' . ' , ' . ' .. : ' • ' ■■■ ' A devoted educator is someone who not only pushes his or her students to perform to the best of their abilities but also someone who is always willing to listen to a student ' s concerns and ideas. Such a teacher is ready to lend a hand and put in those valuable extra hours helping students in both academic and extracurricular areas. This person works diligently and often goes unnoticed and unrewarded. A true teacher is one who feels satisfied merely in knowing that he or she has done the best job possible to insure that the students receive the high- est quality education both inside and outside the classroom. This teacher is the loudest fan at Pow- der Puff games, always prepared to hose down a car at a Senior Car Wash, an unbi- ased referee for Volleyball Tournaments, the busiest hostess at both the Senior Class Breakfast and the Banquet, quick on the draw with the key to the School Store, technical director for all Lip Syncs, stand-in Broadway director for the Senior Class Play, poster-painter, organizer, in- novator, FRIEND. Yes, we certainly kept her busy, but she undoubtedly has been one of the best Senior Class Advisors ever known to Westwood High School. So, it is with much fondness and extreme gratitude that we, the Class of 1987, dedicate OREEN YEARS to MRS. CAROL ROSENQARTEN! THIS ONE ' S FOR YOU! ' ■ ' ?. ' ■ ' ■■■■■ i-n. r:Kl?J ■■-,-•■ vitsmgop H Principal ' s Message TO THE CLASS OF 1987 As the Class of 1987 concludes an entirely successful senior year, I would like to congratulate the officers, members of various class com- mittees and, indeed, the entire membership of the class. The class established an enviable reputation for many successful activ- ities, incredible fund-raising powers, good spirit and dedication to the welfare of the school. For all these reasons, I am sure the administration and staff of the school will long remember you and can but hope suc- ceeding classes will model their activities upon yours. May I wish all of you every success as you move on to new educational or occupational activities. I am sure you will bring the same qualities to bear on the problems presented by these activities as you have on the many facets of your high school experience. Yours very truly, Phillip F. Flaherty Vice Principal ' s Message ■ My congratulations and best wishes to the Class of 1987. You have good reason to take pride in the excellent spirit and strong leadership consistently exhibited these past four years. The strong char- acter and numerous contributions of the entire Class have established an enviable reputation. Close relationships between staff and students have led to lasting friendships and prepared you well for the challenges that lie ahead. You successfully grasped the numerous opportunities available at W.H.S. and it is my sincere hope that you will use these to achieve growth, happiness and success in the future. I appreciate your support and urge you all to preserve the friendships of your school years and become active alumni. AGE QUOD AQIS Charles W. Flahive Vice-principal Class President ' s Message I would like to thank you, my fellow classmates, for giving me the opportunity to serve as your President. I ve had a great deal of fun, and I hope you did too. We ' ve made our marks at Westwood (some darker than others), how it is time to move on and make our presence felt elsewhere. I wish each and every one of you the very best throughout college, work, and life. Thank you and Qod Bless. (Hope to see ya in five!) David L. Both men are always quite accessible to the student body and always willing to listen to students ' ideas and questions. The Class of 1987 wishes to sincerely thank Mr. Flaherty and Mr. Flahive for an outstanding high school experience which will have a major impact upon our future lives. Principal Phillip F. Flaherty Assistant Principal Charles W. Flahive May I have your attention please . . . Very little could be accomplished at WHS without the dilligent work of the secretaries in the front office. These women do a great deal for faculty and students alike. For all of the little things that they did for us which added up to a whole lot of work, the Class of ' 87 thanks these truly caring women. Mrs. Cassandra MacDonald Mrs. Eileen Kallenberg Mrs. Patricia McDargh 17 M To be or not to be . . What is the question? „ J Dr. Terrence Earls, Chairperson Miss H. Joan Dillon Despite constant competition from MTV, the En- glish Department, headed by Dr. Terrence Earls, introduced us to the classical entertainment of Shakespeare and Cummings. Through sometimes comical and often revealing manuscripts for Mr. Chatterton ' s creative writing course, students learned more about themselves and each other. The dynamic instruction of Miss Dillon, Mr. Man- cox, and Mr. Milan challenged AP students as the two-year preparation for the exam continued. The Class of 87 thanks each member of this staff for four years of support and guidance. Mrs. Jeryl Barraza Mr. Michael Milan 20 Miss Stephanie Shute Mr. George Mancox Mrs. Frances Petrakos Mrs. Gail Mayes Miss Elizabeth Mclntyre 21 + b2 = c2 Mr. James Pender, Coordinator Mr. Raymond