As we go through our four years of high school we have the opportunity to experience a variety of emotions and activi- ties. Joe Hasselwander has maximized those opport- unities. He has provided us with examples of dedication and commitment. His achieve- ments include the realms of academics, ath- letics, leadership and social. Joe would be the first to admit that he was not the best at everything he tried; but he was the best that he was capable of being. He worked long hours to guarantee his own opportunites for the future. He set goals for himself, limits for his time and would not be distracted. Joe has shown us how to be successful, from his 300 pound bench press to the simple task of making and keeping friends. We all wish to recognize his efforts and applaud his desires. He has built the foundation to direct his own future. To our good friend, we wish you the best in all that you do. Thanks for the memories. 4 ina tfibtioid oe CfCabbelt andeb lla'i i £ (ocA vm fJlelanbon ZTebeba jilcJVa jXobkie JVelben PjPuban tyPi bon SENIOR DIRECTORY SHAWN ALEXANDER: 2yrs JV Ftbl- 1 most inspirational, 1 all league, lyr V Ftbl- 1 hardest hitter, lyr Wrestling, 2yrs Baseball, lyr Track, lyr Speech Drama. The dress-up days were as follows: Monday- Sweats Day Thursday- Rock Band Day Tuesday- Camo Day Friday- Red and Black Day Wednesday- Sports Day The winners overall of dress-up were the seniors. SENIOR PRINCESS - MONICA DRAKE THE SWEETHEARTS OF 1986 SENIOR PRINCESS - JAMIE SILVA Connie McConnell The Boys Basketball season came to an end with the naming of the Sweetheart of '86. Each year the players nominate four girls who most represent the ideals they set for themselves. The student body then selects the winner from among the final four girls. This years candidates were seniors Teresa McNab, Monica Drake and Jamie Silva, and junior Connie McConnell. Like the players, each girl represents herself with a sense of pride and dignity. The final count of votes gave the crown to the junior, Connie McConnell. Connie served as a cheerleader during football and as a statistician during basketball. Her quiet manner and friendly smile earned her the respect of all our students. SENIOR PRINCESS - TERESA McNAB Team captain Joe Hasselwander presented Connie with a gold heart and a bouquet of flowers on behalf of all the varsity players. 37 VARSITY FOOTBALL TOP ROW L TO R: R. Coaches comments It has been a pleasure for me to watch these young men develop over the past four years, not only as football players but also in the arena of life, and char- acter. These young men have set an ex- ample for future teams to follow. That of hard work, a desire to win, dedica- tion, pride in the school, team, and in themselves. Through sheer grit, deter- mination, and courage. They have changed certain defeat into victory. This spirit and will to win, as demonstrated by these fine young men, has been an inspiration to all. This particular group of foot- ball players undoubtedly ranks as one of the finest to ever play football at West- wood High School. This year's 1985 Junior Varsity Volleyball team was young in experience but highly motivated with team spirit. Coach Hilda Morlang guided the Junior Jills through a season of unusual games. Ronda Brucker was the only returning player. Her hard work and devotion to the team was an inspiration. Jennifer Wright and Lisa McCormick began their first year as volleyballers. Their determination and hitting ability gave the team the background needed to formulate their unusual season. With Jenny Hasselwander and Danielle Bosetti in the set and hit position, the net area was being covered. Mary Southworth and Kelli Hazelton rounded out the team with their eagerness to improve and general team spirit. The unusual season for the Junior Jills pro- vided them with an overall number of wins that had not occured in many years. Three league wins gave the team the formula to play Volleyball with the eagerness and spirit that is seen in the women's sports at Westwood High. u5 BUMP, SET, SPIKE... The ’85-’86 Season. Senior Co-Capt. Scott Harper® O ■ Puts one DOWN! _____________________________________________ This season provided quite a few mem- ories for our players. Although we were not in contention for a title we took several teams down to the final minute before a winner was determined. Our league was the toughest it's ever been, with four schools rated among the best in Northern California. These players were a highly competitive group, with a lot of pride and dedi- cation. I enjoyed working with them and sharing the experience of West- wood basketball. I want to thank them for all their effort and the memor- ies they leave behind. flit ■ Little Lee. J.V. BASKETBALL TOP ROW L TO R: D. Gibbs, D. Shy, D. Thomas, T. Cox, R. Ihsen, BOTTOM ROW: Ch. Hanners, R. Stewart, Cr. Hanners. Coaches Comment. Coaching the J.V. Basketball team this year turned out to be quite an experience, for all of us. I was asked many times, How does the team look this year coach? My answer was usually Small, but slow! However frus- trating this coaching business is, it is also full of rewards. We improved individ- ually as well as any team throughout the season. Despite a losing record, the West- wood J.V. team played with lots of hustle, pride and an attitude that well represents Westwood athletics. First year coach Marty Mason did a great job at coaching the young 'Jacks. 