Flahive Advisor SENIOR CLASS PUBLICATION WESTWOOD HIGH SCHOOL WESTWOOD, MASSACHUSETTS Foreword As we face the end of our high school days, with anticipation and apprehension, we realize how much we have grown at Westwood High. We have learned to be aware of our surroundings, of each other, and of ourselves. ' We have learned that the greatest successes come when we look to the past only for its lessons and to the future only for its incentives. Concentrating on the realities of the present, we have gained new insights into life, made new friendships, and developed new values. The 1969 Green Years is a reflection of the events which have contributed to our growth. It is a remembrance of four years, lived as best we knew how, which marked both an ending and a beginning in our lives. Faculty vX WMm h ■ ' 0 t f , ' f ,C i fltt i !!!!!!!!!!!!!■• •• • i! Jl ' JW . ppniSii I . . h-- i £f«4 Seniors Classes Sports Activities We shed a tear. but is it of joy or sorrow. it shines with a brilliant light from our past, but deeper within holds the shadows of our future. It mirrors the world we have long been a part of; that will longer be a part of us. We, like this tear that falls haltingly down our cheeks, leave you timidly but surely, turning not back. we love you, for you have been the nucleus of our lives, but today we must leave you. Our tear reaches our lips, tasting bittersweet with thoughts and memories; a tear of sorrow that so many yesterdays are over, but joyful of so many more tomorrows. —Terrell Hamre ■MMMaaBi, • . ■ « ' Look to this day! Each day at Westwood has been one of success or disappointment, happiness or frustration. But they have each been important factors in our development, giving us a greater understanding of the world and ourselves. The ordinary days, as well as the outstanding ones, have served to carry us along towards the fulfillment of our goals. It is life, the very life of life. In its brief course are the verities and Realities of your Existence These four years have not been merely preparing us for life; they were life, with all its pleasures and trials. The exams, the term papers, and the homework were tempered with the parties, the dances, and the games. Life at Westwood has not been stagnant— all its facets have been explored and utilized. The Continuance of Growth It would be impossible to measure how much we have grown here. We have undergone many changes since we entered as freshmen in ' 65. Our teachers, our experiences, and our friends have molded us into more mature, more responsible students who are now prepared to assume more demanding roles. The Glory of Action Action has never been lacking here. Our teams have always been ready to supply it for proud spectators. Occasional defeats were overshadowed by more frequent victories, as Westwood proved its excellence. For Yesterday is but a Dream And Tomorrow only a Vision But Today well-lived makes every Yesterday a Dream of Happiness. And Every Tomorrow a Vision of Hope. Dedication . . We, the Class of 1969, have chosen to dedicate our yearbook, as a token of our esteem, to Mr. Gail Thwing. To you, Mr. Thwing, we extend our sincerest thanks For your contagious good humor, For your unselfish dedication to our basketball team, For your long hours of work with the Conservation Club, For your willingness to listen to our problems, For always remaining calm and in control. And above all, for being a true friend. Because of your obvious dedication to your students and to Westwood High School, we dedicate this book to you. 10 11 Coordinating All Aspects Of School Life Thankfully you are in a world of great social change. And pay for them, even! But we solved the problems one at a time. The Class, led by Joe Altimar, Wendy Biel, Stephanie Long, and Janis Cachelin voted to raise the class dues, for the first time in history, and we hit upon the brilliant idea of selling candy at basketball games. This temporarily alleviated our problem, and we went Class History Four years ago we came to Westwood High to be greeted with the first orientation day. We had the school to ourselves and tried desperately to memorize the location of the cafe- teria, the gym, the stairs, and our lockers. But all that mental activity was futile for the next day we were hopelessly lost and upperclassmen delighted in directing us away from our classes. When we had finally achieved some semblance of organization we directed our energies towards sponsoring the Poverty Prance to fill our empty coffers. It didn ' t exactly fill them, but at least it provided officers Wendy Biel, Jay Boyle, Stephanie Long, and Janis Cachelin with the knowledge that we weren ' t entirely destitute. Finally we became sophomores, with something besides our shoes to look down on, and the freshmen became the victims of our hidden hostilities. Our Orange Orgy turned out to be a little less, but what can you do with all those teachers around? Jay Boyle was our guiding light that year, assisted by Wendy Biel, Stephanie Long and Janis Cachelin. As sophomores we were perfectly content. We were no longer stepped on (so much) and the pressures of college preparation were in the far distant future. Little did we know . . . The advent of September, 1967 found us self-assured juniors and for a few weeks we enjoyed the status. But then it hit us, from all sides. We were painfully short of the funds needed to finance the prom and our senior activities, we found on with the prom. Chairmen Terre Hamre, Priscilla Perkins, and Sandy Brown coordinated our efforts and, although we don ' t know exactly how, we converted the gym into an enchanting spectacle of wonder. Twilight on the Reef was a stunning prom, and it gave the girls a chance to wonder where the other girls got their gowns, and the boys a chance to be utterly uncomfortable. After the prom, we somehow muddled through SAT ' s Toys for Tots program, and we saw our band and drill team perform at Fenway Park, to salute national Toys for Tots Day. Senior year will be remembered as the year of the infamous three session lunch, although most of us would rather forget it. It was also the year that officers Joe Altimar, Anne Murphy, Stephanie Long and Janis Cac- helin decided to fatten our still-undernourished treasury and tried not to think of what was in store for the next year. And then we were seniors, much to our astonishment. We had reached our seemingly unattainable goal. And we had to file those endless college applications and ask teachers to write us glowing recommendations to make us seem future world leaders. That completed, we could give our wholehearted support to the Student Council by the sale of Westwood sweaters, which everyone who was anyone bought. Our play, Arsenic and Old Lace, helped out more, and we survived our crisis. All the activity kept us so occupied that we hardly noticed the year slipping by us. But the year ended and we prepared to encounter the world alone, confident that we could reach other seemingly unattainable goals. 63 V a D. Ahigian b R. LaFontaine c G. Murray d S. Biggar e D. On May 17, 1968, the gym- nasium was transformed into an aquatic wonderland as the junior class presented Twilight on the Reef . Rare forms of sea life sus- pended in mid air and strikingly beautiful wall murals gave the im- pression of truly being under the sea. Music provided by Mr. Mo- naghan ' s dance band flowed from a garden of aquatic foliage. Queen Ann Marie Sullivan reigned from a shimmering oyster shell guarded by two flowered sea horses. Chairmen Priscilla Perkins, Terre Hamre, and Sandy Brown, under the supervision of Mr. Baker, did an outstanding job of organizing the prom and directing the various committees. Mrs. Gardner proved a very able director and she received invaluable help from student director Karen Hildebrant. John Ahigian, with his talent for assuming accents and creating unique facial expressions added laughs to the play, as did Linda Dixon and Joanna Polechronis as the two aunts who kept the bodies of their gentlemen in the cellar. The play provided excellent entertainment for all, and was a huge success. CAST (In order of appearance) ABBY BREWSTER Linda Dixon THE REV. DR.