Kodzis Mr. Richard Margreaves 1986-87 was another challenging year for Westwood math students. Under the guid- ance of Mr. James Pender this department strengthened basic skills while introducing new material. In Mr. Rooks classes, he asked the questions and students an- swered, replacing lectures with often active discussions. Mr. Kodzis ' jokes, Fischler ' s ex- pressions, and Miss Bolles humor added life to algebra, geometry, and analysis. Mr. Hargreaves prepared a few brave souls for the AP calculus exam and as always, the invaluable math seminar was everyone s fa- vorite hangout. These courses range in levels of difficulty so as to meet the needs of the entire student body. AP biology, physics, and chemistry are also offered to those students in search of the ultimate challenge. We will never forget molec. and Mr. Sarris constant reminders that, The clock is laughing at you, you bananas! , or Topalian s Toy Closet brimming with examples of the laws of physics. The History Department at Westwood High is particularly strong thanks to the dedicated fac - ulty which offers a wide variety of courses, their extra time and energy, and their friendship as well. Under the direction of its chairperson Mr. William Davis, the department successfully guided us through three or four tough years of social studies. Especially noteworthy were Mr. Stack ' s Ancient and Medieval History class, Mr. Beurman s Economics and Sociology classes, and the infamous junior year U.S. History courses with Miss Congdon or Mr. Brown. The Class of 1987 extends warm thanks and best wishes to the entire WHS History Department. Mrs. Elaine Doucette, Coordinator Mrs. Barbara Gray Mr. Manol Dhim itri Mr. William Ducheneau Ms AnnMarie Tieri Ms Lisa Loeb The Foreign Language Department, directed by Mrs. Elaine K. Doucette, had a busy year aiding students in mastering the fine art of speaking a new language and oversee- ing the activities of the Spanish and Trench Honor Societies. Senor Dhimitri ' s voice will forever seem to ring throughout the hallways, Hola Chica! Just as Madame Doucette will always be ready with a friendly, Ca va? Rounding out the Foreign Language curiculum at WHS are Mrs. Gray ' s German classes and and Miss Tieri ' s Latin course, both of which have been expanded during our years here. Although learning a new language is quite a challenge, this devoted staff has made it a fun and exciting experience for all involved. Mrs. Hollis Perry 27 Beauty Is In The Eye Of The Beholder Directed by Mr. Thomas DelSignore, the Art Department fosters a host of talented and creative individuals. With courses rang- ing from ceramics to AP Studio Art, this de- partment enables students of all abilities to partake of the visual arts. AP Art History is also offered for those of us who prefer con- templation to production. We thank the art staff for broadening our minds and for en- riching our years at WHS. Mr. Thomas DelSignore, Director Mrs. Judith DesPres Musical Notes The Music Department, headed by Mr James Qiurleo, Offers a wide variety of musi cal organizations including Concert Band Dance Band, Orchestra, Marching Band, Vo cal Ensemble, and South East Districts Also, established only last year, Chorale has become quite popular. These groups meet the needs of all who are musically inclined, and although many are extracurricular ac- tivities, the dedication of the participants keeps standards high. The Class of 87 ex- tends warm thanks to the Music Department. 28 Mr. James Qiurleo, Director Mrs. Maija Gray Sound Minds And Bodies Dr. Joseph Qearon, Director Mr. Russell Dowries Miss Elizabeth Rice Mr. Paul Tuccelli Ms Susan Peters Our Athletics and Physical Education Director, Dr. Joseph P. Qearon, has seen to it that during our four years at Westwood High we have been provided with a top notch Physical Education pro- gram. Popular activities have included team handball, aerobics, volleyball, and everyone s favorite, swimming. Our school nurse, Mrs. Clement, has always been a caring and helpful friend in times of need. From this staff we have learned the value of taking care of our bodies th rough exercise and a healthy lifestyle, about which we were taught in our sophomore Health classes. We thank these teachers for providing us with information which we can all utilize throughout our future years. Mrs. Elizabeth Clement, R.N. 29 Unlimited Resources Westwood High is especially luck to possess a well-equiped media center. Our librarians are always available to lend a helping hand in order to find some crucial bit of information for a research paper, and our media specialist does everything from preparing the PA system at pep rallies to filming various school events. The class of 1987 extends sincere thanks to this helpful staff. Home Is Where The Heart Is Even in the agee of the Yuppie, the Life Skills and Science Dept. remains as popular and as inexpendible as ever. Coordinated by Mr. Lawrence Rettman, the curiculum in- cludes courses in clothing,, foods, and child growth. The Class of ' 87 appreciates all that this department has taught us, and hopes to see the number of males involved continue to rise! Mrs. Mary Bishop Mr. Eugene