Flahive Advisor Our years at Westwood High have been high- lighted by many exciting experiences as we have advanced from freshmen to seniors. Now we find it is time for graduation from West- wood and for the beginning of the new life for which we have been prepared. We leave the Westwood traditions to be carried on by our successors, but our accomplishments and mem- ories of good times we take with us — many preserved between these covers. SENIOR CLASS PUBLICATION WESTWOOD HIGH SCHOOL WESTWOOD, MASSACHUSETTS JUNE 1967 For four years Westwood High School has formed the nucleus of our lives, from her guidance we have molded the designs of our personalities . . . our attitudes . . . our lives. The patterns of our lives are a kaleidoscope of movement, change, and expansion. Yearly these patterns have shifted and assumed varied forms as we have progressed from freshmen to seniors, as we have learned and have deepened our understanding. r Our design at Westivood has been based on change — changes in attitudes, friends, teachers. The change has been gradual, perhaps imperceptible; but we have changed. Change is life, and what Westivood has given us is a taste of this life. r.fW A.V flMK 7v23Cs CT! Now it is time to leave, to become planners of the fa r larger- design of society. Our individual designs will continue to shift as we go our separate ways in college . . . jobs . . . armed forces . . . marriage. But always will we have within us the reflections of designs we acquired at West wood High School. f 12 Green Years dedicated to As a mark of our admiration, we, the class of 1967 dedicate our yearbook to you, Mr. Case. We thank you for your quiet manner, your sub- tle wit, your good-natured smile, and moreover your unpretentious knowledge and ability. We thank you for the interest you have shown in each of your students. We thank you for listening to our complaints and lessening many of the pressures we have felt during these years. We value the knowledge you have imparted to us; but more than this, we value our association with you — for whom else do we call Father Case? Mr. Peter Case 13 Designs of Excellence in Education PRINCIPAL ' S MESSAGE My congratulations are extended to the graduates of the Class of 1967. CLASS POEM In the today of our lives We lie hidden in the ghosts of yesterday ' s children. As we grew from children to young adults — We grew apart. But we concealed the growing differences in a veil of the past, And We were happy, and we were content. But today must come, And, with regret, we must shed yesterday ' s children Exposing our growing individualities To the reality of tomorrow. Sadly we sigh, for we know that Yesterday must become yesterday. We say our goodbyes, And Suddenly — In the uncertainty of this tonight, We run fervently towards our tomorrow. — Janet Saad iii I? r 1 J. Stanley 16 K. Grueter 2 H. Hobson 17 J. HuRhes 3 S. Markarian Mezzetti Lundquist Pruyn Onorato Condrin Mulroy Tripp Brown Gerlach Devine Landrey Dixon Bigelow Keith Reflections of the Class of ' 67 SEPTEMBER, 1963 I ' m not so sure I like this. We ' re late, you know. Do they yell at you if you ' re late even if you don ' t know where you ' re going? What ' s ' downstairs, new wing ' mean? Why don ' t they just put the door numbers in order? After weeks of milling about, we resigned ourselves to the fact that we were destined to be freshmen ; and then we elected officers. Our president was Tom Wade; vice-presi- dent was Perry Wilson; secretary was Carole Begley; the empty treasury was put into the hands of Margie McCrave. Later we held the ritual Freshman Class dance. Discarding such marvelous appellations as Freshman Flop and Freshman Fiasco, we finally settled on Monkey with Cupid. (Guess what dance was big that year.) June came and it dawned on us that we had survived our Freshman year (talk about Marblehead.) SEPTEMBER, 1964 have 37 gym classes scheduled. You ' re in luck. The guidance line ends by the Coke ma- chine. Think of those poor freshmen. No thanks, I ' m thinking of me. Oh my gosh, I have Biology lab Tuesday right before lunch. You don ' t really cut those animals up, do you? Again we spent a few weeks disentangling ourselves. We were straighten out in time to elect Perry Wilson president, Bob Moffat vice-president, Carole Begley secretary, and Margie McCrave treasurer. The Officers mobilized forces for the Sophomore Class dance, Harvest Hop (very slight improvement on Monkey with Cupid .) SEPTEMBER, 1965 THIS is the year I ' m going to start studying. Boy, they ' re really pushing this college deal down our throats already. You mean EVERYONE has to read HAMLET? It sounds like something to