VESTWOOO PUBLIC LlERAft 3 3018 00091 3353 In autumn, even in August, thoughtful days begin— and we can walk anywhere with profit. — Thoreau I 4. 1 1 1£ MR. CHARLES W. FLAHIVE It ain ' t what you do, it ' s the way that you do it Thankyou. 99 When we remember our years at Westwood High School, it will be through the pages of our yearbook. For in them we find the people and times which have molded our lives. Looking through our book, we will remember one teacher in particular; a teacher who has always been a great friend to the Senior Class and whose understanding in our failures and pride in our success as a class will always be remembered and appreciated. It is, therefore, for his unselfish devotion to the students and dedication to his profession, that we dedicate the 1972 Green Years to Mr. Charles W. Flahive. The aim of the Drama Club, by using audio-visual techniques, is to attract and involve students inclined towards Theater Arts. Harlequin, the school literary magazine, is the showcase for students talented in creative writing. Another enjoyable extracurricular activity is the scheduling of trips to view current films of general interest. English Mrs. Leslie Sirota Miss Joan Dillon Mr. David Sanfason Opposites attract. The man who inspires us to greater heights in music is none other than Mr. Mark — as he is af- fectionately called. Without his guidance and en- couragement, the marching band, concert band, or- chestra, chorus, double quartet, and folk club would not be as appealing. After hours of practice for the exchange concerts, the sounds which come forth are vibes to be proud of. The high degree of participation in musical pro- grams is indicative of Westwood ' s success in pro- viding programs attractive to a large majority of the student population. SENIOR CLASS HISTORY The fall of 1968 brought another new wave of freshmen to West- wood High, headed by class president Jack Fitzpatnck. treasurer Sue Cnss. secretary Cookie Dorian and vice-president Cheryl Saan — another new crowd to face four years of uncertainty, hopes, dreams, victories, and defeats As freshmen we were a bit cockey. coming fresh out of being the big kids in junior high; but were soon to learn that now we were the low men on the totem pole. On entering we were immediately lost in the maze of corridors, sarcastic upperclassmen. and |ust the over-all size and complexity of this vastly different world We heard a speech by our then princi- pal Mr. Chase, which others say he gave every year; verbatim and that, like a doctor ' s slap, sent us on our way. We were to go out and start to feel our way around and. under the guidance of our teachers, we began to mature and grow. Finally, when we did begin to feel secure and find our classrooms on time, we became brave enough to sponsor a dance. The dance, our first success, fattened the class treasury and instilled new confidence in our formerly timid minds. Then in June it didn ' t seem so bad after all 1 ■■■■■■■■■a ■■■■■■■■■a ■■■■■■■«■_ ■■■■■■■■• The anticipation and uncertainness had lessened quite a bit when we entered Westwood High School as sophomores in September of 1969. Early in the year we held a highly successful dance, under the direction of class officers Maureen Smith. Irene Kalfopulous. Cookie Dorian, and Sue Cnss. This was the year the formal dress code was dropped, and a gradual relaxing of the school atmosphere followed. With the establishment of the Student-Faculty-Senate, there began to be a greater involvement and interacting between students and teachers, discussing important issues. Nineteen-sixty-nine seventy was quite a big year for sports as the winter track team emerged as Dual County league Champs, and the junior varsity basketball team went undefeated; also in the limelight was the football team, who had its first winning season in 4 years. Class day saw the dedication of the year book to Mr Chase, as he retired as principal of W.H S. after many years of service. We entered our junior year, with assurance and self-confidence, a far cry from opening day 1969 We were not far into the year when we were confronted with the PSAT ' s and NMSQT ' s. the first of bar- rage of tests that would carry us through the spring. The junior class may have set a precedent in having the prom outside the school. Under the leadership of class officers Frank Brown, Irene Kalfopulos. Cookie Dorian. Sue Criss. and advisors Miss Congdon and Mr. Baker, the May spectacle was held at the Chateau deVille in Framingham. The JV basketball team took another Dual-County League title but the varsity, while compiling a respectable record, failed to make the Tech for the first time in ten seasons. While the track team failed to capture the DCL title because of the flu, many school records were shattered during the 1970-71 season. The newly formed Student Faculty Forum worked towards bring- ing about better communication between students, teachers, and members of the community. In June we left a more related atmosphere. Our junior year was a year which saw the ground breaking ceremony for the new high school addition, informal study halls, a new Coke machine, and the advent of mini-courses. We had finally made it as top guys on the totem pole — the SENIORS! We couldn ' t enjoy it for long — the