If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music he hears, however measured or far away. Henry David Thoreau It is easy in the world to follow the world ' s opinions; it is easy in solitude to follow our own; but the great man is he who in the midst of the crowd keeps with p erfect sweetness the independence of solitude. Ralph Waldo Emerson Do what you want to do Be what you want to be Look the way you want to look Act the way you want to act Think the way you want to think Speak the way you want to speak Follow the goals you want to follow Live according to the truths within yourself Susan Polis Schutz 5TVU UU We must not make the past the only light for the ensuing years. We all miss him greatly— in our prayers he will remain. —John Webster CLASS HISTORY ; - r 0! fr jL fl-3 V %s i FRESHMEN Our freshman year was one of great change for us. In September of 73, we arrived at the high school. Fresh out of junior high we were immediately amazed by our new- found freedom. Smoking was finally legal in the court-yard, music was provided in the mezzanine, and we even had studies that weren ' t assigned! We began building our treasury with a magazine drive that proved to be a great success due to the hard work of President Marilyn Reddish, Vice President Linda Fabiano, Secretary Katie Quynn, Treasurer Nancy Fabiano, and the entire Class of 1977. We hosted Harris Stylianou as our American Field Ser- vice guest from Cyprus that year, and the annual AFS In- ternational Dinner was established. In sports, our freshman year was a year of firsts. A new sport was introduced to Westwood High— soccer, and another new sports highlight destined to become a tradi- tion was Tuc ' s football camp. The girls also got into the football scene with Powder Puff Football , and although there were no victories, the team had a lot of fun and raised almost $100 for the AFS Club. Guys and Dolls , the school ' s second musical, proved to be a smashing success as for a short time we experien- ced the excitement of the Roaring 20 ' s. Freshman year was a fun one, but we must admit that after a long year of being at the bottom of the totem pole, we were happy to join the ranks as sophomores. SOPHOMORES Our sophomore year was full of fun and excitement. We also had an outstanding team of class officers— some of whom are still in office. For our President we had the one and only Steve Harrington, our Vice President was Linda Fabiano (she ' s the one with the dot). Then for Secretary we had Katie Quynn, ya ' ll know who we ' re talkin ' about— (she ' s the one with the funny accent). And last but not least, the Treasurer— Nancy Fabiano. We were really surprised at the outcome of this election because it was rumored that she was still in fifth grade math at the time?! Now for the list of exciting events: For a start we made some profit on candy sold at the basketball games. Then there was our well-attended Celtics game— We had an outstanding group of visitors: Tom Ellis and Len Berman from Channel Four News, and Father Robert Drinam, Member of Congress. Our AFS exchange student was Hans Lundkvist from Sweden. The school newspaper, Sacred Cheese, was awarded top school newspaper awards in the Northeast Tri-State Conference. Well, that was our sophomore year as we left for sum- mer vacation looking forward to becoming members of the upper class, and a JUNIOR. JUNIORS As we became upperclassmen more responsibilities were piled on our shoulders. We were hit with the New Deal Alphabet which consisted of N.M.S.Q.T ' s, S.AT. ' s, A.CT. ' s and T.A.P ' s. The majority of us spent at least one semester with Mr. Parker from whom we were taught the options of the automobile. Junior year we also wit- nessed the spreading of the Barry Cullen Westwood Lingo Epidemic. Take your beating Barry! Under the leadership of our female officers: President, Kerry Nee; Vice President, Linda Fabiano; Secretary, Paula MacDonald; and Treasurer, Nancy Fabiano, we ad- vanced from a threatening financial situation to one which was quite comfortable. We obtained much of our funds from the continued concession stands at the basketball games, candy sales and of course the persistent dues drives. As a result we took a class trip to Horseneck Beach. Our school musical was Oklahoma. The highlight of our year was the Prom, held at Blue Hills Country Club with the theme Knights in white Saturn. Steve Harrington ' s advertisement for a prom date evidently fell through. We were privileged to have hosted our AFS student Ewald Filler from Austria and Mari Tsuda from Japan. Leaving Westwood in the AFS program were Karen Moses, who