FRONT ROW: V. Grandotti, K. Grund, A. Hasselwander, S. VanMeter. In her second year as Head Coach for the Varsity Lumberjills, Vicki Burnett had a lot to smile about. The Varsity Volleyballers played hard all season and demonstrated a team unity and in- tensity that lasted through the last minute of the last game. A big moment in the 1987 season came when the 'Jills won the second match against the neighboring Volcanoes. A tough, last minute loss, in the first match left a great deal of disappoint- ment in our girls. They certainly turned that all around with the second match results. Jenny Hasselwander won the MVP award; Danielle Bosetti took Most Inspirational and Jenny Butler won the Most Improved. 36 INTRAMURAL FREE THROW SHOOT Kris Hoelzle and Mike McKown easily took first place in the Intramural Free Throw Shoot-out. Danny Church was one-half the winning combination for second place. (Not pictured is Jenny Church) The eighth grade duo, Jeremy Growdon and Nicki Whitman, finished in a strong third place. Young, S. Stevens, A. Waldron. FRONT ROW: J. Edwards, S. Beuchat, J. Growdon. A group of nine determined young women, led by returning players Kim Cox, Tracy Mattern, and Ann Marie Waldron, began the 1987 season with high spirits. Those spirits were encouraged with the addition of a strong group of Fresh- men athletes. The team gained valuable early experience by competing in both the Big Valley and the Fall River Tournaments. They were able to convert that early experience into competitive FRL play throughout the season. Coach Morlang was excited about the future prospects of this improving group of athletes. 40 Coach Hilda Morlang continues to be a prominant figure in the Westwood Girl's athletic programs. I will remember this team for a long time. Not because it was my first year as Head Coach, but that they were a team of very special young men. It was hard on them, to have new coaches, to learn a new system, and to be a small squad. Yet they did every- thing that was asked of them. I learned a lot from this team; I hope I was able to teach them as much. Thanks and good luck, Coach Danny L. Stowell First year coaches Dan Stowell and Joe Hassel wander combined to provide leadership, imagin ation and excitement to Lumberjack football. Smith, D, Schattenberg, A. Perez, M, Stelzreide, S. Parker, R. Sagaser, J. Rust, R. Kersh. I believe the players exhibited good sportsmanship and heart. We were a small team and we played some big teams, but the players always gave it their best. I think that with a few more years of experience they will form a very good varsity team. I hope all the players will stay with the program. I am really looking forward to next year. I would like to express my thanks to everyone who helped with the program. Mckown, C. Hanners, J. Spencer, L. Northern, M. Bryant. The 1987-88 'Jacks finished fourth in the strongest Division 5 league in the State. Their only losses were to teams ranked in the Top 8 of their Division; all those teams advanced to the State Playoffs. Each player made a strong contribution to Westwood's success. Senior Captain Mike McKown led the 'Jacks in scoring with a 17.6 per game average. He had plenty of help from Seniors David Thomas and James Spencer, who each had 20 point games in the season. The underclassmen had their moments as well. Craig Hanners and Zac Schriver were solid inside players; No one appl- ied more pressure than Tom Cox, and Dean Growdon combined with Louie Northern to contribute quality minutes throughout the season. Coach Bryant added, This was a fun group to coach. They required a unique method of motivation, but they always got the job done. Coach Bryant's tough and disciplined style led the 'Jacks to a respectable finish in the tough Pioneer Feather River league. 49 Junior Tom Cox was the enforcer for an intimidating press, and often led the 'Jacks in rebounding. Captain Mike McKown lays in a deuce with Gibbs coming in for a follow tip. Dean Growdon was impressive in his first year on the Varsity. Chuck Hanners goes over Loyalton. S1 BOYS JV BASKETBALL TOP ROW L TO R: A. Graham, P. Graham, Coach Hasselwander, C. Valliere, D. Valerga, R. Kersh. FRONT ROW: R. Meadows, A. Yderraga, J. Stelzreide, M. Schriver. The 1987-88 JV roundballers were certainly a competitive and spirited group. Joe Hassel- wander took over as Head Coach and installed a deliberate offensive and defensive scheme to fit the composition of his team. They were in several down to the wire games, that we seperated by only a break or two. Richard Kersh was the leading scorer and was also responsible for a great deal of the re- bounding. Chris Valliere shared the board work as well as picking up some of the scor- ing load. Miles Schriver and Jason Stelzre- ide handled the ball on the perimeter while Andy Graham and Dave Valerga did the inside work. Coach Joe did a great job of bringing this team together to function as a unit. They enjoyed several pregame activities and had many memorable experiences. Miles Schriver works behind a solid Pat Graham screen. Valliere goes over the Warriors for two of his 15 points. Mike Stelzreide looks for the ball. They narrowly missed a playoff spot because of the unusual structure of our league. Coach Quick was eager to praise the play of many of his key figures. Jenny Church, as a sophomore starter, was instrumental in giving consistancy to the 'Jills inside game. She was joined on the boards by Bev Graham and Jenny Hasselwander. Both Jenny's return to give the 'Jills a real ad- vantage for the '89 season.
