Lyfc  WESTWOOD PUBLIC LIBRARY 3 3018 00230 1425 For Reference Not to be taken from this room jforeword With this volume of The Green Years, we not only reflect on our own finest hours but also inaugurate a new and beautiful school, a school whose solitary and final product is a segment of a generation which must inescapably face a disturbed and distraught world. This school, like all schools, must produce the leaders of a nation on whose shoulders rests the burden of world leadership. Each of us alone goes out in quest of a better, finer life for ourselves. All of us together go out in quest of a better, finer world for all humanity. This common bond cannot be broken by gradua- tion; it knows no distance nor dissolution. Under this nexus we shall exist for the rest of our lives as closely related as we have in the years gone by. It is our wish, therefore, that this yearbook serve as both the resume of our years in Westwood High School and the first page in a long and happy history, not only of a school, or a town, or even a nation, but of a world, dedicated under God to the betterment of all. — David Williams oLJedica tion racultu S. en tori 2 . ocumenti 14 n aerara Ana ted ' Activities r avert id em en td SbeJi ;, caaon As the theme of the 1957 yearbook is our new high school, we wish at this time to thank a person xvho has worked so hard to obtain this school for us — a person who has proven himself not only a respected counsellor, but also a good friend. In gratitude, we, the Class of 1957, dedicate this yearbook, the first of the new high school, to our principal, Mr. Isaiah Chase. FACULTY Ki jiu a M. Burns English George E. Kehoe Mathematics . We did not realize then what fascinating experiences lay in store lor us in the lour i .us to come. In our freshman year, the most difficult one, we were very fortunate to have Mrs. Lawton and Mr. Marshall as our advisors. The first in a long line of extremely interesting class meetings was for the election of olhcers. We (hose Loring Smith, fane Rees, Warren Mayhew, and Judy Ness. We held our first dance in the middle of the year, and it was, like all the others during our four years of high school, a financial success. During the course of our first year, we were sorry to see Fred Schlup, Ray- mond Balbanis, Jeanne MacDonald, Mike Lally, John Porteous, and Benjamin Rrayton leave us. The loss, however, was more than made up by the addition of Henry Lawlor, Steve Malera, and Robert Antonitis. We also lost our advisor and English teacher, Mrs. Lawton. Our advisors in our sophomore year were Mrs. Bair and Mr. Vitali. We could always count on them lor hard work and timely suggestions. Our sophomore elections were won by Loring Smith, Jane Rees, Barbara Wilson, and Judy Ness. The never-ending cycle of people moving to and fro took its toll again this year. Edward Balbanis, Peter Tummillo, Audrey MacLean, David Anderson, John Harkness, Anita DeSena left; but we gained our famous weatherman, Paul Dorey. At the end of our sophomore year we lost our wonderful French teacher, Miss Williams; and our advisor, Mrs. Bair, also left. In June we all took off to Duxbury beach on our class trip where we swam and frolicked on the sand. As juniors, we were little different from what we were as sophomores. How- ever, we had a few more responsibilities, and Miss Murphy and Mr. Wallace were most capable as our advisors. We started off by electing Loring Smith, Fred Holmes, David Williams, and Justine Jones as our class officers. Early in the year we also elected Judy Ness and David Williams to organize our spring prom. 32 It was with deep regret that we bade farewell to Carol Sharp, Judy Pond, Donald Haley, Ronald Haley, and Paul Eldridge; but we more than recom- pensed when the fates blessed us with John Brink and Irene Toomey. In May we held our prom, Moonlight and Roses, at the Maugus Club in Wellesley. It was the first prom to be held out of the high-school building and was enjoyed by all. One day late in our third year, we came to school and found our advisor, Miss Murphy, wearing a huge diamond ring. Her engagement caused a spon- taneous rush to prepare a party. She was thrilled to tears when a wedding cake and a lovely clock were placed on her desk; she left and is happily married. It was then time to elect officers for our final year. After a real campaign, we chose David Williams, Peter Berge, Carol Draper, and Judy Ness. Having cleaned up all old business, we, like homing pigeons, took off again to Duxbury beach to swim and frolic on the sand. Because the new school was not yet completed, we came back as seniors to double sessions in the regular high school. This was somewhat trying, but we pulled through under the capable direction of our advisors, Miss Burns and Mr. Kehoe. We were very fortunate to have Bjorn Uby from Sweden with us in our senior year. Loring Smith, Valerie Van Ham, Fred Holmes, and Clair Hender- son visited Europe the previous summer. Dave Ebert and Sandra Skulley entered our hallowed halls, and Justine Jones, Marilyn Bennet and Irene Toomey left them that year. Under the direction of Mr. Pierce we held our sponsor night in November to collect money for the yearbook. Because of the generosity of the people of Westwood, it was