Swezey Creativity At Its Best Mrs. Virginia McCoubrey Coordinated by Mr. Lawrence Rettman, the Industri- al Arts courses serve as a forum for students skill and creativity. Classes include wood working, graphics, electricity, and mechanical drawing. The students feelings of accomplishment and the practical skills learned are what make the courses so valuable. I Mrs. Joanne Arnold 1 30 Mr. Thomas Nelson Mrs. Lisa Bowler Mr. Lawrence Rettman, Coordinator wEHEfiHW ■ Home Of Our Future Tycoons The busy Mr. Lawrence Rettman is also Area Coordinator for the Business Dept. Mere, students learn such valuable skills as accounting, shorthand, word processing, and of course, typing. The courses provided by this department enable students to gain an excellent overall understanding of the various elements present in today s busi- ness world. The many practical skills taught by this caring staff will be of great help to all students whether or not they pursue a busi- ness-oriented career. Mr. Lawrence Rettman, Coordinator Mrs. Irene Dhosi THE TRIAL BALANCE the EOt-Aurr op ocsrrs CREDITS it THE LEDCE Mrs. Natalie Carey Miss Mary Conroy Wild In The Streets Undoubtedly the most exciting (hazardous?) class at WHS is Mr. Beurman ' s Driver Education course. Along with the rigorous classroom work, which encompasses not only how to drive a car, but also what makes the auto go, students are taught the many tricky manoeuvers which every MA driver must know. The dauntless men who journey out with these novice drivers include Mr. Ducheneau, Mr. Marx, Mr. Pender, and Mr. Rettman. We students (and our par- ents!) have truly appreciated the patience and perseverance of the Driver Ed. staff which taught us how to safely navigate the streets of Westwood and beyond. Mr. Beurman 31 HELP! The Guidance Dept., directed by Dr. William Pendell. deserves our special thanks for their indispensible help and patience. Amidst a sea of transcript re- lease forms and rushed schedule changes at the beginning of each school year, the members of the department re- main collected and organized, and never fail to give accurate advice about courses or to get college applications out on time. The Class of 1987 extends our grateful thanks to all the members of this vital department. Dr. William Pendell, Director Ms Cheryll Mogan 32 Ms Carol Armstrong Mrs. Donna Watkins, METCO Coordinator Mr. Thomas Hughes The Gifted Among Us Mrs. Susan Bomstein, Supervisor Mrs. Carol Rosengarten Mrs. Anna Runci Our school would be far from complete without the extremely special people who run our Special Needs programs. These car- ing, patient, and helpful individuals have al- ways been ready to lend that extra hand to those of us who needed a bit of added sup- port and encouragement. We very sincerely thank these teachers for their never-tiring devotion to their students. Mr. David Walsh Mr. James Cerullo Mrs. Ann Matteson Mrs. Jeanne Connolly Mrs. Christine Mullen Mrs. Mary Messina 33 To Those In Uniform For serving our breakfast and lunch and for unlocking our doors and picking up our messes, we warmly thank the Cafeteria and Custodial Staffs. It would be impossible to list all that these caring people have done for us througout our four years here, but things just would not have been the same without the Friday afternoon pizza or the friendly wave of a vacuuming custodian as we ran to catch the late bus. We truly appreciate all that you have done for us. 34 ■r FOOTSTEPS . . . Foosteps in the soft, wet sand cross the beach. Tread for nearly a score, they now are still Hesitant, they ponder the lofty hill. So many paths to take, destinies to reach. Please show me the way, they seem to beseech But no reply comes, the request to fill. A gentle breeze flows, causing a slight chill Whispering, Decisions one cannot teach. Slowly at first, the footsteps continue. Self-assured they run, they clamour, they fall Only to arise and go forth once more. Soon the path forks; scenery changes hue. Striving to reach their goals, they do not stall And along the way gain knowledge to store. The Student Council, led by co-presidents Chris Mart Be Lynn Elliot; vice-president Hope Irvine; treasurer Tom Smith and secre- tary Sue Spinale, had the honor of breaking in first year advisor Ms. Lisa Bowler. With her assistance we were able to sponsor the most successful Halloween dance in the past 5 years. This year due to the accredidation committee. Homecoming Week was altered. However, the usual school spirit was dem- onstrated and the students faculty en- joyed the week. We decided to try something new and gave a pep rally on a Friday night? Here the previously announced Homecom- ing Queen (Renee Rich) and our first Mr. Westwood (Dave Henderson) were intro- duced. We didn ' t have quite the turn out as we hoped for, but it was all in good fun. In closing, on behalf of the Student Council, I would like to thank Ms. Bowler for a job well done. We would also like to wish her good luck in the future years as Student Council advisor and that they may be as fun as ours was. STUDENT ADVISORY BOARD This year the student advisory board experienced one of its most successful years in its history. We were