55 cc o H CJ The Westwood J.V. bench waits anxiously to get into some action. Sophomore guard Mike Mckown. I can't express how much I enjoyed coaching this year. Al- though it was my first year, I tried to get the team to play to their capabilities and when they did they were the best team in the league! Like I told the girls several times during the season, Nobody has better athletes on their team than we do, and I mean it. To the two seniors on the team, Lorrie Nelson and Lee Armstrong, I wish them great happiness in the future. I would like to thank everyone who made this year possible. Mr. Phil Bryant for helping me and Mr. Jeff Miller for the work he put in prior to this season. 57 tip against Herlong. First year coach Mimi Faye is in deep thought as she watches her girls perform on the court. The J.V. Girls Basketball team had a successful year. Although it didn't show on their record, their season was successful in more than one way: first year coach Mimi Faye got the experience of coaching a group of young girls, the girls improved as individuals as will as a team, and a group with one returning player got the experience needed to go places in our league. Overall, the J.V. Girls showed inspiration, teamwork, and Hustle which are traits of Westwood ath- letics. 60 Kris Carr gets tough rebounding position. Jenny Hasselwander gets fired up during a time-out huddle. VARSITY BASEBALL BACK ROW L TO R: Cory Hedrick, Steve Alderman, Larry Roberts, John Karjcirik, Jim Russell, Jim Thornton and Robert Ihsen. MIDDLE ROW: Nathan Lee, David Thomas, Joe Hasselwander, Captain Joe Hasselwander Jason Counts, Darin Hans and Jon Sprigg. returning catcher. FRONT ROW: Mike McKown. As the defending League and Section Champions, there is a big load on these players. They will be pusuing West- woods eigth straight base- ball title. Our defense should be solid with returning starters Joe Hasselwander, Jim Russell, Cory Hedrick, Steve Alderman, John Karjcirik and Larry Roberts. The hitting may even pick up alittle with the addition of Scott Harper and Ken Sawyer. Other prominant newcomers are senior Jim Thornton and Mike McKown. We have quite a baseball tra- dition at Westwood. These guys will make the most of their abilities. If we just get some consistant pitching we will have a great shot at another title. Nelsen, S. Wilson, N. Barrera, R. Spencer. We are looking forward to a good year in 1986. Our softball team has many returning players with good skills. Lorrie Nelsen is back as a fourth year player and our team will count heavily on her pitching arm. Some other returning players to be counted heavily on will be Susan Wilson, Robin Stevens, Robin Spencer, Nicole Davis, Nancy Barrera, Tessa Richards, and Jennifer Wright. Many younger players are expected to make this team one of the better girls' teams of the past few years. Hard practice produces winning efforts. This is our plan for the 1986 softball season. TRACK Back Row L to R: Chuck Scholz, Allen Haley, Kevin Latham, Jeff Edwards, Coach Will Wright. Back Row L to R: Bev Graham, Chuck Hanners, Jill Kersh, Chantel Pettengill. As with every spring track season, I look forward to the excitement and training necessa: to develope a girl and boys tear at Westwood. This years startini numbers are smaller than usual. However, with the warm weather and returning lettermen, I am sure we will see our numbers grow. Returning lettermen are Jill Kersh- distance runner, Chuck Hanners- distance runner, Mark Growdon- distance runner, Jeff Edwards- long jump and relays, Robbie Draughon- discus and relays. We have a good schedule and I am looking forward to seeing some fine performances by this year's teams. The 1986 Golf Team has the potential to be the best ever at Westwood. We have strong returning players like Rick Pettengill, Tyron Dunton, David Shy, Gwen Ham- ilton, and Cherrie Wood. Foreign exchange student Jon Azkue has the potential to be the league metalist. We also have the possibility of some beginning golfers being roll players in the best sea- son ever. If everything goes well, we may bring to Westwooi their first F.R.L. golf champ- ionship. CATEGORIES 70 71 ORGANIZATIONS As a student, you want to prepare yourself for the real world . That|s where you'll spend the rest of your life. It takes more than punching a time clock and carrying a lunchpail to make it out there. It takes the quality of leadership, pride, deter- mination and dignity. That's where the Vocational Industrial Clubs of America comes in. When you put V.I.C.A. to work, you give yourself a tremendous advan- tage. V.I.C.A. Members; J. Hasselwander T. Hasselwander J. A lot of people think the class is an easy A and a way to goof off and take pic- tures. This is not true. Selling ads, fixing pages, taking useable pictures and meeting deadlines are chores for anyone. Being part of the year- book class can be fun and rewarding as well as hard. It is a great feeling to know that you have helped capture the greastest moments of everyone's high school years. We hope you will enjoy having this yearbook as much as we enjoyed putting it together for you. 73 LEE ARMSTRONG MARK GROWDON as PABLO CHRISSY BAND Band Officers; Kevin Latham, Pres. Steve Smith, H.S. Rep. Monica Drake, Sec. Gwen Hamilton, Vice Pres. The Westwood Band under the direction of Louis Hamilton provided entertainment throughout the year. This years highlight was a trip to Cal Berkeley. 76 There are no words required . . FEATHER PUBLISHING COMPANY INC Westwood Calif. 96137 P.O.