the most successful sponsor night ever. In December of our senior year, we were accorded the honor of being the first class to enter the new and beautiful Westwood Senior High School. One of the most enjoyable segments of our school life was spent here. Now here we stand ready to graduate; we reflect on those moments past — some trying, some joyful — that went to make up our high-school career. Somewhat regretfully we leave this magnificent school to the succeeding classes, hoping that the beauty within its walls will be an inspiration to them such as it has been, for too short a time, to us — the departing members of the Class of 1957. — George Johnson 33 AT JUNIOR HIGH 7-L NEW YORK N.Y. AT STATUE OF LIBERTY ROOLS a GEORGE EN ROUTE TO N.Y. J.H . CHEERLEADERS K laSA Jo ' 9 Cla.45 f- t oem At last we ' re ascending the next round in life And with no complaint we ' ll suffer the strife. Much has been done to make better our goal; Just what we ' ll achieve lies with the untold. We ' ve ne ' er been denied the right to learn, But given each chance to forward our concern. This year a new high school was given to us; One whicfi we ' ll honor and cherish witli trust. We ' ll often look back on the fun we miss Of school days gone by — the joy and the bliss. We ' ll never forget our teachers so brave Who through storm and trouble a smooth way did pave. With such teachers and school how can we fail? To life ' s utmost step we will try to scale. With God, as our guide, we ' ll go fast a?id straight. We ' ve embarked on our way; this is our fate. Sing we of our farewell As we pass through these portals dear We ' re walking on through, in quest of the new And bidding, to you, farewell. Green years, joyous green years We shall cherish memories past Our dear friends, we ' ll recall Our loyal friends all The glorious call, green years. Onward, ever after As we strive toxoard our future goals Aspiring to the rewards of the new We ' ll always be true, Westwood. Music by Sandra Skulley Words by Carol Draper — Marilyn Ray 35 C a3J J rophecy This is Walter GronkitC, your CBS roving reporter, speaking from West- wood, the Massachusetts town which has attracted nation-wide attention to itself by its phenomenal growth dining the last thirty-five years. We are report- ing the activities and ceremonies of the Westwood High class of ' 57 at their 25th annual reunion; and from our position at the entrance of the huge auditorium, we see Westwood ' s genial mayor, HANK FOSTER, leading the City Co uncil memhers IRENK TOOMEY, ROLAND SWETT, and chairman DICK BROWN, into the crowded auditorium and onto the stage for the anniversary ceremonies. Following them are wealthy industrialist JOHN MAGEE and his chauffeur, FRED HOI. MIS. We have just been informed that the distinguished- looking person standing in the doorway handing out programs for the forth- coming ceremony is the janitor, DAVE WILLIAMS, another member of the class. There ' s a mild uproar over there in the crowd. Marine Private ROB CASEY has just fainted from excitement and is being carried out by nurses DIANE FRENCH and CAROLYN MURCH! All eyes are now turning to the glamorous cabaret sweetheart, TI.SH Mc DOUG ALL, as she makes her way to her seat. Two noted celebrities have arrived: they are strongman, CARL KRIS- TENSON, and DAVE CORSINI, the Animal Man — regular performers on tele- vision ' s JOE CIANCARELLI Italian Hour. One outstanding member of the class has been unable to make arrangements to attend today ' s exercises. JOAN LARCOM, Congresswoman from the 13th congressional district, is attending court prior to being tried for income-tax evasion. Entering now, and getting much attention, is one of the wealthiest members of the class of ' 57. It ' s JOHN HILL, chairman of the board of the Moslcr Safe Company, surrounded by his corps of secretaries LORETTA DE BLASIO, JANE REES, BARBARA HER- SEY, and JUDY NESS. Word has just been received that CHESTER HAYES won ' t make it. He can ' t get permission for time off from his job as meat cutter at Brockelman ' s Market from boss PETER OUINN. Now getting a big hand is World Champion Goldfish-swallower, CAROL GIRLING, who recently broke the record of 1% per minute, formerly held by all-around athlete JOHN THURSTON. Heading toward his seat is scientist JAMES ROBINSON, who has developed a new doughnut-baking method. He claims his process will save two cents on every doughnut by eliminating the hole. Ironically enough, he is followed by his bitter enemies BRENDA SULLIVAN, PATRICIA ROCHE, LOIS CIRIELLO, and chairman MARIE QUAGLIERI of the Westwood Doughnut Bakery Board. They have issued a joint statement calling Robin- son ' s methods un-American. Here ' s a colorful personality; it ' s CLAIRE AN- DERSON, proprietor of the Gypsy Tea Room. She is accompanied by her business associate, MARTHA HAMMOND. It ' s been pointed out that farmer 36 BOB ANTONITIS has on a brand new pair of overalls. He struck oil a few days ago. Now picking their way through the crowd are two men that perform regularly on the Italian Hour, the popular singing duet of DAVE EBERT and KEN DRESSER. A murmur arises from the spectators as a limousine draws up; wild cheering breaks out as President of the World, DICK SMITH, steps out, accompanied