Recording memories is a difficult task, but the Journalism Staff set out to do just that. Soliciting funds, scheduling photo sessions, keeping accounts of sports scores, and setting up page layouts all weighed heavily on our minds. Yet we realized the importance of publishing a guality yearbook and dedicated ourselves to the task. This final product serves as a remembrance of the entire school year. It preserves for- ever the faces of instructors and classmates, suspense-filled ball games, crazy dress-up days, and fads of the time. For freshmen, it represents one of their first rites of high school; for seniors, it depicts their final year. It is a picture-filled journal of what once was. We the Journalism Staff of Westwood High School, have been priveleged to compile this living history for your enjoyment. It is our hope that we've been able to capture your special memories of 1982-83. 2 Our leaders in action. My chest is bigger than your chest! DEDICATED. . . to all our parents. PARENTS: This 1982-83 yearbook is dedicated to our parents. It has been their dedication to us that has contributed the most to our opportunities for memories and accomplishments in high school. For all you have done for us we offer our thanks, our love and our hopes for the future. As you look at these pages you can share with us the events of the year knowing that we are the product of your concerns, guidance, and love. Words can't adeguately express the intention of this dedication; but the simple thought......says it all. 3 Table of Contents Title Page 1 Yearbook Staff 2 Dedication 3 Seniors 5 Juniors 17 Sophomores 21 Freshmen 27 Activities 32 Sports 35 Organizations 69 Faculty 75 Advertisements 80 JEFF ATKINSON We have found a way to make it through We have the strength in the things we do We have finished a task, a job, a plan We have been in school and done all we can We are wiser, older, and set to be All that we can — this class of '83 SENIORS CASEY CARTER SENIORS LORA DICKSON G ROGER COX TOM FURLONG HAUNA DRAPER 7 SENIORS 3D HOLDEREGGER WENDELL HINTZ VICKI KER5H KEITH MAHAN I I SYLVIA LATHAM JIM McCORMICK BRIEN NELSEN VERLYN MICHEL DEBBIE MURPHY SENIORS SENIORS DAVID SPRIGG KIM STEVENS SANDY STOUT Batman and Robin? A glance back................ The 1982 season began with 17 players and a lot of uncertainty. The year ended with 13 players and a lot of satisfaction. Going in to the final game of the season Westwood still had a shot at the league title and a playoff berth. A tough 6-0 loss to the eventual section champions put the whole season in perspective. The success was due to a total team effort and the traditions of Westwood. Head Coach Fred Binswanger and his assistant Phil Bryant, were named Co-Coaches of the year for their direction of the 1982 'Jacks. Senior Roger Cox ended his football career as the Offensive Player of The Year. 36 Varsity on the move 1982 FOOTBALL ww 7 - 12 ww 10 - 0 ww 6 - 38 ww 0 - 28 ww 17 - 13 ww 0 - 20 ww 50 - 0 ww 14 - 0 ww 0 - 6 BIG VALLEY MERCY MODOC FALL RIVER LOYALTON PORTOLA HERLONG GREENVILLE CHESTER Varsity Defense versus Loyalton. Fundamentals, repetition and learning_the three key words for a JV football player. Coaches Bob Clark and Mark Ritchie led the young 'Jacks for the 1982 season. Their emphasis was on gaining the necessary ex- perience to be contributing varsity player in the next few years. Brian Rainey led the 'Jacks from his guarter- back position where he threw to tight end Joe Hasselwander and handed off to Mike Pettengill, the leading rusher. Coach Clark stated, The measure of our success is not in wins and losses but rather in the growth and development of our athletes. Although not having a winning season, the J.V.'s gained valuable experience. They have a lot to look forward to as most of the team members were freshmen and will return next year. The season began with Mr. Sinclair as the coach, he took over until Miss Sugaya was able to return from a leave of absence. Leading scorer for the young Jill's was freshman Lorrie Nelsen. Serena Richards and Susan Wilson were also key factors in the season with their rebounding and ball handling. It was a successful season from the stand- poing of improvements in skills, attitudes and self-discipline. But the track team was there and working hard as we passed our final deadline. Mr. Will Wright directed the Track program again in 1983. He is looking for good performance from Tim Hetherington, Vicki Kersh, Wade Jones, Serena Richard and Mike Pettengill. WRESTLING Shawn Russell was the key man agair in 1982. He was E.R.L. Champion, Sectic Champion and placed 5th in Sub-Section. An outstanding accomplishment for both Shawn and the Westwood grapplers. First year head coach Joe Garcia provide leadership and the strong fundamentals necessary to build a program with. He will return along with all his current wrestlers for the 1983 season. Roger Cox is the key man in the JACK'S title hopes. If he again repeats his performance as League M.V.P. the JACKS should again be tough. Joining Roger as key re- turnee's are Jeff Atkinson, Chris Sinclair, Brian Rainey and Don Benner. Newcomers Clayton Henderson, Joe Hasselwander and Tom Furlong are battling for starting spots. Westwood's Band, under the direction of Mr. Lou Hamilton, has steadily improved its performances and positive impact on our community. Lou's dedication and his organization spirit are evident at all games and community spon- sored activities that they participate in. The Marching Band, The Jazz Band, The Concert Band and The Pep Band have all grown since Lou arrived four years ago. A Band Booster Club was founded in this 82- 83 school year as a community support group, providing fund raising and further assistance to the program.