pressures of more testing and college applications weighed upon us. Early in the year, the senior class, under the direction of Irene Kalfopulous, Jan Rush- ton, Eva Johns, Sue Criss, and Mr. Beurman instituted the Friday morning ,breakfast program. Already anticipating the expenses of graduation, etc., etc.. Sue could be seen making the rounds of home rooms in an attempt to collect dues. 84 The student body, faculty, and administration worked hard to overcome the problems of school construction. There was also an increasing involvement of students in school and community af- fairs. This was exhibited in the clean-up sessions and the newly- established committee on Student Rights and Responsibilities — a group of students, administrators, faculty, and members of the community. Sportswise, Westwood collected a bundle of trophies as the winter track squad merged as DCL and state class D champs. The varsity and JV basketball teams also captured DCL crowns. Our traditional senior class play was performed before a packed audience as our members displayed their acting ability in Woody Allen ' s comedy, Don ' t Drink the Water. Musically, Westwood again led the way in displaying quality and talent through the band, orchestra, and out- standing vocal groups. Yes, we had made it to the top in more ways than one, and now the eternity of four years coming is the fleeting glimpse of four years past — four years of victories, defeats, hopes, and changes. We have seen our accomplishments transformed into memories. As we leave Westwood High School as the Class of 1972, we hope that we have left something behind when we take with us our four years of memories. Football The Wolverines battled through a tough season this year under head coach Edward Marx. Assistant coach Raymond Kodzis discovered a few stars in the backfield, notably seniors Mark Reddish at quarter- back and Co-captain Ed McGinnis and Guy DeSan- tis at halfbacks. Line coach John Poskus, a new addition to the Westwood coaching staff, built one of the strongest and most respected lines in the league. This predominantly senior line included Rick Thompson and Co-captain Alan Banks at ends; Mike and Paul Hanlon, no relation at tackles; and Jim Mullarkey and Mike Henry at guards. Other seniors included Tim Deacon, who filled in for an injured Mike Henry at midseason, and Tim Con- nors, who took a regular turn on a defense that allowed fewer points than any Westwood team, other than 1969, since the championship 1965 team. Another distinction for Westwood was the election of Co-Captain Alan Banks to the Dual County League All-Stars as a first team linebacker. Basketball is a long-standing tradition at Westwood. and this year ' s team up- held that tradition by not only qualifying for the Tech Tourney but also by taking the Dual County league championship. The team lost only two league games and led by Captain Rick Swann. who received help under the boards from Chris Jarvis and Mark Whalen, along with the excellent outside shooting of Mark Willis Wil- finger, Joe Ryan, and Gary Sessler. went on to a 17-4 over-all record. One of the many highlights of the year was the appearance of a trio entitled The Black Aces composed of Brian O ' Kane. John Carroll, and Jack McGrail. The Aces ' aggressive style of play had the unique talent of electrifying both the crowd and the team and was in constant demand. Promising newcomers for Coach Thwing ' s victorious varsity were delivered by Arthur Potter ' s JV team as they went on a 19-1 rampage — being undefeated in Dual County League play. The JV ' s will be replenished in good stead with members of a sparkling freshman squad that finished with a 17-3 record. The trackmen believed that records are made to be broken as Rich Gil- bride and Co-captain Jim Connors displayed in their battles in the 1000 yard run. Connors now holds the record with 2 minutes 22.9 seconds. The other Co-Captain, Marty Judge, along with Mark Reddish, who holds the 600 yard record, broke the school mark of points by an individual in a single meet with 11 l A. As usual, Jim Kelly was forever lowering the two-mile mark until it hit 9 minutes, 44 sec- onds. Surprises and excitement sparked the year with Tom Garvey as a surprise state champion in the 50-yard dash and school record holder in the 40. Excitement came with the championship hinging on the last two meets of the year. The tight meet with Wayland and the protest-filled Acton meet both ended in a Wol- verine victory. At the end of it all, Flaherty ' s Fleet Foots towed the trophy home. Unbeatable 101 Cross Country ► • ■The cross country team turned in its first winning season ever, this year under the supervision of senior co-captains Jim Connors and Mark Vernon. The team suffered the loss of their head coach. Harvey Fischler, for most of the season, but his able-bodied assistant, Mr. Richard Hargreaves, was able to fill the void. The team ' s winning record came on the strength of per- formances by the two co-captains and also by Rich Gilbride and Jim Kelly who set a new home course record of 13 minutes and 25 seconds. Kelly also be- came Westwood ' s first runner to qualify for the New England Cross Country Finals. Marty Judge supplied the frivolity as Fred Wall added a note of gaiety to the year ' s proceedings. The