o GIRLS' VARSITY BASKETBALL The 1980 Girls' Varsity Basketball Team finished their season with a long list of accomplishments and a record of 17-5. At the District Tournaments in Ishpeming, they defeated Negaunee in the first game by a score of 67-43. ln the District Finals, Ishpeming was beaten by a score of 67-43. In the District Finals, Ishpeming was beaten by a score of 53-42, making themselves the first girls' basket- ball team from Westwood to be District Champs. The season had many bright spots that helped to make it a super all-around year for the team. On October 9, they beat Norway, the 1979 Class D State Champs, by a score of 55-50. Their victory over Negaunee was a first as was the first victory over Ishpeming on their home floor. A record was set for consecutive wins by a 10-game winning streak. But the top of the season was the District Cham- pionship which is the first ever in Westwood's history, and will set the goal for future girls' teams. Coach Ghiardi commented about the season and the team, This season adds up to the best l've ever had coaching. Besides having the best record ever and winn- ing the Districts l found the girls very coachable and dedicated to achieve the very best. Everyone became very close during the season, and we really formed a strong team to work together toward the top. The attitudes and feelings of the girls made the season just as worthwhile as the winning record did. l hope this season sets the tone for a future dynasty of Westwood District Champs. And according to our very own poet, Miss Ftizzardi, In the end, there is only one must, and that is to make ANOTHER ONE BITE THE DUST! Troy Mattson Kevin Millimaki BOYS' VARSITY BASKETBALL The 1980-81 Varsity Boys' Basketball Team had an excellent season. Their overall record was 22-2, the best record ever at Westwood. They won the Mid-Pen Conference Championship, and were the first runners-up to the U.P. Championship. Other team honors were a third ranking in the state for Class C, second ranking inthe U. P. for Class A-B-C, and they also had a new winning streak record of 14 wins. Mr. Dieterle had these comments about his team: We had an ex- cellent season. l thought the team played well together and had a lot ot fun. They gave it their best effort every time they played on the floor.
