming to play the Tiftarea Panters. This game meant a lot for the football team and the coaches since it was X 104 a region game. Westwood blasted the Panthers 41-14 for the win. Wade Hall was the first to put the Cats on the board with a 38-yard T.D. run, and then 2:00 min. later ran a 60 yard punt return for a 13 0 lead. Michael Lodge went 25 yards for the 3rd T.D. and a few plays later Chip Smithwick set up a 30 yard T.D. run by Wade Hall. The next time Chip's interception went for a 35 yard T.D. In the 3rd quarter Gary Royal put more points on the board when he ran 83 yards for the last score. Then the 2nd and 3rd strings went in and Tiftarea scored their only points in the 4th quarter. Scott Jones ran from 4 yards out and Leon Brunty ran it in from one yard out. On Oct. 25, a powerful Knight's team came to Camilla and the Wildcats held a 21-0 halftime lead. They went on to win 21 -14. The Wildcats scored all their T.D.s in the first half of play as the Cats drove 75 yards and Lee Bostick plunged from one yard out. Jamie Sullivan's fumble recovery on the Knight's 7 turned into another T.D. as Wade Hall ran it in from the 6 yard line. For the Wildcats last score Micheal Lodge found Todd Yates in the open and hit him for an 8 yard T.D. When Deerfield came out after the half, they drove 38 yards and Jimmy Webb found Ted Dabrowski for a 16 yard T.D., and in the last quarter they marched 64 yards for the last score as the Cats held on to another victory. With two region games left in the season the Cats went to Pineland to play the Eagles. There the Cats rolled to a easy 33 0 win over the Eagles. Westwood scored first with a 35 yard T.D. by Wade Hall, and then with only 2:00 gone in the second quarter Michael Lodge found Todd Yates for a 6 yard T.D. This duo got it together again and this time Lodge threw to Yates for an 18 yard T.D. In the final quarter Lee Bostick scored on a 5 yard gain. The final game of regular season was against Westbrook. A win by the Cats meant Region 1A Champs. A loss meant a 3 way tie with Westbrook, Brook wood, and Westwood. When the last quarter was over the score board read Westwood 41-Westbrook 12. We were region champs. In the first quarter Michael Lodge found Todd Yates for a 16 yard T.D. Bostick came back and scored from 1 yard out and roared right back with a 53-yard dash for another score. Wade Hall took a 73-yard punt return for a T.D. and Craig Chambliss scored from 1 to give the Wildcats a 34-0 halftime lead. When the two teams came back out. Westwood’s Gary Royal scored the Cat's last score as he ran 49 yards for a T.D. In the 4th quarter Westbrook scored their T.D. s when Bill Morgan ran from 5 yards out and Robert Bruce picked up a blocked punt and ran it for a 45-yard T.D. as the Wildcats regained the Region 1A Championship. After winning Re- gion, the Cats went to the State playoffs. Their first opponent was Baker from region 2A, a strong football team. In that game the Cat's came from behind and beat the Bruins 21-7 to go on to the Semi-finals. The Bruins were first to score as Quarterback Tony Thompson ran four yards for a 7-0 lead and went into the locker room with a 7-0 lead at halftime. When the teams came back out. the Cats scored late in the 3rd quarter as Craig Chambliss ran for a 3 yard T.D. In the fourth quarter, Chambliss scored from one yd. In the 4th quarter Lee Bostick threaded his way up the middle for a 25 yard T.D. for a 21-7 win. This win set up a rematch against Gatewood in the Semi-Finals. This team beat Westwood in the State Championship 2 years ago, 13-14. 105 106 J.V. FOOTBALL Front row, left to right: manager Lynwood Griner, Wey Rooks. Football team was a suc- cess with their new head football coach, Randy Yonz. The Wildcats season started out with a depressing loss to Riverview by 2 points as the score was 28 to 26. Then the Wildcats bounced back as they beat South West Georgia 24 to 6 and Westbrook 34 to 0. In our second encounter with Westbrook, we lost by 2 as the score was 16 to 14. After defeating Pineland 26 to 0 and Raven - wood 8 to 0, ending the season with a 8 to 6 win over Brookwood as the Wild- cats racked up a 5-2-0 winning season. US THEM Riverview 26 28 S.W.G.A. 24 6 Westbrook 34 0 Westbrook 14 14 Pineland 26 0 Ravenwood 8 0 Brookwood 8 6 108 STATE On Nov. 21 the Gatewood Gators came to Centennial Stadium This flame decided who would be playing in the state Championship The Cat's used a strong defense to stop Gatewood s big running back Dal Haupc to win 25-14. In the first quarter a bad snap by the center to the punter of Gatewood got the Cat’s in good field position on the Gator s 10 yard line Then two plays later Wade Hall ran a 7 yard T D. to give Westwood a 7-0 lead. In the second quarter Dal Haupt did back-to-back fake reverses for gams of 19 and 11 yards. Then fullback Rip Rotter broke loose for 44-yards for a score They went for two and got the score and it was 7-8 Because of a forest fire, which brought smoke into the stadium, the game was moved to Webb Memorial Stadium at Deerfield in Albany, where the Cat's blasted the Gators. The Cat s got their second score when Dana Padgett recovered a fumble on the Gatewood 24-yard line, and two plays later Micheal Lodge found Todd Yates in the open for a 7 yard T.D When the Cat's got the ball again Lodge threw to Gary Royal for a 48 yard T D strike and the Cat’s went in at halftime with a 22-7 lead. The Gator's scored late in the 4rd quarter on a 44 yard pass from the quarterback to Bubba Harper. The Wildcat's got Yale Whigham to come in to try a 41 yard field goal and he missed After the next series of plays he tried a 48-yard field goal which was g x d to give the Cat's commanding lead Gatewood s last attempt to score was halted by an interception by Micheal Lodge The Cats upset an 11-0 Gatewood Team State Finals' Flint River went on the board first when Quarterback Tommy Manning scored from 1 yard out and the point after was no good The score was 0-6. After the kickoff Westwood marched down the field to the 19. Quarterback Michael Lodge hit Todd Yates for 16 yards and two plays later Bostick scored from the 4 The score at halftime was 7-6. When the teams came back after halftime. Manning went to work again as he scored again to give Flint River a 7-12 lead. Westwood bounced back when Wade Hall went 68 yards to put Westw x d back in the lead 1J-12 In the final quarter the coach of Flint River sent in place kicker Mac McNair to try a 42 yard field goal The Wildcat s fans were yelling, watch the fake , because Flint River had faked two extra points When the ball was snapped it was no fake and the ball went right through the uprights to give the Flint River Wildcats the lead and finally the state championship as they won 14- 15. 109 GIRL’S BASKETBALL From left to right.