traveled to Switzerland, and Bill Rogers, who spent a summer in Columbia. In sports we were awarded the Dalton Trophy for our outstanding athletic record; as the girls ' swimming, winter and spring track, and the basketball teams were all undefeated. With all this activity in the past and as the symptoms of senioritis began, we concluded the bicentennial year at Westwood High. SENIORS Senior year at last! We ' ve made it to the top. Four years ago as freshmen we would never have believed that it could finally happen, and so quickly. A closeness to each other which wasn ' t apparent in earlier years suddenly came together for the class of 1977. It ' s been our last year, and each of us has been determined to make it the best. The fall found many of us rushing to meet deadlines, as the sudden realization of college hit us. SAT ' s were frantically taken again and again, in an attempt to raise our scores. We enjoyed our last season of football, as Tuc and our senior boys put up a great effort against Holliston on Thanksgiving Day. We also enjoyed our first class ac- tivity — breakfast at Mary Hartigan ' s, which the majority of our class attended. As the winter rolled around, preparations began for the class play, Deadwood Dick. Our class had the largest turn-out ever for a senior play. Surrounded by fantastic barroom scenery, the true characters of many of our classmates emerged. Certainly the performances by Kerry Nee as La Paloma, and Greg White as Pong Ping will long be remembered. Steve Boyle and Peggy Atkins pulled through with parties in a near-desperate situation. 1977 was a big year for basketball at WHS. Both the boys ' and girls ' teams made it to the state tournaments, and the girls ' team broke a record by winning 73 straight games. Congratulations, also, to Nancy Fabiano and Steve Harrington who reached 1000 points in their careers. Perhaps the players were spurred on by shouts of F-0 and 3-5. As winter came to an end, the senior class saw its last musical, South Pacific. Memories of Duane Sullivan will stay with us for a long time! The banquet, with the theme Sunrise, Sunset was a great success under the direction of Mr. Beurman and Mr. Milan. The dance band sounded great as deserving seniors were awarded class superlatives. Later that night the Honolulu was grateful (?) for our patronage. April found many seniors living a day-to-day existence, as the rush to the mailbox began. Slowly the acceptances came in and we had to make decisions that would effect the next four years of our lives. We really knew we were seniors when we were measured for our caps and gowns, and as course selection sheets for next year were filled out without us. The boys vs. girls hockey game was a lot of fun for everyone as the girls finally tied the boys at 2-2. April also found a small group of seniors leaving the states and heading for Bermuda for a very restful vacation. Most seniors will agree that although the whole year has been great, that the past month of May has been the best. Shouts of Caring and We ' re out of here filled the halls early. We finally gained the finances needed for our activities through Linda ' s reacquiring the donut program, and the final collection of class dues. Our plans for senior skip day at Sandy Neck Beach were held off a week as we received snow in May, but it was a day to be remembered by all. (Some more than others). The next day ' s red eyes were definitely a result of too much study- ing. This year ' s prom was held at Sydney Hill Country Club, and the band was finally able to play the theme song, We ' re All Alone. Debbie Scibilia looked beautiful as our queen, as she and her court reigned over the night ' s ac- tivities. Another highlight occurred when Sylvestor Stallone entered our school, disquised as Ray Devasto. What a surprise when Ray won WVBF ' s Rocky look-a-like contest. The class of 1977 will always be remembered for its class pranks, including the day we entered the upstairs courtyard to find pumpkins representing each teacher, lined up along the roof. Our last class activity at Crane ' s Beach will long be remembered. Under sunny skies we ate lobster and chicken, while listening to great stereo sounds from Billy Cannata ' s speakers. A famous scene will always be Mr. Walsh being thrown into the water surrounded by 10 girls! This year our senior class was lucky enough to have three foreign students instead of just one, as in previous years. Ana Lucia Castro, Asa Svenson and Memo Gutierrez proved to be three of the friendliest members of our class. Our class would like to thank all those people who helped us to grow and