able to create a strong bridge between the student body and the school s officials. Combining our efforts with other school organiza- tions and Sue Spinale, we were able to expel the swimming re- quirement. Also we created a stu- dent questionaire to discover the views of the students. We had a remarkable response and many of those changes will be prevalent in the future. Furthermore, the SAB would like to thank Mrs. Petrakos whose hard work and dedication allowed us to enjoy a productive and successful year. 102 first row (L to R): J. Kerrigan, E. McCusker, L. Beth, Hope, Beth, and Sue led the Key Club in these worthwhile activities, and they wish to thank Mrs. Matteson for her time and effort in heading the club. NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLARS Congratulations to this year ' s na- tional Merit Scholars! Under President Tom Gearty, Vice President Dave Curley, Secretary Sue Spinale, and Treasurer Tom Smith, the Society worked hard and had lots of fun. Who can forget those Sunday ' s raking the cemetary or those Friday mornings waiting to see who would show up for the meetings? Special thanks to Miss Dillon for all the hard work and time she put in to make ri. ft. S. a success. With the help and support of Se- nor Hola Ducheneau and, later on, Senora Perry, the Spanish Hon- or Society enjoyed a very success- ful year that proved to be lots of fun also. Although senior officers dropped like Spanish flies, a lot was accomplished and mucho funds were raised through activi- ties like Bruins raffle sales, lolli- grams, and the ever-popular he- lado. Thanks again to Senor, Senora, and the many officers-and Buena Suerte from the departing seniors. SPANISH HONOR SOCIETY 104 first row (L to R): A. Coggins, C. Breen, B. Cronin. second row: M. STUDENTS AGAINST DRUNK DRIVING It was another successful year for Students Against Driving Drunk at Westwood High School thanks to Mrs. Manlon, S.A.D.D. advisor, and an enthusiastic membership. A new twist to the S.A.D.D. campaign was the Pepsi bumber stickers, which encouraged people not to drive while under the influence. The annual array of movies during prom season again heightened everyone ' s awareness to the dangers of drinking and driving. Talks with many famous, and not-so-famous drug users, some of whom are still serving jail sentences, were an added interest to the students this year. Good luck next year, and remember the meaning of S.A.D.D. 105 NO PARENTHESES No Parentheses, Westwood High School ' s only literary magazine, had a fabulous year. This year ' s issue was the first to have been done entirely on com- puter and, despite a few headaches, was one of the better issues. Mr. Milan, whip in hand, kept Editor-in- Chief Tom Qearty, Senior Editor Maureen Hogan, and Technical Producer Jodi Ril- ey on their toes. The hard work paid off as no Paren- theses sold out almost instantly. front row (L to R): H. Kranz, J. Riley, M. Hogan, T. Qearty. middle row: D. Leary, A. Maurici, S. Maxwell, back row: A. The coaching and preparation by coach James Pender were instrumental in the team ' s victories. The departing seniors, Stephen Buonopane, Aaron Proman, Scott Adams, Steve Segen- chuk, and Tom Qearty would like to thank Coach Pender for his dedica- tion and leadership. FRENCH HONOR SOCIETY The Societe Honoraire de Fran- cais spent another productive year inducting new members into this elite little group! Unfortunately, we also lost a few members. C est la vie, eh! Moleen and Linda perfect- ed their ceremony decorating skills and Bertil impressed all of us with his flawless accent. We de- parting members would like to thank Madame Doucette, Made- moiselle Tieri, and Madame Coffin for their efforts in re-founding the W.M.S. chapter of the Society and we wish the remaining members much luck and more activity. front row (L to R): L. After 3 long hours each Wednes- day night for 6 weeks of training, they were finally able to do the real counsel- ing ' - at the Jr. High. Everyone, after get- ting over nervousness anxiety (and a few tough little 7th graders), will agree that this new program at W.H.S. was chal- langing, fun and a great learning experience. 109 BOYS ' GIRLS ' STATE Student representatives Dave, Cath, Chris. Jerry, Rob, Maureen, Reegs, and Amy spent a week at local colleges learning the basics of govern- ment on a local and state level. The several hundred partici- pants were divided into political parties and then into towns and cities. Mock elections were held for town and city officials as well as state positions such as governor and attorney general. The Westwood reps, returned home with their heads filled with new knowledge, bodies weary with exhaustion, and their address books overflow- ing with new names. front (L to R): C. Breen, Q. Hart, C. We will never forget Sue ' s whining, Cathy ' s speed-reading, and, most of all, the announcers dedication and ability to get to school before 8:00. no  «nrH CHORALE For the second consecutive year, the Westwood High School Chorale gathered many energetic and talented students to- gether on Wednesday nights for two hour practice sessions. Under the instruction of a very patient