by U.N. Secretary-General BJORN UBY. There ' s the wail of a siren, and out of a paddy-wagon, following policewoman CLAIRE HENDER- SON and Occifer WARREN BECK, steps police photographer PAUL DOREY who is covering the case of the hatchet slaying of WARREN MAY- HEW. Arriving in their truck are DOROTHY PRITCHARD and BARBARA WILSON, research consultants for NICK EATON ' S Westwood Oil Company. Now seating themselves are LINDA PAIGE, MARION LOCKE, JOYCE AUGUSTYNIAK, and GAIL LEXTH, of the U.S. Olympic swim team. Here ' s popular GEORGE JOHNSON, assistant librarian to Mrs. Bradley. He ' s jok- ing with MARILYN RAY, ELAINE HAGGMAN, and VALERIE VAN HAM, manufacturers of artificial Christmas trees. Outside there is a whirl of blades as a helicopter descends. Out steps faithful Eskimo guide DAVE POTTER, and his comical sidekick, FRAN GIANNI. They were piloted by HENRY LAW- LOR and STEVE MAFERA, with the able assistance of stewardesses MARJIE HOWARD and BARBARA EMERSON. We will now take you inside where the ceremonies are about to begin. Wait! Everybody is turning around. There ' s an ambulance pulling up outside and out of it come nurses CAROL DRAPER, NANCY JOHNSON, HELEN KUREIS, FRANCES LAMBTASE, JANE BRANN, SANDRA SKULLY, CLAIRE McGLAUFLIN, JANICE McGEE, and MADELINE FISHER, carrying a double-sized stretcher. On it are the renowned BERGE BROTHERS. As you remember, DR. LAWRENCE COOK, of the Faulkner Hospital, recently performed an operation which was the first of its type in the history of mankind. The BERGE twins, previously normal, were joined together at the shoulders by surgery, and are the world ' s first arti- ficial Siamese twins. The ceremonies are starting again and hurrying into the hall is a rather mixed group of former classmates. They are BOB GERAGHTY, prominent stockbroker; BUZZ SMITH and ED ROBINSON, who shovel snow for the town of Norwood; BILL VANDERWAL, editor of the Westwood Daily Worker; and NANCY ADAM, Sunday School Superintendent. Before the ceremonies come to an end, I would like to comment on how different this 1982 is from what many members of the class thought it would be after reading that decadent, capitalistic novel, 1984. I hope that under the leadership of Big Sister, we will accomplish as much during the next five, five-year plans as we did during the last twenty-five years. —John Brink 37 BEST DANCERS BEST LOOKING SUPERL MOST POPULAR MOST STUDIOUS  BEST NATURED MOST VERSATILE DONE MOST FOR CLASS ■MOST ARTISTIC ATIVES r MOST MUSICAL __ BEST DRESSED CLASS WITS MOST ATHLETIC CtaU Witt NANCY ADAM leaves her rosy cheeks to Karen Loder . . . HANSEN OUR NEW SCHOOL yJld rriah School Luoodbue In March, 1939, a town meeting of the citizens of Westwood was held; and the problem of a new school was discussed. The town voted 294-51 to buy an 11-acre lot on the corner of Nahatan and High Streets. On it was to be erected a school, which would house grades seven through twelve. For this project, the sum of $180,000 was appropriated. The contract was given to August Johnson, Associates; and they were to complete the school by September, 1940. However, the opening of the school was delayed until October 1 of that year. Thus was com- pleted the building which would, in its day, serve as a house of learning for seventeen classes of Westwood ' s youth. We, the class of 1957 , entered the school in September, 1953, and there spent almost three and one half of our four high-school years. Certainly all of us agree that in that school most of our memories lie. In that school we were given our foundation, and the greater part of our high-school happiness remains there — the building from which we departed on December 17, 1956 — the old high school. 76 GIRLS WORKING H -.11 DOWN WITH THE G ROOMS GO, MRS. BRADLEY! THE SHOP - n-:... DISMANTLING HOME EC. Lyur i lew School . First official plans for our new high school began in March, 1949, when a School Building Committee was formed and given an allowance of $200 for its expenses. In November, 1951, the Coletti Brothers, Architects, were em- ployed to design the building and plan construction. Sites had to be studied and selected; twenty-two acres were finally purchased on Nahatan Street, and a professional building consultant was employed. The School Building Assistance Commission and the State Emergency Finance Commission had to grant approval. Co-operation of the Town Selectmen and the Town Finance Committee was necessary; collabora- Hon among the Superintendent, School Committee, Principal and Faculty was required to define the needs, room by room, and to deter- mine the type of furniture and equipment desired. Town opposition delayed final approval for a full year, and addi- tional funds beyond the original $1,220,000 had to be voted up to a total cost of $1,680,000. Ground breaking was on February 10, 1955. The cornerstone- laying exercises were held on June 10, 1956, and Lieutenant-Governor Whittier delivered the dedicatory speech. The high-school seniors entered the building for occupancy on December 17, 1956. At that time, the shop, the gymnasium, the music room, and the auditorium were still uncompleted. The formal dedication was made in the spring of 1957, at which time the building was open to the public for inspection.