learn during our four years at Westwood High School, and particularly this year we must thank Mr. Donald Beurman, who gave us his time and guidance, and never gave up on us; and our class ad- visors, who without them so many things would not have been possible. This year our officers were: Steve Harrington — President Linda Fabiano — Vice-President Katelyn Quynn — Secretary and Nancy Fabiano — Treasurer Now that our high school years are over, we can look back fondly on our memories and experiences, and hope that we ' ve learned enough about ourselves to handle what ' s ahead, — because the future is ours. The team, under the guidance of Coach Thwing and leadership of Co-Captains Steve Harrington and Todd McGrath, won the league championship for the first time in Tri-Valley competition. The squad qualified for the tournament for the seventeenth time in nineteen years. Among their greatest triumphs were the two victories over arch-rival Medfield and a thrilling 54-48 win over Holliston in the first round of the tournament. This year ' s team was comprised of mostly seniors. Tod and Steve were both selected to numerous All-Star teams. Steve became the fourth player in the school ' s history to score 1000 points. Carl Lindenmeyer and Gordie Hall provided the greatly needed muscle under the boards. Mike Bennet and Joe Tavalone started games and also came off the bench to provide additional scoring punch. Their shooting and quickness pulled out many victories for the Wolverines. Jeff North was the team ' s most consistent rebounder. The team had outstanding individual performances by such greats as: Peter Dressens, Don Stewart, Greg White, Peter Flynn, and Tom Lyndemeyer. The team fared well at the States and the New England meets, with performances by Don Stewart, who came in third in New England, Greg White, who came in fourth in New England, and Jay Messina, third in the class C States. The team would like to thank Coach Hargreaves for his outstanding contributions. First row, left to right: P. Condrin, J. Fannon, J. Scibilia, J. McLeay, G. White, P. Powell, R. Surrett, M. Ferry, M. The 1977 Girls ' Tennis Team had a very successful season under the direction of Coach Proc and Co-Captains Karen Moses and Lisi Sesnovich. The strength of the squad is best measured by its 14-2 record for the season. Nancy Procaccino became the number one singles player in the league when she defeated a tough Dover competitor. Senior Paula McDonald was surely missed when she was sidelined with a broken bone in her foot. The team missed her competitive spirit. As luck would have it, the tennis team drew a notorious Newton-North team for the first round of the State Tourna- ment and thus eliminated from further competition. The team thanks Mrs. Procaccino for all her time and ef- forts in making Westwood a winning team with a great spirit! «sse w 107 I . ? The Varsity Softball Team ended their season with a record of 4-12, under the coaching of Paula Hillberg and Captains Mary Love and Barbara Bonner. During tryouts the team picked seemed to be one of the strongest ever. However, due to a plague of injuries, the girls really never got completely together. Seniors to be missed next year are: Bar- bara Bonner — Co-Captain and outfielder who has played on the varsity squad for four years; Mary Love — Co- Captain, catcher, and outfielder who has been with the squad for four years; Chris Dion — second base and shortstop for four years; Kathy Love — outfielder, JV player for three years and varsity in ' 77; Tricia McCarthy — out- fielder, two years on the JV and two years with the varsity; and Mary Burke — pitcher, a JV player for three years and senior year with the varsity. The biggest game of the season was the victory over Bellingham. At that time, Bellingham was tied for the league championship but the Wolverines put an end to their cham- pionship hopes. This includes the impressive 6-3 win over Hopkinton. The boys would like to thank Coach Russell Downes for his con- tributions towards an exciting and fun year. II NO PARENTHESIS After a lot of time and effort, the forty- member editorial staff of No Parentheses — the school creativity magazine — selected the material for the 1977 issue. This year ' s Editor- in-Chief, Deanie Pearce, and Faculty Advisor, Mrs. Eberly, had the much-appreciated co- operation of all. This is evidenced by the quality of their final product. AMERICAN FIELD SERVICE Under the guidance of Mrs. Virginia McCoubrey this year ' s American Field Service Club had another exciting and profitable year. Westwood High School was fortunate to have two exchange students