eat. Well, at least our class is the first to do something. Yeah, big deal; wearing shorts during finals. Well, as the Beatles faded, we rose to the fantastic status of JUNIORS. We were faced with the seemingly insurmount- able problem of executing the proverbial prom. With the help of officers, Steve Geary, president; Richard Ghiz, vice- president; Janet Stanley, secretary; and Margie McCrave, treasurer; and the prom co-chairmen, Sandy McCoy, Margie McCrave, and Kathy Harrighton, Mr. Baker succeeded in calming the remaining vociferous rabble and in convincing us that all roads lead to Rome — (which is better than Won- derland.) We soon found, however, that Rome could not be built in a day, so we built it in a week. The realization that we were soon to be seniors came with the selection of class photographer and PICTURES!!! SEPTEMBER, 1966 You know, this is a little depressing — all these little kids. I ' m a little bit sick of filling out college board applica- tions, college applications, financial aid applications, and these essays — forget it! Boy, I thought senior year was supposed to be fun. Our final year, finally! We made it through three; we must have enough strength for the fourth one! Our officers, Rich- ard Ghiz (president), Bob Moffat (vice-president), Sarah Holbrook (secretary), and Margie McCrave (treasurer), started the year with the announcement that we wouldn ' t have enough money for senior activities despite our lucrative class play, The Whole Town ' s Talking . We decided to pay up before we incurred huge debts. This was the year of the South American invasion. Lillian Islas and Conchi Labato were our American Field Service students and both came to us from Chile. MARCH, 1967 We only have 60 more days of school! Have you been accepted anywhere yet? I don ' t know what I want to do next year. They must get sick of seeing ne in the guidance office. You know, strange as it may seem, I think I ' m going to miss this place next year! If we look back, it really has gone fast. These four years weren ' t always fun, not even mostly fun; but they WERE good. We ' ve produced sports teams, newspapers, dances, con- certs, science fair winners, and National Honor Society mem- bers. Sometimes we ' ve wondered if we ' d get through these hallowed halls without hollowed heads, but we ' ve made it and we ' re about ready for anything! — Gail Bachofner — Mary Lou Supple 56 w r- Most Athletic Tom Wade Christine Craigin Best Looking Mark McKissoek Cathy Neal Most Popular Bob Moffatt Margie McCrave Best Dancer Bob Moffatt Jane Oliverio Most Sincere Gary Dixon Sarah Holbrook Class Flirt Bob Brown Barbara Pruyn 58 Most Versatile Eric IVarsoii Christine Craigin SUPERLATIVES Sheryl Stoodley Is . . . On the night of May 21, 1966, the school gymnasium was trans- formed into a Roman palace as the class of 1967 presented its prom, Festa Romana. Roman col- umns, a fountain enclosed in a rose-covered trellis, a cafe scene overlooking a Roman countryside, and the music of Mr. Monaghan ' s orchestra all contributed to make the prom an occasion not soon for- gotten. Chosen queen of the prom was Sheryl Stoodley, who reigned with king Richard Child over the lovely court of seniors Linda Taylor, Christine Martin, Janice Sweeney, and Susan North, and juniors Linda Moscone, Catherine Neal, Carole Begley, and Christine Craigin. Many thanks are extended to Mr. Baker; to co-chairmen Sandy McCoy, Margie McCrave, and Kathy Harrington; and to the hardworking junior class, all of whose efforts made Festa Romana possible. Besides marching at football games and parades, the band exhibited outstanding skill at District and All-State competitions; at the Southeastern District Music Festival; and at an exchange concert in April at Plainville, Connecticut. Officers chosen to lead the band in these activities were : president David Dickhaut; secretary Mitzi Brink; treas- urer Eric Pearson; and librarians Janet Saad and Kathy Napoleone. Spirit and talent . BASKETBALL The Cieri-ous Men have once again brought the Dual County League championship back to West- wood, and entered the Tech Tourney for the seventh consecutive year. The team finished the season with a 19-4 record. After being chosen to finish third or fourth in the league because of lack of height, the team steamed on to compile a 17-3 record for the regular season to tie for the league championship. In the prelim- inary round of the Tech Tourney, Westwood de- feated Norwell by a one point margin. The quarter- finals found Westwood facing West Bridgewater. Westwood won the game handily, playing their best ball all year. The semi-final was the last stop for Westwood when Rockport