di- rector, Mrs. Maya Gray, the Chorale sang at the school ' s Winter and Spring Concerto, performed for the graduating seniors on Class Day, and received an Excellent rat- ing at the Creative Arts Workshop Showcase. The Chorale would like to thank Jennifer Keller and Jeffrey Domina, the piano accom- panists, for a great job. Congratulations to Jennifer who was chosen as the pianist for the Southeast District Chorus. Thank you Mrs. Gray! VOCAL ENSEMBLE Consisting of only 6 voices and 1 pianist, the Honors Vocal Ensemble broke away from the traditional Double Quartet not only in the number of students, but also in style. The Vocal Ensemble sang for members of the Museum of Fine Arts, the guests of Mr. Cedrone ' s retirement party, and for the French National Honor Society induction. The Vocal Ensemble consisted of sopra- nos Debbie Najjar and Denise Pinel, altos Susan Molloy and Amy Sullivan, baritones Bill Carribis and Chris Reardon and pianist Joyce Bain. This year the tour took place throughout the State of Maine. The Dance Band members were housed by local students in exchange for the musi- cal entertainment they brought to many Maine residents. The trip was successful and rewarding as the Dance Band brought a little culture to the rural areas of Maine. PERCUSSION FRONT ROW: B. Poreda, M. Qiambanco, D. Merrill, N. McQee; 2nd ROW: C. This year the marching band placed first in four out of its five competitions, and placed third in the Mew England Scholastic Band Associa- tion finals, receiving awards for best percussion and best drum major. Under the direction of Jim Qiurleo, the march- ing band practices up to twenty hours a week preparing for football games, parades and most importantly - competi- tions. Their very sucessful season has left them optimistic towards the future. 114 w HOnOR SOCIETY ACTIVITIES The honor societies at WHS had anoth- er active year in ' 87. SHU, under the di- rection of Mr. Ducheneau and Mrs. Perry, kept busy with raffles and ice cream sales, and now many of us know how to ask for our ice cream in Espanol! SHF, with guidance from Mrs. Doucette and Miss Tieri, helped make signs for the Foreign Language Fair and welcomed back Mrs. Coffin who spoke at the induction along with Mrs. Larkin. | J HS, lead by Miss 1 Dillon, spent an X X interesting year helping the Recreation Dept. spruce up Westwood. Members chopped, raked, sawed, and generally desecrated nature all around town. In order to fulfill their crucial hours of service, riHSers were often also seen behind the counter of the school store and tutoring other students. GREEN YEARS STAFF This year ' s yearbook is a unique one! The staff consisted of a grand total of seven people. Editors-in-Chief John Barry and Linda Anderson spearheaded the production of Green Years ' 87, while Christine O Donnell contributed significantly with her typing. The yearbook process began quite late (around Christmas) due to ' contract problems ' ' and was not completed until late August. However, the time and effort put in will hopefully prove beneficial. Green Years ' 87 offers a few new twists and ideas that did not exist in previous yearbooks, new events covered include the Mr. Westwood High Contest, the very successful Lip Syncs, and the Sailing Club under th e guidance of Mr. Topalian. Original and creative pages include the Bloopers page and the newest section, A Look Back . A Look Back displays some of us in our freshman, sophomore, and junior years. We hope you enjoy these new sections. By looking at the biography section, one might come to the conclusion that it is incomplete; however, it is complete. It was made quite clear that all biographies had to be signed; however, some refused to, or forgot, and were therefore left out. The process of making a yearbook is, and was, a long one. Literally hundreds of pictures had to be sorted and numbered: Activities, Sports, Seniors, and candids. The ' best pictures are, we hope, displayed in this yearbook; however, there were countless other pictures. Some good, some funny, and, unfortunately, some of bad taste (?). We hope you enjoy our selection of pictures. The next step involved layout. Pictures had to be selected, cropped, blown-up, or shrunk-down. Headlines had to be created (30 pt, Style 47, All Caps), and tool lines added. The next step, or shall we say hardship, involved typing. A part of the yearbook that often goes unnoticed, but adds another dimension to the yearbook - typing (Copy A, 8 pt., Style 47). The last step, and probably the step that separates an average yearbook from a good yearbook, involves creativity. Tint a page, add a design, add a tool line, add a quote or type a line. The editors-in-chief undertook each of these steps, and Green Years ' 87had been completed. The yearbook is now in the capable hands of Jos- tens Printing and Publishing, and we hope our image of Green Years ' 87 has come true. Creating the yearbook has been a worthwhile experience, and we hope you enjoy Green Years ' 87. P.S. We would like to thank those people who took time out of their summers to help us with various sections of the book. We would also like to thank photographers Tom Qearty and Rob Fink - you