this year. Anna Lucia Castro from Costa Rica and Asa Svensson from Sweden. Both had an en- joyable and educational year. These two students will be sorely missed when they leave us after graduation. Two students graduating with the class of 1977 also had the opportunity to travel abroad with the A.F.S. last summer. Karen Moses spent the summer in Switzerland while Bill Rogers spent his in Columbia. Financially, the club had its best year ever. The annual A.F.S. inter- national dinner was a huge success. The club also sold Christmas cards, and had a fun week of penny-pitching. A spring garage sale also contributed to the treasury. Once again, however, the tremendous success of the annual Magazine Drive by the freshman class provided the bulk of financial sup- port. The main objective of the AF.S. is to bring people together from different cultures and to spread peace throughout the world. A.F.S. A change in the format of the show was brought about by Mr. Bonaiuto. The change made Westwood a real threat in competitions. Mr. Bonaiuto arranged the show, Mr. Strachan co- ordinated it to marching maneuvers, and Mr. Tobin created a cool drum line. The show was made up of five numbers and a reprise. Included were: Shaft, Chester, Rally-Round- the-Flag, a unique arrangement of Yankee Doodle, Feelings, and Conquest. Student leaders of the band were: President Sue Dettbarn, Vice-President Craig Madge, Secretary Robin Mackey, Treasurer Jean Hildebrant, Librarians Ellyn Kusmin and Katie Cook, Publicity Director Mary Nolan, and Drum Major John Sullivan. The band participated in many shows and competitions in addition to the weekly football games. Performances in- cluded: the Somerset Musictown Festival III, the Somerville Band Show, the Bay State Marching Competition, the Massachusetts State Competition, and numerous parades. The parade highlights were a five-mile parade in Peabody, and the Quincy Christmas Parade. The Memorial Day Parade and the Westwood Day Parade completed a great season of marching. The year was highlighted by a successful exchange with Winthrop High School in Maine. The last week of April brought the annual Spring Pops Concert. The audience proved to be the largest in years. MacArthurs Park and Instant Concert were greeted enthusiastically by the crowd. Next on the agenda was an Exchange Con- cert. The Winthrop Rambler Band of Winthrop, Maine visited Westwood in May. A dance and pizza at the Gardens helped the Winthrop and Westwood musicians to become friends. One week later the Westwood Wolverine Band journeyed five hours to Winthrop, Maine. The bands spent Friday night at a dance which proved very successful. Saturday, despite clouds, was spent at the Y Camp on one of the Winthrop Lakes. A softball game and a cookout were the highlights of the day. The concert on Saturday was followed by a party at Winona ' s. This ended a great year. 147 ORCHESTRA Under the direction of Sebastian Bonaiuto, the Westwood High School Orchestra enjoyed a very successful year. Among their many activities were a combined Junior- Senior High School concert, an exchange with Somerset, and the Pops Concert. The group ended the year by participating in the All-Town String Festival. Their hard work and enthusiasm showed in each of their performances. DANCE BAND The Westwood High School Dance Band . . . The group performed regularly at various shopping malls and at the Fanuel Hall Marketplace in an effort to raise money for a trip to Ireland. The group also entertained at numerous dances, private parties, and concerts. As a result of extensive rehearsing and perform- ing, the band has attained a near professional level of entertainment. The group plans to tour Ireland for seventeen days with the Mansfield High School Band. Look out Ireland, The Westwood High School Dance Band is on its way! 148 COLOR GUARD I can ' t yell any louder ... I forgot my flag Can I wear my coat??? . . . The real thing, the sequence of motion and fact that made the emotion and which would be as valid in a year or in ten years or, with luck a nd if you stated it purely enough, always. —Ernest Hemingway Typists Left to right: J. Other awards were given to those students who showed great moral achievement. The ceremony was highlighted by the yearbook dedication to Mr. Walsh. t JH CLASS DAY Well show the world 162 163 ' • • A Happy Ending % Never let success hide its emptiness from you, achievement its nothingness, toil its desolation. And so . . . Keep alive the incentive to push on further, that pain in the soul which drives us beyond ourselves. Do not look back. And do not dream about the future, either.
