When Homecoming rolled around in our Freshman year, our class pulled together to win the PEP jug, showing just how powerful a Freshman class can be. We were the first class in the history of WHS to claim such an honor as freshman. Something to be proud of! In February of 1978, we chose the first sweetheart couple for the class of '81 during the Winter Carnival. They were Dave Lakanen and Lori Kjellman. Who would have guessed that three years later the same couple would be chosen again as Homecoming King and Queen? As our Freshman year came to a close, Westwood held its first Spring Thing , the start of another tradition at WHS, just as the Winter Carnival has become. We all have a lot of good and a few bad memories of our Freshman year, but we all made many good and lasting friends, friends that year, we also lost a very dear friend, Kenneth Eckloff. Sophomore Year As Sophomores, we had climbed one step of the ladder and gained some authority over the next class of new Freshmen. Though we lost the pep jug to the senior class dur- ing Homecoming Week, our class continued the spirit that we were now known for, by giving the seniors a run for their money in the girls' flag football game. The class of '81 girls made it to the final game, but after a long, hard game fell to the class of '79. But we did not fall easily. The 1979 Winter Carnival was cancelled when we were Sophomores because of a snow day, but the basketball game and the dance went on as planned with Lee Hamari and Robin Lawry as our Sophomore Sweetheart couple. 32 seniors Our Spring Thing was also called off due to al of funds that year, but all in all our Sophomore y was a success and we were ready to beco Juniors. There are many things that we will s forget about our first two years at Westwood. but us always remember our good friend Bill Wood, we lost when we were Sophomores. Junior Year As we entered our Junior year at Westwood, found that many things were changing very quic We were now in the Junior-Senior hall, taking har semester long classes and preparing for the fut The year started out on the right foot as the clas '81 once again claimed the pep jug dur Homecoming Week. Many feel that we should h also claimed first prize in the hall decorating cont but we had to settle for last place after being acc ed of copying a hall theme from a previous year. As Valentines Day rolled around, the honor Sweetheart was bestowed on Dave Deloria Jackie Semmons. Winter Carnival was another s cess, even though our time outside had b shortened by Mr. Uitto and Mr. Bobula. HISTORY When our Junior year was coming to a close, any of us found that it was time to start preparing r college by taking the ACT test. Time was passing ickly now and soon we would be Seniors. We were oving up in the world, for soon it was graduation We had waited our turn and finally it was time take charge. ln June of 1980, many of the Junior dressed in their finest to hold the hoops and the class of 1980 farewell. Our Junior year was definitely a year to be It was a year of hard classes, lots of and papers, and quite a few parties. As of us will remember, the Rez and Black Falls were very popular places. Year September 1980 and we're Seniors at last. We traveled a long way to get there, but we had it. Finally there was no one above us, and were three classes below us. Had we really that small when we were Freshman? Sandy Hebert had taken over as Student Council for the Class of '81 with Cathy as President, Corinne Ftintamaki as Vice-President, Cheryl Frederickson as Treasurer, and Lori Kjellman as Secretary. When Homecoming rolled around for the last time for us, our class once again showed its spirit by win- ning the Pep Jug for the third and final time. As seniors, we also had the hard choice of choosing the Homecoming King and Queen. After much thought by the student body, Dave Lakanen and Lori Kjellman were crowned. Their court consisted of Dave Deloria and Sue Anderson, Lee Hamari and Amy Luke, and Jim Scott and Judy Baldini. Though we lost our Homecoming game to Iron Mountain, everyone had a good time at the dance with High Street as our band. Before the fall of 1980 turned in to winter, our boys' cross-country team had won the U.P. Cham- pionship and the girls' basketball team won the District Championship and achieved the best record in the history of Westwood girls' basketball teams with 17 wins and 5 losses. As winter came, Westwood held on to its reputation of having a fine boys' basketball team also. Now that the reality of graduation was beginning to hit, many people were busy applying to colleges and for scholarships, and deciding on the future careers. We only had a half of a year of high school left. Time was going by faster than expected. As winter was slowly leaving us and spring came, we were all excited for graduation. Our last Prom had gone by, and we had our Senior Banquet and the day consisted of a few classes and graduation prac- tice. Only a few more days and another chapter of our lives would be over. On the night of graduation there was a mixture of emotions. As we got ready, there was much laughter and tears, but as the ceremony started, everyone was quiet, deep in their own thoughts. lt seemed like just yesterday that we were Freshman looking for- ward to a new school. ui seniors 33 Ciirws Pefsz: Ciafzm Ragvflaz 3iffQZl 7' C ' 'B fx T X X f , 'W .f ' ,N 1 EQ? 1 5 W . A Skeleton Walks was the first play of the season, the uspense comedy delighted everyone nd set the tone for the rest of the plays during the year. The children enjoyed their special play, King Midas and the Golden ouch , and learned from the message it gave: Don't be greedy! Music fans had their treat with the musical comedy, Bye-Bye Birdie This exciting musical had many humorous moments and left the audience with a good feeling. Overall the 1980-81 season set the standard for future plays of the same caliber at Westwood High School. 4' li CLASS SWEETHEARTS i Q . It is a tradition at Westwood to have dress-up days throughout the whole Winter Carnival week. This year we had dress-up day, wild west day, toga day, T-shirt and jeans day, and of course, red, white, and blue day. Just before the start of Winter Carnival week, each individual class got together to pick their sweethearts. When Friday rolled around, we had our annual Teachers vs. Seniors games. This year the teachers were victorious in both the boys' basketball game and in the girls' volleyball game. That night the Westwood-Iron Mountain game was won by us with a score of 61-52. The class Sweethearts were introduced during half-time of the game and there was a dance honoring them afterwards. All in all, the Winter Carnival week was another success and a good time for everyone. 84 winter carnival V PROM '81 Top Left: Deb Farley, Todd Hilliker Top Right: Tina Mattson and Norman Pantti Lower Left: The Grand March participant LORI DALPRA AND DAVE DELORIA 1980 PROM KING AND QUEEN ,M , The student Council had a good year planning events for the school. V G ff! o GIRLS' VARSITY BASKETBALL The 1980 Girls' Varsity Basketball Team finished their season with a long list of accomplishments and a record of 17-5. At the District Tournaments in Ishpeming, they defeated Negaunee in the first game by a score of 67-43. ln the District Finals, Ishpeming was beaten by a score of 67-43. In the District Finals, Ishpeming was beaten by a score of 53-42, making themselves the first girls' basket- ball team from Westwood to be District Champs. The season had many bright spots that helped to make it a super all-around year for the team. On October 9, they beat Norway, the 1979 Class D State Champs, by a score of 55-50. Their victory over Negaunee was a first as was the first victory over Ishpeming on their home floor. A record was set for consecutive wins by a 10-game winning streak. But the top of the season was the District Cham- pionship which is the first ever in Westwood's history, and will set the goal for future girls' teams. Coach Ghiardi commented about the season and the team, This season adds up to the best l've ever had coaching. Besides having the best record ever and winn- ing the Districts l found the girls very coachable and dedicated to achieve the very best. Everyone became very close during the season, and we really formed a strong team to work together toward the top. The attitudes and feelings of the girls made the season just as worthwhile as the winning record did. l hope this season sets the tone for a future dynasty of Westwood District Champs. And according to our very own poet, Miss Ftizzardi, In the end, there is only one must, and that is to make ANOTHER ONE BITE THE DUST!