guys made a difference. « t All of us in the Class of ' 87 were glad to make the acquaint- ances of Bertil and Marguarita. Bertil spent the entire school year with us and joined in our classes and also in activities such as tennis team and French honor society. Marguarita was only with us for a few months, but we were glad to welcome her to the Senior Banquet and other spring activities. Unfortunately, in June Bert returned to Germany while Marg went home to Co- lumbia; we will miss them, they enriched our school and our lives. After an outstandingly hard fought sea- son, the 1986 Westwood Wolverines Toot- ball Squad became the third team in the school ' s history to play football in December. After dropping the season s opener, the Wolverines, led by captains Rocco Ruggiero, Kevin McCoy, Mike LaCamera, and Dave Curley, captured nine consecutive victories to become the first team in the history of the school to go undefeated in the Tri-Valley League. GIMME A W SUPERBOWL At the Superbowl at Boston University, the Wolverines lost a close and bitter battle to Archbishop Williams by a score of 6-0. The team and its fans will always remember the Super- bowl, but they will also remember the exciting plays and victories that got them there — fake field-goal touchdown passes, the longest (98 yds.) offensive drive in the school ' s history, and the regular season-ending victory at home against Molliston in front of 5000+ fans. Under the leadership of president Dave Curley and intelligence of validictorian Steve Buonopane the Class of ' 87 had a remarkable year at W.fi.S. and will be a class never forgotten. HISTORY - CLASS OF ' 87 Freshman Year We were the Class of 1987, but the calendar indicated that it was still 1983. There were three years to endure before we could enjoy our senior status. We spent most of our freshman year getting lost in the halls, surviving first game days, and developing crushes on senior guys. Our class officers included John Barry, Rob Blomquist. Cheryl Muskins, and Karen Hagberg who did an excellent job doing whatever freshmen class officers do. During homecoming week we displayed our astounding school spirit by placing last in almost every category. Seated behind the band at the pep rally, we watched the football captains escort the queen and her court around the gymnasium. Hope Irvine was chosen as the freshman member of the court. We eventually found our forte in sports. Both Ed Kirrane and Bill Qrube were given varsity spots in hockey and Kevin McCoy and John Barry were called up to dress for Westwood ' s first Superbowl appearance. The girls basketball dynasty was assured successors with Lynn Elliott, Renee Rich, Mope Irvine, Jen Murphy, Mancy Rae, Laura Smith, Nancy McDermott, and Kelly West, newcomer Sue Spinale made her mark in the classroom as well as a member of the varsity field hockey squad. Laura Smith was an asset to the softball team, while Twisty Qogolak stunned us with her talents on the tennis courts. Although our beach trip to Horseneck was hampered by cold and cloudy weather, we made the most of the day by building some shaky pyramids. In June we looked forward to a relaxing summer and com- ing one step closer to senior year. So now we are the class of 1991 and freshmen once again. Sophomore Year Sophomore year, the in-between year. We were no longer freshmen, yet we still longed for upperclass status. Led by John Barry as Presi- dent, Ruthann Brawley as Vice President, Rob Blomquist as Treasurer, and Laura Smith as Secretary, we braced ourselves for the 84 85 school year. No longer in assigned studies, we now had to find creative ways to fill our ' free blocks. The librarians may never be the same. Now veterans of WHS, we could enjoy some of the tried and true traditions. Homecoming week featured Hat Day, Toga Day, 50 ' s Day, Clash Day and the ever popular Green Pride Day. The annual Halloween Dance was its usual success. Our sophomore year was dubbed The Year of the Champions ' as our Band, Football, Hockey, Girls ' Basketball and Tennis teams all had winning seasons. With all the excitement, we still managed to attend classes. Biology - the Sophomore Science - While Curley, Cleopatra, and the rest of the bananas laughed at the clock in Mr. Sams ' room 46, the rest of us rigorously studied for Mrs. Saltmarsh ' s class. Oral English was anoth- er favorite. We all really enjoyed the demonstration speeches, espe- cially the one about how to kiss. We all basically more or less ' took health. As the year came to a close, we headed to Nausset Beach for the beach trip. As always, it was another learning experience. Now we knew the definition of New England Weather. - ' When the last final exam was over, we jumped into summer knowing that we would no longer be underclassmen. Junior Year We began our junior year with great expectations. Under the guiding leadership of President John Barry, Vice President Rob Blomquist, Treasurer Kerry Roche and Secretary Caroline Keltey we were ready to meet the demands of our new found status as upperclassmen — whatever those might be. This was to be an important year for us, we were told. This was the one that counted, the one the