managed to defeat the team. The senior starting five deserve a great deal of credit for their tremendous success throughout the year. Captain, Steve Geary, with Peter Melnitskey and Perry Wilson led the team in the forecourt. In the backcourt Tom Wade and John McAlice con- trolled the play with the skill and stamina needed for a winning club. Ed Luippold, John Morrison, Tom Smith, Ken Coleman, and Ron Hough formed one of the best second squads Westwood has ever had. If this year is any criterion, they should bring the league championship back to Westwood next year. The junior varsity showed promise and ability in compiling an outstanding record of 18-2. Probably the highlight of J. V. play was their game against Newman in which the final score was 106-41. Steve Mitchell and Eric Wilfinger travelled to the varsity for the Tech Tourney and played admirable ball. The coaching staff deserves a tremendous amount of credit for the dedication and guidance they have given the boys throughout the past years. On many occasions they would finish practice in the after- noon and then hurry off to scout an up-coming op- ponent. With a six-year record of 107 wins and only 15 losses, Mr. Cieri and Mr. Thwing have been and always will be one of the reasons for Westwood ' s annual success on the basketball court. i V i % ■-?£ aB! i 1 1 J h 1 j ■SCOREBOARD Westwood .... 62 Xaverian 56 Westwood 69 Canton 47 Westwood .... 77 Newman 40 Westwood 61 Holbrook 77 Westwood 84 Canton 49 Westwood .... 59 Lincoln-Sudbury ... 46 Westwood .... 65 Ashland 59 Westwood 66 Bedford 34 Westwood .... 79 Acton 71 Westwood .... 65 Wayland 62 Westwood .... 72 Lynnf ield 54 Westwood .... 67 Weston 60 Westwood .... 60 Lincoln-Sudbury ... 50 Westwood .... 54 Ashland 53 Westwood .... 66 Bedford 50 Westwood .... 56 Acton 66 Westwood .... 53 Wayland 40 Westwood .... 69 Lynnf ield 54 Westwood .... 57 Weston 52 Westwood .... 44 Xaverian 51 TECH TOURNEY Westwood .... 54 Norwell 53 Westwood .... 64 West Bridgewater . . 45 Westwood .... 61 Rockport 76 Captain, Steve Geary JUNIOR VARSITY First row, left to right: Deacon, McGrath, Wilfinger, Waters Vaas Hanley, Bulman, Tjaerlis. TRACK BASEBALL After last season ' s moderate success, with a record of 7-6, the Westwood High School diamond- men are seeing home plate with increasing frequency. With senior lettermen David Dickhaut, Ron Ricci, Peter Melnitsky, and Tom Wade returning along with un- derclassmen like George Chris and Tom O ' Connor at peak per- formance the league champion- ship may indeed be Westwood ' s again after a year ' s absence. That which plagues most teams, pitch- ing, is the major problem this year; however, coaches Downes and Walsh seem to have the situ- ation under control. Compiling a fine indoor record of 6-1, as well as second place in the Dual County League, the Westwood High Track Team is certainly to be commended for their success under extremely adverse conditions — both indoor and out. Succumbing only to Weston the team carried through outdoors with the same winning form. This year ' s track teams have carried through with the same tradition of the Westwood High teams of years gone by. Co-captains Moffatt and LaSallc with Coach Flaherty. HOCKEY The hockey team had a disappointing season this year due to the loss of some important team members early in the season. The team was led by Co-Captains Brad Cook, Doug McGee, and Mike Beaumont. Under Mr. Case ' s guidance, the team showed a lot of potential and determina- tion. After changes in the lineup, the team shaped up rather well and performed creditably against the better teams of the league. Underclassmen Richard White and Jim Shee- han show promise for the next year and sopho- more Mike Duquette, a new and welcome addi- tion this year, will be one of the major factors of strength next season. TENNIS TENNIS GOLF After having an extremely tough year in 19to compiling a 1-13 record, the tennis team is viewing the future with a great deal of optimism. Senior Chris Curwen and juniors Paul Callahan and Mike O ' Toole are returning to help boost the team. Dual County League opposition will prove stiff as in the past, but Coach DunLany and the Westwood netmen are on the road up. At the conclusion of last year ' s season the golf team had compiled a 10 and 3 record, and Coach Thwing feels that this season should be of the same calibre. Returning lettermen members of the past year are senior Ed Puzas, the number one player, and junior Tom Smith, who looks to be the number two man. Supporting these two boys will be Steve Geary, John Roos, Rick Hannon, and Bruce Kammer. Kneeling, left to right: Coffey, Crosby, Weider, Wayshville Nichol.