Wolverines had a losing season during 71-72 with a 2-10-2 record. Though the record doesn ' t look impressive, Westwood managed 2 wins and 2 ties — including an important tie against second place Bedford. Westwood placed last in the Dual County League, though Weston had the same record, because of a technicality. Westwood also played scrimmages against a few non-league teams, displaying good skating and posi- tional play. Don Stivaletta took on the challenging job of hockey coach this season at W.H.S., and the per- formance of the team showed an improvement over the 70-71 record. Mr. Stivaletta did a fine job of or- ganizing the team, and teaching them the basics of hockey. Senior co-captains Mark Kent and Rick Thomp- son ke t + he Wolverines alert and kept the spirit high when thetv was doubt about any Westwood victories. Several other seniors put in their efforts during the season. These men worked hard also and fought for the Wolverines when they were down. They are: Scott McCloud, George Kouri, and defenseman Alan Banks. — Dave Wyllie — Ski Team Although water skiing is not included among the Nordic and Alpine events of the ski team, this winter provided plenty of water and slush perfect for that sport. A new coach. Mrs. Nancy Hann along with the assistance of co-cap- s Nancy Hall and Jack Lannamann, guided the team through the most successful season ever. The highlight of the season came when Westwood. led by the brilliant skiing of Nancy Hall and Jill Whitley, easily defeated five other teams in a tough slalom meet at Blue Hills. This yejr ' s team proved to be much stronger in Cross Country than in pre- vious years and finished quite respectfully in many Cross Country meets. With many fine competitors returning next year and hopefully more SNOW, the team has great possibilities once again. Watch out 1976 win- ter Olympics! Ski Team Jr. Varsity Field Hockey Bottom l-r: E. Girls Basketball The varsity girls ' basketball team had a disheartening season; however, their deter- mination and good spirits never faltered. Miss Kathleen Delaney coached both varsity and junior varsity teams. She believed that skill rather than grade was important and proved for greater competition. Swim Team This year marked the introduction of a new team in Westwood Athletics. The swim team piloted by Coach Gearon and Captain Alan Bishop plunged headfirst into stiff competition as Coach Gearon was heard to say. Our boys are still wet behind the ears, but we ' re not afraid to get our feet wet! ' Although they missed having a winning season their spirits were not damp- ened. Despite the ever present fear of laryngitis, these hearty people of pep screamed their support of our teams from September till June. Supplying buses to all athletic events and plastering the walls with spine tingling words of encouragement, greatly intensified school spirit. A major factor in the success of this year ' s Pep Club was the return of the Animal Section. Bolstered by such return- ing veterans as Bob Akerly, Mike McDermott, Jose Mari- nelli, Tim Connors and Fred Wall, these men brought a new dimension to the art of cheering. Cheering this year was highlighted by our new mascot Peggy Hanlon. New uniforms were made to freshen up the appearance of the squad and practices were held daily in attempt to create new cheers and more school spirit. Despite the Football Team only winning two games of the season the cheerleaders tried their best to en- courage more spirit with a pre-game breakfast and pep rallies. Cheering for our Basketball Team turned out to be very successful for the team made the Tech Tourney and also became Dual County League Champs. With the aid of Mrs. Bergen, advisor and co-captains Cookie Dorion and Shelley Sweeney the squad of 1971- 1972 feels their attempts to make cheering exciting and rewarding were accomplished. Also credit should be given to the Hockey Cheerleaders led by Sheila Bero and Nancy Shaw. Another squad was added to pro- mote enthusiasm for the Wolverines. This was the Freshman squad led by Cathy Bergland. We hope in the future the cheer- leaders will be as successful as the three groups previously mentioned. Money, as always, proved to be the biggest problem Undaunted, however, we set out to raise money by sponsoring a spaghetti supper, Festa Italians, which proved to be rewarding in terms of student involvement and financial gams. Special thanks goes to Mr. and Mrs. Rossetti who so generously supplied the delicious sauce and lent their culinary skills for the evening. Certain days of the year were the most fun — naturally we mean picture- taking days. On these occasions the PA system never quieted as an endless procession of groups and clubs marched down to have their photo- graphs taken. At times like this we realized that a picture is equal to 10.000 words, as countless hours were spent labeling and identifying all the faces. In summing up the year, we realize that close cooperation among all those involved and the expert guidance of Mr. Flahive enabled us to publish what we consider the best of our green years. Thanks and good luck . . . But why settle for second best? Mike Swiek i A satisfied customer Literary Left to right: P. Eklund. M. Stuntzner. L Pearson. L Maranjian. J. Klein. M. Huddy. E. Johns. R.