college admissions offices looked at. Sadly no one had informed our teachers of this for instead of sympa- thizing with our plight they had the audacity to keep piling on the homework and the lectures — making junior year, academically, the most difficult yet, and causing us to finally begin to really see the extent of our upperclassmen obligations. ' ' It is at this point, however, that we must give a special thank you to our junior year U.S. History teachers, Miss Congdon and Mr. Brown. Without their calm, stable presence in the classroom and their gentle, relaxed approach to teaching we may not have made it through junior year. The daily forty minute lectures, the weekly papers, the debates, the little practice A. P. tests, just for fun , all gave us a reassuring feeling that our other classes had failed to provide. Mr. Brown ' s students were even lucky enough to be granted the privilege of taking the A. P. test. Those evening review sessions really helped — not to mention the ice cream at Maddie s afterward. The test itself was just a barrel of laughs — imagine three mind-boggling hours of essays and multiple choice questions all for the bargain basement price of forty- nine dollars. However we failed to realize that included in the price of admission was the support of two cheerleaders bearing tootsie roll pops, soda, and pep talks. Some students had such a good time they took four more A.P. ' s senior year. Yes, test ' ' was a four letter word to us in our junior year. First the PSAT ' s then the SAT ' s, then the SAT s again. You can never have too much of a good thing. Rounding out the academic year was Westwood High School ' s first annual Science Fair. Backed by the support of Miss Pufahl and Dr. Griffin, Westwood came up with some Noble Prizeworthy entries, whether it be an experiment with lower calorie donuts, laser beame (Nice job, Tom), or everyone ' s favorite —photosynthesis. On the extracurricular side of life, junior year was again memora- ble. Though, according to Channel 5, very few of us were capable of remembering anything. Yes, that was the year of the great drug abuse scandal. All the hype was over soon enough, however, and Westwood s students got to show themselves in a much more favor- able light when Good Morning America picked Westwood to be fea- tured in a prom fashion show. Sue Spinale, Beth DiScuillo, Kristen Lepri, Kerry Bender, and Carolyn Tassinari all looked lovely in their gowns, and the lower media center never looked better — trans- formed into a dance floor for the occasion. The real prom was just as eventful. The Junior Court was represented by Lena Cohen, Roberta Moore, Carolyn Jurkiewicz, and Dianne Runci. And so the year wound down to a close. And as we juniors (the third of our class who attended that is) reverently watched the seniors march out after Class Day we realized we were now seniors. We had a great deal to look forward to and a great deal to work on. Not the least of which was the sobering fact that we had only one short year left to practice that grueling graduation march. 172 i Senior Year As the summer drew to a close and our first years at W.H.S. began, we looked forward with mixed emotions. We felt both confidence and uncertainty. Because as Seniors we would have twice the responsibil- ity, yet triple the fun that we had ever had in our high school years. With Dave, Cathy, Rob, and Kerry leading the way, we felt sure that the Class of 87 would go out in style. The year got started on the right foot with a very exciting boy vs. girl Powder Puff Football Game. The hard fought game ended on a some- what unsettled note with the controversial No overtime call made by the referees. The game thus ended in a wishy-washy 6-6 tie. Some highlights of the game included the girls ' tremendous defense which was of course the cheese , the ankle ties of Jim Tunney and Bob Hubbell which spent more time untied than tied, and, of course, the cheerleaders who showed the best moves of the day. The next event for the Class of ' 87 was also the first in a long line of fund raisers, the ever-popular car wash. Unfortunately for those who brought their cars in to be cleaned, our seniors were not professionals. Another such fund raiser was the school ' s first-ever school store, which under the watchful eyes of seniors Tom Qearty, Scott Adams, Jim Sullivan and Nike Levine was extremly prosperous. In November, the Class of ' 87 was all Aces with a Thanksgiving and a Homecoming to remember. Homecoming week was belated this year in preparation for the big Holliston-Westwood Turkey Day foot- ball game, which would once again determine the league champion- ship, as well as a Superbowl berth. The week included Hat Day, Toga Day, Pajama Day, 50 s Punk Day, and of course, the ever-popular Green Pride Day. Towards the end of the week, the class held the first- ever Mr. Westwood High School competition as an answer to the Homecoming Queen. After a night of over-acting and careful ballot- ting, the senior class girls crowned Dave Henderson as Mr. W.H.S. Homecoming Week ended in a night-time Pep Rally to prepare for the Thanksgiving Day game, and Renee Rich took the honors as 1987s Homecoming Queen, with Hope Irvine and Stac Shanning on her court. As the climax of the week, our boys rolled over the Holliston Pan- thers to a well-deserved 13-0 Superbowl clinching victory. With the winter came heartbreak, as Westwood High s athletic teams suffered four near misses. The first coming as the girls volley- boll team lost a close game in the state finals, which was played at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. Then, on the following day, the foot- bail team was overpowered in the Superbowl by the huge Archbishop Williams. Next, the ever-powerful girls ' hoop team succumbed to de- feat after fighting their way deep into the state tournament. Westwood ' s final hope, the rough and tough hockey team, lost a tough one to Northeast Regional after travelling all the way to the state finals. Although these teams all lost in their big games, they will always be champions in the hearts of Westwood fans. New Year ' s Eve crash landed in Westwood with many wild celebra- tions, and when Christmas break came to a close our seniors brought themselves, as well as their headaches back to school. In January, the first of two lip-sync ' s took place. In each one Jim Sullivan saved the day with his incredible stereo system. In the first Dave Henderson once again took the victory syncing to Old Time Rock N Roll , while in the second victory honors went to a ragtime band of underclassmen. As February rolled around, so did the annual out of control London trip where some students got so out of control , they got to leave early! A few daring Westwood students danced their way across England and hob-nobbed it with the Brit ' s, and, of course, Roberta met Boy George. Upon their return, lippa-mania struck W.H.S. Soon it was spring, and many books gathered dust in senior lock ers, as the first cases of senioritis and Spring Break set in. For spring vacation, many Westwood students journeyed to Bermuda for some fun in the sun while other unfortunates stayed home to brave the baseball diamonds. Our seniors were well accounted for in all the chic clubs as well as both on and falling off their mopeds. As the vacation week drew to a close, our seniors tried to squeeze as much partying as possible into those final nights, and the flamin- go may never be the same. While we headed into the final months of our high school years, May 15th, Prom Night, rolled around, and the Lean On Me theme was very fitting as students bumped and leaned on one another all night on what had to have been the world ' s smallest dance floor. Marie Giambanco was crowned Prom Queen and her senior court consisted of Julianne Pinel and Nancy Sheppard. Before the night was officially over, many students had already left the Sheraton, and were on their way down the Cape for a wild Prom week-end which many would like to forget, but most can ' s remember. For all intents and purposes, our year had ended and only the formalities and traditions had to be carried out. Traditions such as a class prank. A few daring girls from ' 87 banded together to complete the most anti-climatic class prank in the school ' s history! Most stu- dents never even saw this masterpiece due to the crack team of janitors led by fast-Eddie Reed. The year came to a close as once again the Class beach trip was held on a wonderfully overcast day. While on Crane ' s Beach, students made the best of the time by braving the surf and playing football, wiffleball and volleyball (which is where Dano and Mike found areas of expertise). With the school year behind us, and our classes at Westwood High over, the Class of ' 87 would like to thank all the teachers who have tolerated us, as well as helped us, through the years, and especially Mrs. Rosengarten, who, as our Senior Class Advisor, did more for us than many will ever know. h Do You Remember When . . . 173 :V,i -T«.. ran DESTINATIONS mw Wife- VliW % msf Ca fir 4M «fi5fe « 1 %uss Scott Adams Linda Anderson Maria Antoniou Donna Bain John Barry Peter Bean Robert Blomquist Sean Bogue Michelle Brathwaite Ruthann Brawley Catherine Breen Kerry Buckley Stephen Buonopane Gregory Carlevale Laura Jean Carrabis Diane Carter Elizabeth Caruso Michelle Casavant Martin Castrechini Denise Chase William Scott Child Jennifer Chiricotti Jennifer Clark Philip Clarke Alissa Coggins Lena Cohen Karen Commane Amy Corcoran Robert Corlito Michelle Cox Elizabeth Cronin Kathleen Cronin David Curley Deirdre Curtin Stephen Dakin Faith Davey Susan Delaney Dan Dermarderosian Donna DeCenso Elizabeth DiSciullo Angela Dixon Cornell University Georgetown University Bridgewater State College Stonehill College Harvard University Philips Exeter Academy U.S. Military Academy University of Virginia Burdette Business School Assumption College Colby College Boston College Princeton University Boston University Central Connecticut College Bridgewater State College University of Mass., Amherst Johnson Wales College Stonehill College new Hampshire College Roger Williams College University of Dayton Fitchburg State College University of Lowell Duke University Dean Junior College northeastern University northeastern University Dean Junior College Mass Bay Comm.
